'You have to strike a balance'"Americans are equating success with happiness as to what money can buy," said Rickert. About 35% of polled Americans believe the economy is the top barrier to success, followed by income instability at 30%, the Empower report found.

A federal judge ruled Monday that a volleyball player for the San Jose State University women's team, who is at the center of controversy about transgender athletes, can compete in this week's conference tournament. Judge S. Kato Crews, with the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, denied the emergency motion for a preliminary injunction filed this month against the Mountain West Conference. "San José State University will continue to support its student-athletes and reject discrimination in all forms," the university said said. In today’s edition, senior politics reporter Alex Seitz-Wald breaks down the long-standing Democratic truisms that were challenged by the results of the 2024 elections. Here are five of the party’s core assumptions that have been challenged by the 2024 election outcome:1. Higher turnout benefits Democrats: Democrats have long taken for granted a simple truism: The more people who vote, the better for Democrats. NBC News exit polls show Trump won voters without college degrees 56%-42%, while he narrowly won voters with family incomes of $30,000 to $100,000 annually. But Trump won both the Electoral College and popular vote this year as Harris’ performance fell in those Democratic bastions.

It’s a “capital junkie” that’s been on a yearslong binge of unprecedented spending on all-electric and autonomous vehicles. Capital junkieThe latest cost-cutting cycle comes nearly a decade after an infamous Wall Street presentation by late-Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne called “Confessions of a Capital Junkie.” The April 2015 report highlighted the industry’s massive capital spending on overlapping or niche products that Marchionne was convinced could be solved through consolidation and shared capital spending. That’s shareholder money.”Most capital spending by automakers isn’t wasted, but the industry isn’t as efficient as other sectors, with minimal return on invested capital. While losing ground in China, GM has been among the most aggressive in spending on EVs and self-driving vehicles. GM and Hyundai this summer entered into an agreement to explore “future collaboration across key strategic areas” in an effort to reduce capital spending and increase efficiencies.

NBC News is helping shoppers answer those questions by tracking the online prices of five popular gift items in major categories this season. Second, retailers change prices regularly, making unannounced price cuts on various items all the time. Take the AirPods and the Ninja coffee maker, for example: This past weekend, both hit their lowest online prices since NBC News began tracking them months ago. Overall spending is projected to increase by 7% to an average of $1,638 per shopper this holiday season, according to PwC. The company foresees holiday discounts roughly as deep as those on offer last year but a “much stronger reaction from the consumer,” according to Adobe lead digital analyst Vivek Pandya.

Formula 1 announced Monday that it has approved the entry of GM and Cadillac as a new team on the grid, bringing a storied American car maker into the pinnacle of motorsport. But the added promise from GM to become a “works” team — building both a car and a power unit — led to a breakthrough. It will be the first time since 2016 that F1 has had more than 10 teams on the grid. One of those existing teams, Haas F1, is owned by American Gene Haas with headquarters in North Carolina. The move sets up a clash of two American car giants, GM and Ford, in Formula 1.

A federal judge on Monday is set to review the sale of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' media company to satirical publication The Onion after a pro-Jones bidder who offered twice as much cash challenged the transaction. Collins also wrote that the Onion plans to relaunch Infowars as "the dumbest website on the internet." Infowars was briefly shut down after the sale was announced before it resumed operating with Jones, who claimed the site was "hijacked." X Corp. is presumed to be an interested party because Jones uses X to broadcast his show and the case involves the potential transfer of Jones' X handle in the sale. Jones described the auction process as "fraudulent," but told his audience that regardless of what happens with Infowars, he won't be silenced.

Bird flu has been detected in a batch of raw milk sold in California stores and the state’s department of public health said Sunday that the public should not drink it. No one has become sick nor contracted the disease from this lot of raw milk, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) noted. It was the most individual rushing yards in a single game since 2009, and pushed Barkley to 1,392 yards on the season, a new career-high set in only 11 games. Already the NFL’s leader in yards from scrimmage, Barkley pushed his lead in that category by also catching four passes for 47 yards. Against the Rams, Philadelphia rushed for 314. ‘Wicked’ was initially, and always, intended to be a movieBut there’s another reason that feels just as obvious. One Churchill Place skyscraper, the Barclays Plc headquarters, at Canary Wharf in London, U.K., on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021. Britain's financial regulator said on Monday it had fined Barclays 40 million pounds ($50.9 million) in total for its failure to disclose certain arrangements with Qatari entities in 2008. The fine by the Financial Conduct Authority dates back to the height of the 2008-9 financial crisis, when Barclays scrambled to raise funds from overseas investors including Qatar in order to avoid a state bailout. The FCA at the time fined Barclays 50 million pounds, which the bank appealed. The interests of the bank, its shareholders and other stakeholders were best served by the withdrawal, Barclays said, adding that there was no material financial impact from the fine.

IN A TENSE moment midway through Edward Berger’s recent movie “Conclave,” a pulpy thriller about the process of selecting a new pope, Isabella Rossellini, playing a nun named Sister Agnes, enters a room full of cardinals from around the world. After asking permission to speak, Sister Agnes discreetly delivers a piece of information that will upend the papal election and expose some of the most powerful figures in the Roman Catholic Church to public, career-ending humiliation. For the rest of the film, Sister Agnes never says another word. For much of film history, women spoke less than men simply because their characters were seldom the story’s focus. The “strong, silent type” of westerns and detective stories was made strong by his silence, while female characters were typically weakened by theirs.
