Read previewA shooting at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday is drawing a flood of condemnation against the incident, supporting words for the former president, and, in less than an hour, unsubstantiated claims of a conspiracy. "God protected President Trump," Sen. Marco Rubio posted on X. Advertisement"I wish Donald Trump, and anyone else who may have been hurt, a speedy recovery," Sanders said in a statement on X. Some Trump supporters, however, were quick to find a scapegoat for the incident, blaming mainstream media and even spreading baseless claims that the shooting was a coordinated attack. And at least one prominent GOP lawmaker is suggesting conspiracy theories about the shooting.

"Mr. Biden may not be the ideal candidate, but he will be the candidate and should be the candidate," Sanders wrote. "And with an effective campaign that speaks to the needs of working families, he will not only defeat Mr. Trump but beat him badly." I will do all that I can to see that President Biden is re-elected. I strongly disagree with Mr. Biden on the question of U.S. support for Israel’s horrific war against the Palestinian people. I strongly disagree with the president’s belief that the Affordable Care Act, as useful as it has been, will ever address America’s health care crisis. Our health care system is broken, dysfunctional and wildly expensive and needs to be replaced with a “Medicare for all” single-payer system. Health care is a human right.

And yet one of the men, former President Donald Trump, 78, has been able to remake the Republican Party around his own divisive persona. Trump, between now and then, will pick a vice president from a short list of people who have previously criticized him but are now all in. Doug Burgum, who are also reportedly on Trump’s vice presidential short list, should be wary. A CNN poll released back in February, before Trump had sealed the Republican presidential nomination, suggested his top Republican rival, former South Carolina Gov. Inhofe's position as chair of the environmental committee offered him a prominent platform from which he denied the science behind climate change. Read previewUniversal basic income has made giant strides from its origins as a utopian vision toward becoming economic reality. Basic income trials have been conducted in countries as varied as Kenya, Finland, India, and Canada. Proponents of UBI say it reduces poverty, strengthens the social safety net, promotes health and happiness, and combats the stigma around welfare. Basic income recipients in a Finnish trial reported higher life satisfaction, improved health, and lower levels of depression and loneliness. An open questionUniversal basic income remains a largely theoretical idea that could have significant — and unpredictable — impacts on wealth inequality, human welfare, labor markets, and entire economies.

As the rest of the world zigs toward a four-day workweek, Greece is opting to zag. On Monday, a law came into effect that allows some companies to enforce a six-day workweek, a shift that is intended to prop up the country’s aging work force and compensate strapped workers, while respecting workers’ rights. Greece already has the longest average workweek in the European Union, and it is not clear whether the extended workweek will bolster productivity. The action in Greece stands in sharp contrast to much of the world. Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, in March pushed to reduce the standard workweek in the United States to 32 hours from 40 hours.

President Joe Biden speaks during a campaign rally at Girard College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 29. Andrew Harnik/Getty ImagesAt tomorrow’s CNN debate, President Joe Biden is planning to attack his predecessor as being unfit for office and unworthy of representing the United States on the world stage. Faiz Shakir, Sanders’s 2020 campaign manager, told CNN it was a smart and effective strategy that earned a lot of media coverage, because of the nature of the announcement. “It works when you have actually relevant and new info to share, whenever that is,” Shakir told CNN. Democrats’ 2024 platform is still being drafted by the Biden campaign and Democratic National Convention operatives, sources say, making it more likely a later debate sees a heavier focus on policies and personnel.

Some experts estimate that those practices could affect access to birth control for millions of women. Since 2012, the Affordable Care Act has mandated that private insurance plans cover the “full range” of contraceptives for women approved by the Food and Drug Administration, including female sterilizations, emergency contraceptives and any new products cleared by the F.D.A. The mandate also covers services associated with contraceptives, like counseling, insertions or removals and follow-up care. That means that consumers shouldn’t have any associated co-payments with in-network providers, even if they haven’t met their deductibles. Medicaid plans have a similar provision; the only exception to the mandate are plans sponsored by employers or colleges that have religious or moral objections.

And AIPAC’s attacks have galvanized a concerted countercampaign by the left to try to discredit the group, which is bipartisan, among Democratic voters. Mr. Latimer ran up large margins in more moderate suburban communities, including ones with sizable Jewish populations. Mr. Bowman’s opponents churned out an unusually large amount of opposition research against him, including old blog posts dabbling in Sept. 11 conspiracy theories. Mr. Latimer returned to the episode repeatedly to argue that Mr. “He’s making the party look really bad,” said Sandra Altman, citing Mr. Bowman’s fire alarm episode and his left-leaning views, as she voted for Mr. Latimer in Scarsdale.

In American politics, there is a difference between being old and seeming old — especially when appearing on TV. On TV, he looks ready to burst through your screen — which I find unsettling, but his fans really seem to enjoy. Then there’s Joe Biden, whose urgent challenge in the high-stakes presidential debate on Thursday is precisely this: how to be old on TV without seeming old — or worse, elderly. Mr. Biden is an effective president, but most people don’t watch how someone looks, sounds and moves on TV and think purely about his policy record. Coming across like an old friend, an old hand or even a grumpy old man can have plenty of upside, conveying warmth, experience, humor or a self-deprecating touch.

Now Israel’s champions, many of whom have never been comfortable with Bowman, are striking back, capitalizing on a political environment transformed by Oct. 7. Bowman’s challenger is the Westchester County executive, George Latimer, who refuses to criticize Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, putting Latimer not just to Bowman’s right but also to the right of President Biden and Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader. I think Sanders was exaggerating, but the contest is probably the most important congressional primary this year. It’s setting a precedent for big money interference in local politics and tearing at the longtime progressive alliance between Black people and Jews. There is something deeply admirable about his refusal to subordinate his values to political expediency.

When Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York won a Democratic primary in 2020 as an untested middle-school principal, his upset was heralded as evidence of the left’s ascent. Bowman is now the one fighting for his political life, battling to turn back a primary challenge from George Latimer, the Westchester County executive heavily backed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The results of Tuesday’s contest in the 16th Congressional District, which covers parts of Westchester County and the Bronx, may test the durability of the Democratic Party’s progressive faction: If Mr. Bowman was to lose, he would be the first member of the House’s left-wing “squad” to be unseated. Bowman trailing in the polls, some of the left’s biggest luminaries have come to his defense, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who joined Mr.

But unlike other speakers at the RNC, O’Brien’s appearance does not represent an endorsement of Trump, according to Teamsters union spokesperson Kara Deniz. CNN —Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer will lead a bipartisan congressional delegation to Israel this week, a notable show of support as a sizable number of Democrats say they are considering boycotting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress next month. The congressional delegation will also discuss the ongoing efforts to secure a temporary ceasefire and the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza by Hamas. While Congress passed a bill with aid to Ukraine and Israel in April, Democrats remain divided over Israel’s handling of its war against Hamas. CNN has spoken to dozens of Democratic lawmakers who have said they are considering boycotting Netanyahu’s speech, with several already publicly announcing their plans to not attend. “Because America’s relationship with Israel is ironclad and transcends one person or prime minister, I joined the request for him to speak,” he said earlier this month.
