AdvertisementFor decades, the city's restrictive zoning and land-use policies have made missing-middle housing almost impossible to build. But there aren't many options, particularly for homeownership, between mostly high-end apartments and prohibitively expensive single-family homes. But he's concerned the law won't do enough to shorten the permitting process for missing-middle housing construction. The HOME Act will encourage the construction of smaller single-family homes and promote density, making housing — particularly homeownership — more affordable. Turner just wants the city to "level the playing field" for developers who are willing to build missing-middle housing.

Despite enticing alternatives, a fixed-rate mortgage remains the best option for us. With mortgage interest rates still close to 7%, alternative mortgages like adjustable-rate loans and mortgages with shorter maturities are gaining in popularity. AdvertisementThe beauty of the fixed-rate mortgage is that it offers certainty in an uncertain world. Any gain somebody might get with a lower interest rate might be offset by paying more for the house. So, we will be sticking with a fixed-rate mortgage and shopping around for the best rate.

Egg prices are on the rise again. Here's why

Brandon Bell | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesEgg prices are on the rise again, after having fallen from record highs in 2023. Average egg prices jumped 8.9% from November to December, following a 2.2% rise the prior month, according to the consumer price index. December's egg price move was the largest relative to other items in the CPI basket, which measures prices of everything from concert tickets to furniture, electricity and prescription drugs. There are more than 368 million egg-laying chickens in the U.S., the USDA said. At the time, a farm group alleged that price gouging and profiteering among major egg suppliers also drove high prices in 2022, though some economists were skeptical that factor was at play.

Consumers saw inflation cool in October after gasoline prices fell and underlying price pressures eased. The report suggests the Fed is likely done raising interest rates. Photo: Brandon Bell/Getty ImagesAmericans slowed their spending in October and inflation continued cooling as the economy downshifted from a fast-paced third quarter. Consumer spending rose 0.2% in October, down sharply from a 0.7% rise in September, the Commerce Department said Thursday. The combination of ebbing income growth, high interest rates and prices, dwindling pandemic savings and the resumption of student loan payments are eroding Americans’ ability to keep boosting their spending as briskly as they did through the summer, economists say.

For an example of how climate change is increasingly becoming a flashpoint in the culture wars, Germany is a good place to start. Meanwhile, Spain’s far-right Vox party vowed to defend the country against “the new climate religion.”But to understand why climate change and the culture wars have become so enmeshed globally, experts say the United States probably holds the key. It’s effective, it does scare people.”The origins of the climate culture war in the US lie in the early 1990s, when a new push for global climate action collided with big geopolitical change, McCright said. Fox has “been laying the groundwork necessary for positioning climate policies as a culture war issue for a long time,” she said.

Photo: Brandon Bell/Getty ImagesAmericans paid less for gasoline last month, helping keep inflation in check, but underlying price pressures remained steady in October, analysts estimate. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal estimate consumer prices rose 0.1% in October from the prior month and 3.3% from a year earlier. Those economists also think so-called core prices, which exclude volatile food and energy items, rose 0.3% in October from the prior month and 4.1% from a year earlier. At some point, an inflation reading could make the Fed more comfortable with the progress it has made to slow price increases. The Labor Department will release the October consumer-price index report at 8.30 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday.

Retail beef prices in the U.S. are at record highs, pushing up prices of beef-based products from burgers to steaks and steak tartare. Retail beef prices are currently hovering around record levels of about $8 per pound, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). "All consumers will be paying more for all beef products for several more years," Wells Fargo's Chief Agricultural Economist Michael Swanson told CNBC via email. "As cattlemen retain cows to rebuild the herd, there is a much lower supply of cattle to provide beef," Swanson said.
