But on the tail of a record-breaking heatwave that swept the Midwest and Northeast, she’s finding it difficult to keep costs down. Americans’ power bills are expected to soar this summer, as heat waves have already begun baking parts of the country. But keeping your AC off when you’re not home may actually result in higher bills later on. A higher rating indicates lower energy consumption levels and, in turn, lower costs of cooling.

Last year was “another year of highs in our energy hungry world,” said Juliet Davenport, president of the Energy Institute. Overall, the proportion of fossil fuels in the 2023 global energy mix remained largely the same at 81.5%, down just 0.5% from the previous year. India’s fossil fuel consumption was up 8% last year and, for the first time ever, the country used more coal than Europe and North America, combined. Dhiraj Singh/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesIn China, fossil fuel use soared to a new record high in 2023, up by 6%, as the end of its extended Covid lockdowns led to a rebound in fossil fuels. Fossil fuel use in major advanced economies is likely to have peaked and is beginning to fall, it found.

Kennedy Jr. failed to qualify for the first presidential debate hosted by CNN next week, officially setting up a one-on-one clash between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Last month, Kennedy's campaign filed a Federal Election Commission complaint against CNN and the Biden and Trump campaigns, alleging the way they set up the June 27 presidential debate was illegal. Kennedy still has a chance to qualify for the Sept. 10 debate, hosted by ABC News. That debate has the same ballot access and polling criteria as CNN's, although it's unclear when the polling window will open.

A federal judge temporarily barred notorious "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli from streaming or disseminating copies of a one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album he had forfeited as part of his criminal fraud conviction in 2017. Steven Cooper, a lawyer for PleasrDAO, said Wednesday that he could not comment on whether he has been in touch with prosecutors on Shkreli's alleged violation of his forfeiture order. Shkreli bought the Wu-Tang Clan album in 2015 for $2 million, setting a Guinness world record for the most expensive musical work ever sold. The 31-track, two-disc Wu-Tang Clan album, came in a hand-carved, nickel-and-silver-cased box set, which itself was nestled in a larger leather box. The FDA reverses its ban on Juul e-cigarettes

The Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that it has reversed its ban on Juul e-cigarettes while it reviews new court decisions and considers updated information provided by the vape-maker. The FDA first stopped the company from marketing its products in 2022, but they have stayed on shelves pending an appeal. Even as Juul has pursued its appeal of the 2022 marketing ban, that initial FDA ruling significantly disrupted the company's finances, prompting a bailout from two of its largest investors, The Wall Street Journal has reported. Juul also continues to face lawsuits from consumers saying its products harmed their health. To date, the FDA has given only 23 e-cigarette products, made by just three companies, official approval to be marketed to consumers.

A source familiar with the Governor’s plan said Hochul pushed for the delay due to concerns about affordability and the potential impact to the city’s post-pandemic economic recovery. New York’s congestion pricing would have been the first of its kind in the United States. “As a longtime champion of Congestion Pricing and the Congressional Representative of a significant portion of the Central Business District (CBD), I am disappointed by reports that Governor Hochul will not implement Congestion Pricing on June 30, as previously planned,” Nadler said in a statement. “For years, Leader Hakeem Jeffries has maintained neutrality with respect to the congestion pricing policy debate. Congestion pricing is a $15 billion lifeline for the MTA – critical funding that will be lost if the program is stalled,” the group said in a statement.

All three infants were found alive and were quickly cared for, with the oldest two since being adopted, according to PA Media. Like her sister Roman, she was left in very cold January temperatures. The Metropolitan Police said at the time it was “highly likely” that Elsa was born after a “concealed pregnancy,” according to PA Media.

Earlier this year, I wrote about a friend who was attacked and thrown to the ground on a September afternoon, while she was walking toward Borough Hall in Brooklyn to go to the post office. She was on the phone with her mother when a man, whose erratic behavior she had noticed in the distance, pushed her into the street, leaving her with bruises, a chipped tooth and fear new to her after decades of living in New York. At the time, it did not seem as though the assault might be part of a dark emerging trend. But the incident would presage many others — instances in which women in New York were randomly punched on the street in the middle of the day. A few days before the announcement, a 9-year-old girl standing with her mother was punched in the face by a man at Grand Central Station.

Four years ago, Exxon Mobil's reign as the longest-serving component in the Dow Jones Industrial Average abruptly ended when the oil major was replaced by Salesforce in August 2020 in the biggest shake-up in years. That reshuffling of the Dow was seen as a sign of the times, with the energy sector struggling from a total collapse in oil prices into negative territory during the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, technology stocks booked strong gains during the work-from-home era. The oil major's stock has gained nearly 170% since the August 24, 2020, announcement of its exit from the Dow, while Salesforce has gained just 4% over the same period.

The Biden campaign echoed that statement on social media with a link to the Democratic incumbent's donation page.
