The future for Apple's Vision Pro looks promising despite Wall Street's muted enthusiasm. Wall Street doesn't expect the Vision Pro to drive a ton of revenue at first though. Bank of America estimates the Vision Pro could add 46 cents per share to earnings-per-share (EPS) within the next five years. "We tested the Vision Pro and walked away positively from the overall extremely unique and immersive experience," BofA analysts wrote in a Monday research note. While it'll take time, the Vision Pro has the potential to boost sales and earnings in the future.

A trader works, as a screen displays a news conference by Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell following the Fed rate announcement, on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on Dec. 13, 2023. That is, the Fed is pivoting toward cutting interest rates — not in March but sometime later in the year — and the central bank is expecting to reduce short-term interest rates three times in 2024. I never believed that the Fed would cut interest rates in March nor cut them as many as six times this year. While it's often said that interest rates go up an escalator and come down in an elevator, I believe this cycle will show itself to work in reverse. That, of course, could change should the economy slow significantly, or should the unemployment rate rise rapidly.

It's ironic: We are at a moment where supply of money and demand for goods are intersecting. We have two markets: the Treasury market and the equity market, with the first more powerful than the second, even if we can't tell that in the scrum of earnings announcements. If the Fed signals more rate cuts, then we will be set up for higher stock prices if the companies deliver good earnings. The possibility of higher earnings so far has been controlled by supply and demand and the disinflation it is breeding, which may continue this week. Hence the power of their earnings to generate the mask of a higher market price-to-earnings ratio.

Brendan Mcdermid | ReutersThe stock market keeps scaling new heights as investors focus on the good and ignore the bad, no matter how bad the bad parts might look sometimes. Prospects for a slowing economy, geopolitical unrest and turmoil in Washington aren't scaring market participants largely because none of those threats have turned into much in reality. As it has digested the various headwinds and tail winds, the market is pushing toward a record closing high. Along with commentary from multiple Fed officials, the tight labor market has taken some of the steam of out the market's anticipation for rate cuts this year. Where the market a week ago was nearly certain the Fed would start cutting in March and keep going with six more quarter percentage point moves this year, pricing shifted Friday.

Coming off a wonderfully surprising stock market global boom of 2023, this year could be anybody's guess. Utility-scale solar projects are growing around the world, and Wall Street firm T.D. There is too much money chasing solar projects, someone has to win. Here's the thinking for 2024: global oil demand is going to grow, but given China's rolling economic pain it may increase by less than some expect. Russia remains robust on global markets despite sanctions, and OPEC may have done most of what it can to keep its member and allies production levels lower to balance out global markets.

Last year, banks opened 2023 by forecasting layoffs, including for the investment bankers who suddenly had nothing to do following the pandemic-era M&A and IPO boom. Citigroup kicked off 2024 ominously, warning that it will lay off as many as 20,000 employees by 2026. The bank expects 2024 expenses to increase further to total $90 billion, up $2.8 billion from 2023, and much of that will be focused on hiring. CFO Barnum on Friday said the bank is gearing up for a "rebound in the investment banking wallet."
