Clark ended Thursday with 3,569 career points and could set the all-time scoring record in men’s and women’s NCAA basketball history before the season’s end. The late Pete Maravich, who played at Louisiana State for three seasons from 1967 to 1970, holds that record – 3,667 points. Her 49 points Thursday also was a one-game best for her in college, and a one-game best for any University of Iowa women’s basketball player. Before Thursday’s game, at Iowa’s weekly news conference, Clark was asked if she ever thought she could be in a position to surpass the career scoring record. I think that’s been one of the coolest parts.”This season, Clark and Iowa are looking to end the season on a high by claiming a first ever women’s basketball national championship.

Electric heat pumps are also more efficient at heating and cooling homes than systems powered by oil and propane. Heat pumps move hot and cold air from indoors to outdoors, rather than burn fuel, and can save the average US homeowner an estimated $500 a year. TOKYO (AP) — A pod of killer whales that was trapped in drift ice off Japan's northern main island of Hokkaido, prompting concern from environmental groups, has apparently safely escaped, officials said Wednesday. After analyzing drone footage filmed by a conservationist group, officials counted 13 killer whales there. Photos You Should See View All 45 ImagesOfficials said they believe the killer whales were able to free themselves from the drift ice as gaps between them grew. Although the trapped whales were in Japanese waters, they were not far from an island that is disputed by Japan and Russia. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters on Wednesday that killer whales are not designated as an endangered species in Japan and that officials were monitoring the situation while Japan and Russia communicated over the issue.

Pictured in a publicity shot for the original production of “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker,” in the role known as Tea, was a young Asian dancer identified as George Li. For Lin, a veteran newspaper reporter turned documentarian, the picture raised intriguing questions. In 1954, when the photo was taken, it was rare to see dancers of color on the stage of New York City Ballet, the company Balanchine co-founded. But new data suggests Prime membership growth may have bounced back in the US, after seeing a dip for the first time ever in 2022. The increase follows Prime's first-ever drop in membership growth in 2022, when CIRP said its survey data showed Prime "essentially stopped growing" in the US. "An increase in Prime members today means that more US consumers are finding Prime and therefore Amazon shopping is worth the investment in membership." Earlier this week, Amazon started showing ads on its Prime video streaming service for the first time.

A few weeks ago, when I asked Times readers under 30 how politics influences their dating lives, I expected that the subject of reproductive choice would come up pretty frequently. Among the more than 200 people who sent email responses to my questionnaire, I got a lot of answers like this one from a 25-year-old New Yorker named Nicole, who described herself as very liberal: “Anti-abortion is my biggest political deal-breaker. I also talked to Nathan Miller, 23, of Dayton, Ohio, who described himself as very conservative. He told me that abortion is a deeply personal issue for him, because he’s Catholic. If they were using dating apps, they said, they would often filter for political beliefs so people from the opposing party wouldn’t even show up in their feeds.

An archeologist found a silk dress from the 1800s with a hidden pocket concealing a secret code. "It was a beautiful sort of rust, metallic, bronze silk dress," she told Business Insider, one she'd seen at the shop for years. While it's tempting to think Bennet was the owner of the paper, it's not necessarily the case, Rivers Cofield said. Japanese baseball player Shohei Ohtani attends a press conference on his presentation after signing a 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on Dec. 14, 2023. At first glance, Shohei Ohtani's $700 million, 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers is nothing short of a Ruthian blockbuster, topping all other free agent pacts. The deal was originally reported as a $700 million, 10-year deal, which drastically tops all previous MLB contracts in terms of total compensation and average annual value. And on the other side of the spectrum, annual inflation was consistently less than 2% for much of the 2010s. For him, the decision to sign the deal with the Dodgers had more to do with earning things on the field than off.

Fain’s sermonette underscores a trend that has largely gone unnoticed: The Social Gospel movement is making a comeback. Jemal Countess/Getty ImagesIt might sound like hyperbole to say that this resurgent form of the Social Gospel is changing our politics. He reached deep into the Social Gospel throughout the UAW strike, routinely deploying what one commentator called “strikingly Christian rhetoric.”Christopher H. Evans, author of “The Social Gospel in American Religion: A History,” said he heard the Social Gospel in Fain’s UAW speeches. “It (The Social Gospel) won’t have the institutional muscle it had before, but you could still have these voices and followers.”The climate in contemporary America seems ripe for the Social Gospel message. That one time was in 2011, when the two parties ended up tied in the state Senate, with the Republican lieutenant governor serving as the tie-breaker. Democrats hold the thinnest of majorities in the state Senate, while Republicans narrowly control the state House. In 1950, Alan Turing, the gifted British mathematician and code-breaker, published a paper in the field of artificial intelligence. His aim, he wrote, was to consider the question, “Can machines think?”The answer runs to almost 12,000 words. But it ends succinctly: “We can only see a short distance ahead,” Mr. Turing wrote, “but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.”More than seven decades on, that sentiment sums up the mood of many policymakers, researchers and tech leaders arriving on Wednesday at Britain’s A.I. Safety Summit, which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hopes will position the country as a leader in the global race to harness and regulate artificial intelligence. Governments have been working to address the risks posed by the fast-evolving technology since last year’s release of ChatGPT, a humanlike chatbot that demonstrated how the latest models are advancing in unpredictable ways.
