Democratic Party grandees, meanwhile, crowded onto Sunday talk shows to try to turn attention away from Biden’s confused and painful debate showing and to put the spotlight back on Trump. But any set of bad polls showing an already-tough reelection bid was seriously damaged by the debate could trigger panic again. The ferocious counterattack by Biden’s campaign, however, is not answering fundamental questions posed in the aftermath of a debate that shattered confidence in Biden’s capacity to beat Trump for many of his fellow Democrats. Voters saw Biden’s reduced and poignant state with their own eyes. Biden campaign manager Jennifer O’Malley Dillon even blamed any poor forthcoming polls on the media and not the president.

The first debate is over, and President Biden’s faltering performance prompted much hand-wringing among Democrats. How likely is it that former President Donald J. Trump will win the November election? Fundamentally, the markets don’t care who wins. Stocks rose early Friday after a favorable inflation report only to give up a little ground later, while the odds of another Democrat replacing Mr. Biden jumped on PredictIt, an election prediction market. Momentous as this election may be, stocks did well under President Trump and they are doing well under President Biden — not necessarily because of any of their policies.

Asked whether Biden would exit the race, Biden campaign spokesperson Seth Schuster responded: “No.”“There’s no basis for that,” one Biden adviser also told CNN Friday morning. CNN —President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, are set to make history on CNN Thursday night as they meet for their first 2024 debate. Thursday’s debate will be the earliest in the election cycle that a presidential debate featuring the major parties’ nominees has taken place in modern history. That’s why Trump’s advisers and allies have urged the former president to focus on issues like the economy, crime and inflation as he debates Biden. The Biden campaign knows all this, of course, so it will be interesting – and instructive – to hear his message and analyze where it’s being targeted. The Trump campaign distanced itself, in part, from the plan, noting that the advisers who wrote it are not on the payroll.

Hunter Biden’s guilty verdict on three federal gun charges Tuesday punctuated — but did not end — what has been a long and difficult saga. Instead, the president offered his family a warm smile, hugged Hunter Biden’s young son, Beau, and gave him a kiss on the forehead. Never before has a president’s immediate family member been found guilty of a crime during their father’s term in office. Instead of pushing him away, as some wary Democrats might prefer, the president has held Hunter Biden close throughout his ordeal. Farther out of town is the home on a lake the Biden family has returned to in moments of joy and times of pain.

When The New York Post first reported in 2020 about a laptop once used by Hunter Biden — which the paper said contained incriminating evidence against him and his father, Joseph R. Biden Jr., who was running for president — it set off a firestorm. Many national news outlets raised questions about the existence of the laptop and the claims about its contents, while major social media platforms limited posts about The Post’s coverage. Many of the claims made by The Post in its coverage of the laptop, in which the publication sought to link President Biden to corrupt business dealings, have not been proved. But the laptop had enough incriminating evidence to continue to haunt Hunter Biden. A prosecutor briefly held up the laptop before the jury in Delaware, and an F.B.I.

Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, and his wife Melissa Cohen Biden arrive at the federal court for his trial on criminal gun charges, in Wilmington, Delaware, U.S., June 10, 2024. The criminal gun trial of Hunter Biden resumed Monday morning with his lawyers revealing that the son of President Joe Biden will not testify in Wilmington, Delaware, federal court. Biden is charged with three crimes related to possessing a handgun while being a drug user. Biden's lawyer Abbe Lowell effectively said he would not take the witness stand during a morning hearing with Judge Maryellen Noreika on proposed jury instructions. Lowell told Noreika to leave the phrase "did not testify" — referring to Biden — in those instructions.

President Biden on Sunday wrapped up a five-day visit to France by making a point to visit a cemetery for American soldiers killed in World War I. For Mr. Biden — running against Mr. Trump again — visiting the cemetery was meant to send a message to voters back home. “America showed up.”Mr. Biden was talking about the United States military during World War I. But he might as well have been talking about Mr. Trump’s refusal to show up six years ago. Asked directly what he was trying to say about his rival in this year’s presidential race, Mr. Biden paused for a moment.

Hallie Biden, a former girlfriend of Hunter Biden and widow of his brother, Beau, took the stand on Thursday, telling jurors that she saw him buy, stash and smoke vast amounts of crack cocaine in the fall of 2018 when he claimed to be drug-free on a firearms application. Ms. Biden — speaking in nervous, clipped bursts as she faced Mr. Biden across the fourth-floor courtroom — admitted that he had introduced her to crack. She said she was ashamed and embarrassed by their behavior when the two briefly lived together in a rented house in Annapolis, Md., a time when both were in shock over Beau Biden’s death. Ms. Biden is, by far, the most important witness for the prosecution, offering the most detailed, and intimate, portrait of Mr. Biden’s reckless and self-destructive behavior at the time. Mr. Biden, she said, bought multiple rocks of crack in Washington, where he kept an apartment — some the size of “Ping-Pong balls, or bigger maybe” — and stored them in his “backpack or car.”

AdvertisementBiden during the meeting also closed his eyes for such a duration that some wondered if he had shut out the meeting, per the report. When pressed on the issue, Biden has vigorously defended his age and his administration's accomplishments. And Democratic allies like Jeffries have also strongly vouched for Biden, telling the Journal that the president was "incredibly strong, forceful and decisive" in the January White House meeting. The White House strongly pushed back against the characterization of Biden as a poor performer, which spokesman Andrew Bates in a statement to the Journal said were "false and politically motivated claims."

CNN —It’s the recurring threat President Joe Biden’s reelection bid will never be able to fully outrun. Democrats accused Republicans quoted or referred to in the account of making false claims and contradicting previous statements to damage Biden politically. But all it takes is one halting on-camera moment or media report to revive the frenzy over Biden’s age. Biden’s team habitually dismisses any concern over his capacity, and his doctors have certified him fit for duty. But they are concerned about Biden’s age.

And among those watching most closely are world leaders near and far. Of course, world leaders have generally stayed mum on the issue of which man they prefer – although I would wager that most favor the status quo over a return to the raucous years of Trump’s presidency. Some world leaders have already signaled their aversion to another Trump presidency. But for these foreign leaders, coming out against Trump is a move that is chock full of risks. The stakes in this election are too high for global leaders to stay mum.

The meeting is part of the Republicans' impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The co-chairman of a super PAC supporting Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s presidential campaign announced plans Tuesday to publish a tell-all memoir this summer by an Arkansas woman who had a child with Hunter Biden, the youngest son of President Joe Biden. "Out of the Shadows: My Life Inside the Wild World of Hunter Biden" is written by Lunden Roberts, who gave birth to Hunter Biden's daughter in 2018. Roberts' memoir will be published by Skyhorse Publishing, a company whose president, Tony Lyons, is a co-founder of the pro-Kennedy super PAC American Values 2024. Lyons said a press release that Roberts' memoir contains "revelations that could well impact the outcome of the 2024 election."

CNN —After months of either ignoring or poking fun at former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial, the Biden campaign on Tuesday decided for the first time to stage a news conference about Trump’s record outside the courthouse where closing arguments were taking place. In their view, Trump’s trial would speak for itself, reintroducing the former president and the chaos that surrounds him to voters who may have tuned him out. “The entire news media is camped out here, day in and day out,” campaign communications director Michael Tyler said, explaining the choice to address reporters outside the lower Manhattan courthouse. Biden campaign officials are still grappling with the reality, this person said, that a substantial part of the population still doesn’t see that the choice on Election Day will be between Biden and Trump. “We knew Trump was out of control when he was president,” De Niro says over a shot of Trump behind the Resolute Desk.

Washington, you often hear, is a place so polarized that our leaders barely get anything done. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a progressive leader, has worked on legislation with several conservative Senate Republicans, including Josh Hawley and J.D. My editors recently asked me to make sense of this conundrum: A polarized country in which bipartisanship has somehow become normal. To do so, I spoke with Congress members from both parties, as well as Biden administration officials and outside experts. I emerged from the project believing that the U.S. was indeed a polarized country in many ways — but less polarized than people sometimes think.

The idea that Cohen talked to Trump about Daniels on that call “was a lie,” Blanche alleged. Moreover, my experience has been that juries don’t decide based upon one moment — they base their judgment on an overall view.”There were allegedly three parties aware of the scheme to conceal the real reason Trump paid Cohen more than $400,000 in supposed legal fees: Trump, Cohen and Allen Weisselberg, then-chief financial officer of the Trump Organization. “Weisselberg could be the linchpin to validate Cohen’s claims about Trump agreeing to reimburse him through Trump Organization, as a business expense,” wrote attorney Stacy Schneider. Trump seems to be tempted to go mano a mano and show that he is better fit to be commander-in-chief. The new requirement for GOP politicians wanting to demonstrate their loyalty to Trump seems to be visiting the Manhattan courthouse where he’s on trial.
