Such recruitment-based adoptions are the most difficult to carry out, social workers say. Gonzaga, who worked with his wife Heather Setrakian at eharmony and then on the Family-Match algorithm, referred questions to Ramirez. Social workers say Family-Match works like this: Adults seeking to adopt submit survey responses via the algorithm’s online platform, and foster parents or social workers input each child’s information. Adoption-Share is part of a small cadre of organizations that say their algorithms can help social workers place children with foster or adoptive families. “It’s wasted time for social workers and wasted emotional experiences for children.”___Contact AP’s global investigative team at Investigative@ap.org or https://www.ap.org/tips/

We are actually going to be looking at this in the very early days of generative AI. casey newtonYeah, this feels like one of the big questions in AI right now. rebecca tushnetSo I see why you say that’s strange, but in fact, it’s exactly how you would make a general-purpose tool. But now, finally, along come these new technologies to take them down a peg, and they’re actually going to have to work for a living. So maybe they’re slapping, like, AI sort of things around the stories that they’re aggregating.

President Biden just signed an executive order regarding the development and use of AI technology. The broad executive order touches on more than a dozen possible uses of AI and generative AI that already are, or could in the future, directly impact people's lives. The size threshold is so high that currently most available models do not meet the criteria for further transparency called for in Biden's executive order. Although all of the major tech companies earlier this year agreed to adhere to standards of responsibility and training in their AI work. Do you think AI is in a hype cycle, and everybody's overreacting to what it's going to mean?

The message is one more indication of the political and security challenges the U.S.-Mexico border has presented for President Joe Biden. The Biden administration this week took two actions seen by many as moving to the right on immigration. The White House counters that migration has surged across the Western Hemisphere due to regional challenges out of the administration's control. So they are on the streets.”Despite his 2020 promises on the border, Biden has long been more moderate on the issue than some in his party. It hasn’t worked for them before and it won’t work for them this cycle either,” said Pili Tobar, a former senior Biden White House official and Democratic strategist.

For now, the White House plans to seize upon the dysfunction for as long as it lasts. The two declared candidates for the speakership, Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Steve Scalise of Louisiana, each have their own history with the Biden White House. “Breaking 234 years of precedent, the incumbent administration has charged President Trump for acts that lie not just within the ‘outer perimeter,’ but at the heart of his official responsibilities as President,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in the court filing. Earlier this week, Trump’s lawyers reportedly motioned to dismiss charges related to hush money payments in a New York case, where they argued that the indictment was intended to interfere with the presidential election. His lawyers also requested this week that his federal trial in Florida relating to the mishandling of classified documents be delayed until after the presidential election. The most memorable and oft-quoted line of her opinion suggested she might take a dim view of Trump’s sweeping immunity claim. The case seems likely to end up before the Supreme Court, which has a mixed track record on the issue.

Lawmakers return to Washington on Tuesday with just a handful of days to avert a government shutdown and a treacherous path forward to keep the government funded as landmines crop up on all sides. It’s an extremely precarious situation, with the consequence of a shutdown looming if lawmakers can’t fund the government by midnight Saturday. House leadership is aiming to move forward on the four full-year spending bills, which are chock-full of conservative policies and face no prospects in the Senate. Even so, whether that fail safe would come in time to avert a shutdown remains to be seen. The White House has asked Congress for roughly $40 billion in funding for Ukraine, domestic disaster relief and border security.

Biden, Netanyahu to discuss Saudi normalization, Iran

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden sits with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) before a dinner at the Prime Minister's residence in Jerusalem March 9, 2010. Netanyahu did not get a meeting in the early months of the Biden White House in 2021 and was then ousted from power. "The Saudi deal's enormous potential has left Biden & Netanyahu little choice but to meet despite differences," he said. There is still work to do," White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Sept. 7. U.S. officials have not ruled out an eventual White House meeting between Biden and Netanyahu.

Donald Trump said Melania "doesn't care" about not being on Vogue during his White House tenure. Last year, Melania said she had "much more important things to do" than appear on a Vogue cover. The former president also questioned the lack of a Vogue cover for Melania Trump, a former model, when she was in Washington, DC. "She's been on the cover of the magazines for a long time, and she was on the cover of Vogue before. In May 2022, Melania Trump accused the magazine of bias after first lady Jill Biden appeared on the August 2021 cover, just months after moving into the White House.

WASHINGTON (AP) — As the Biden administration heralds the forthcoming release of five U.S. citizens detained by Iran, President Joe Biden is also confronting questions about the price being paid to bring them — and other detainees — home. But each time, officials have said bringing home Americans held by foreign adversaries is a core administration priority that necessarily comes at a heavy cost. Increasingly, the Biden White House has appeared willing to pay it. The Biden administration is, of course, hardly unique in prisoner swaps. The Obama administration in a 2016 deal that drew consternation granted clemency to seven Iranians charged in the U.S. in exchange for the release by Iran of four Americans.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Elizabeth Warren is sounding alarm bells about the future of regional banks in a new letter Thursday to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and a top advisory group for bank regulators. In the letter to Yellen, obtained exclusively by CNBC, Warren addresses the secretary in her capacity as chair of the Financial Stability Oversight Council, and asks her and the council to investigate several looming threats to banks. "I urge you to take strong action to address the alarming fallout from high interest rates and protect the safety of our financial system," Warren writes. The request follows an August announcement by Moody's that it was downgrading 10 regional banks, and putting another 17 banks either under review or changing their outlooks from stable to negative. The Massachusetts senator has been an outspoken critic of the increases, warning Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell and others that higher interest rates will ultimately hurt working Americans, even if they appear to exert downward pressure on inflation.

The impeachment inquiry comes at a fragile political moment for the president. An impeachment inquiry would give Republicans broad new powers to request documents and testimony about the Bidens. For now, the White House views the situation from a communications standpoint rather than as a legal issue. “Kevin McCarthy, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and MAGA Republicans just launched a beyond ridiculous impeachment inquiry into President Biden,” the fundraising email reads. An element of the White House strategy is keeping him focused on his governing duties, including plans to deliver what the White House has billed as a “major economic address” in Maryland on Thursday.

With a five-vote margin in the House — and 18 House GOP members representing districts President Joe Biden won — the math just doesn’t work. The impeachment of President Andrew Johnson during Reconstruction and the impeachment inquiry into President Richard Nixon for Watergate were separated by more than a century. The impeachment of President Bill Clinton and the double impeachment of President Donald Trump were separated by a little more than 20 years. The only silver lining in this dark cloud over the Biden White House comes from independents’ take on the alternative. As our colleague Harry Enten points out, just 33% of independents think Biden did something illegal, according to a recent Fox News poll.

There are no binding rules about what the House must do to begin an impeachment inquiry, and history offers no clear guide. In 1998, the House voted to open an impeachment inquiry into President Bill Clinton. In 2021, the House impeached Mr. Trump a second time with no inquiry at all. A 2020 Justice Department memo written during the Trump administration argued that an impeachment inquiry was invalid without a vote of the House. “Speaker McCarthy’s announcement of an impeachment inquiry by relevant committees raises interesting questions about authority to issue and enforce subpoenas in pursuance of the inquiry,” said Stanley Brand, the former House general counsel.

CNN —The White House plans to send a letter to top US news executives on Wednesday, urging them to intensify their scrutiny of House Republicans after Speaker Kevin McCarthy launched an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, despite having found no evidence of a crime. “It’s time for the media to ramp up its scrutiny of House Republicans for opening an impeachment inquiry based on lies,” Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House Counsel’s Office, wrote in the letter, according to a draft copy obtained by CNN. The correspondence comes one day after McCarthy announced that he had directed three House committees to begin an impeachment inquiry into Biden. In its letter Wednesday, the White House will ask news organizations to be more clear-eyed in their coverage of the impeachment inquiry, and not to fall prey to the traps of false equivalency in reporting. The Republican House-led investigations into Biden have yet to provide any direct evidence that the president financially benefited from Hunter Biden’s career overseas.

Half a century ago, the Supreme Court ruled in the United States v. Nixon that executive privilege is not absolute. In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court in 1974 rejected Nixon’s argument – a ruling that marked the end of his presidency. But would the Supreme Court half a century later say the same? “It wouldn't shock me to find that the Supreme Court tries to avoid a showdown,” Geyh says. “One could see certain issues developing through the course of litigation that do present the type of constitutional question that the Supreme Court would take,” Geyh says.

CNN —President Joe Biden traveled to Florida on Saturday to survey the devastation from Hurricane Idalia. But a White House official told CNN the governor hadn’t raised that issue when the president told him of his visit before announcing it publicly. Of course, those concerns were apparently not an issue when DeSantis welcomed Biden to the state to survey past calamities. For example, in 2021, after the deadly condo collapse in Surfside, Florida, Biden and DeSantis came together as the president toured the damage. CNN —Millions of Americans are immersed in a twisted world where language used to describe autocrats is being applied to America’s democratic institutions. The draconian rhetoric, once reserved for the likes of tyrants and dictators, has become commonplace in right-wing media when referring to President Joe Biden and the elected government he leads. It’s all part of a larger trend that has dramatically disfigured the conservative media since Trump ascended to power. Arguably, the rhetoric saturating mainstream right-wing media today is more extreme than the hyperbole used in the weeks leading up to the insurrection at the US Capitol. In those weeks, just like now, right-wing media forces set the stage and gathered the tinder for Trump — who was happy to light a match to the gasoline-soaked kindling gathered before him on January 6.

Jordan, who sits atop the powerful House Judiciary Committee, has embarked on a fishing expedition at Facebook, demanding Zuckerberg turn over reams of internal documents that pertain to Meta’s content moderation decisions. In effect, Jordan is coercing Zuckerberg into turning over documents that will then be used to mendaciously smear the Meta chief’s company. Meta, for its part, had previously said it had already turned over thousands of pages of documents and was cooperating with the committee. Most news organizations gave Jordan’s “Facebook Files” entry little attention on Thursday. In this case, the awesome powers of the federal government are being weaponized to threaten Zuckerberg into handing the information over.
