LAS VEGAS (AP) — Coach Kyle Shanahan's third trip to the Super Bowl ended up just like his first two — major disappointment after another blown late lead. The San Francisco 49ers coach has developed an offense that teams around the league try to mimic and has a vast coaching tree that makes him one of the most influential figures in the game at the young age of 44. He just doesn't have a Super Bowl title after San Francisco squandered two late leads and lost 25-22 in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Sunday. That follows a blown 10-point lead by Shanahan's 49ers in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl four years ago to Kansas City and an even bigger collapse in the 2016 season when he was offensive coordinator. Mahomes and the Chiefs have now handed Shanahan's 49ers two Super Bowl losses in the past five seasons as the dynastic franchise from the 1980s and '90s has now gone 29 straight seasons without winning a title.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The aggressiveness that characterized the turnaround for the Detroit Lions under coach Dan Campbell backfired at the worst possible time. Detroit failed on two fourth-down tries in field-goal range in the second half, contributing to a blown 17-point halftime lead and a 34-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game Sunday. The result was just the fourth conference game loss for a team that held a lead of at least 17 points. A magical season for the Lions ended one game short of the franchise’s first Super Bowl appearance. Detroit remains the only team to play every season of the Super Bowl era without reaching the ultimate game.

(AP) — Brock Purdy threw for 267 yards and a touchdown, and the San Francisco 49ers rallied from 17 points down at halftime to beat the Detroit Lions 34-31 on Sunday and reach the Super Bowl. He engineered a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter to beat Green Bay last week and then had an even bigger comeback against the Lions. Detroit remains the only team to play every season of the Super Bowl era without reaching the ultimate game. Purdy then drove the Niners to a 33-yard field goal by Jake Moody and their first lead of the game. Campbell bypassed a chance at a game-tying field goal on fourth-and-3 from the Niners 30 midway through the fourth quarter.
