CNN —Union Berlin’s head coach Nenad Bjelica was sent off for twice pushing Bayern Munich forward Leroy Sané in the face during a feisty Bundesliga encounter on Wednesday. As players and coaching staff rushed in to separate the pair, Bjelica again put his hand in Sané’s face. On the pitch, Bayern Munich was keen to hit back after losing to Werder Bremen last time out. Despite all its first-half dominance, Bayern began to creak as the game wore on and Union Berlin had a number of chances to equalize. The referee waved away the protests from Union Berlin’s players and Bayern managed to hold on for an important win.

The demonstrations came in the wake of a report that right-wing extremists recently met to discuss the deportation of millions of immigrants, including some with German citizenship. Some members of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, were present at the meeting. Additional protests planned for Sunday in other major German cities, including Berlin, Munich and Cologne, are also expected to draw tens of thousands of people. What started out as relatively small gatherings have grown into protests that, in many cases, are drawing far more participants than organizers expected. The protests also build on growing anxiety over the last year about the AfD’s rising support among the German electorate.

However, the top flight of English soccer had never seen an Australian manager in its 31-year history – that is until the arrival of Ange Postecoglou. Ian MacNicol/Getty ImagesThe Australian was greeted with a similar reception when he was hired by London club Tottenham in the summer of 2023. “He’s inspired Australian football and inspired Australian football coaches,” Dr. Craig Duncan, one of the nation’s leading sports scientists who worked with Postecoglou during his tenure with the Socceroos – the Australian national team – told CNN Sport. So much so that, according to Duncan, many Australian football fans he has spoken to will immediately check the score of Tottenham’s matches when they wake up. “This isn’t about us playing good football, it’s about us winning games of football,” Postecoglou told reporters after a recent 2-1 defeat by West Ham.

CNN —Manchester United is on the brink of an early Champions League exit after twice throwing away a two-goal lead in a chaotic 3-3 draw with Galatasaray. In the Champions League, you get punished for your mistakes, so we have to learn from that.” Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to TNT Sports after his team's 3-3 draw to Galatasaray on November 29. United has now conceded 14 goals in just five Champions League group matches, the most by an English club after five games in the competition’s history, according to Opta. Bayern had already qualified for the knockout stages ahead of the team’s 0-0 draw with Copenhagen on Tuesday. The team’s only chance of reaching the Champions League knockout stages is to beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in the final group game and hope that Copenhagen and Galatasaray draw.

MADRID (AP) — The latest international break is proving costly for several European clubs, including Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both teams will be depleted by the injury absences of important players affected by the “FIFA virus” while on duty with their national teams. Media in Spain and other countries refer to injuries sustained on international duty as the “FIFA virus.” And the injury to Gavi is another example. Camavinga started all four of Madrid’s Champions League games and appeared in all 13 of its Spanish league matches this season. FIFA approved its insurance program for clubs when Bayern Munich official Karl-Heinz Rummenigge complained after Arjen Robben got injured with the Netherlands at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Xabi Alonso has always done things at his own speed. As he contemplated the idea of becoming a coach, he saw no reason to change. He did not start out on the second phase of his career with a five-year or a 10-year plan in mind. “But I had not really mapped anything out.”There were plenty of people who were more than happy to do it for him. Everything about Alonso seemed to indicate not only that he would go into management when his playing days drew to a close, but almost that he should.

The pacey 17-year-old winger was born in a Tanzanian refugee camp to Burundian parents before moving to Perth as an infant and then on to Adelaide, where he took up the game. "There were multiple teams interested and I had to make the choice and I made the choice of Bayern Munich. CNN —It’s safe to say that Harry Kane is enjoying life in Germany. The England captain made his high-profile move from boyhood club Tottenham to Bayern Munich in August and he hasn’t looked back. No player has scored more after 11 Bundesliga games, with Bayern’s former talisman Robert Lewandowski holding the previous record of 16. Kane, the league’s top scorer, also has four goals in the Champions League with Bundesliga leaders Bayern yet to drop points in the group stage. “It is impressive,” Bayern Munich’s sports director Christoph Freund said, per Reuters, after Kane’s double in the team’s 4-2 win against Heidenheim.

"It is impressive," beamed Bayern sports director Christoph Freund after Saturday's double in their 4-2 victory over Heidenheim. Kane already has more goals after 11 Bundesliga matches than last season's top scorers had in the entire campaign. Kane has also scored four times in four Champions League group matches, with Bayern having already secured a spot in the knockout stage with two games to spare. "I believe he can do anything," said Bayern team mate Thomas Mueller. Club bosses are equally delighted with Kane's goal bonanza, saying the move was the right one for both Bayern and the title-starved Kane.

Sterling misses out on England selection again

LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling was again left out by England manager Gareth Southgate as he named his squad for the forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. Sterling, who has earned 82 caps for his country and was once a key part of Southgate's forward line, has now missed five successive England squads. Despite Southgate saying the door remains open, time is clearly running out for Sterling to force his way back into the reckoning for the Euro 2024 finals. Manchester City's John Stones misses out because of injury while Chelsea's Reece James is also not included despite recently returning from a lengthy injury lay-off. "I'm super excited about the tournament, we're really gearing towards the next tournament and I think everybody in international football is always living from tournament to tournament.

The best striker in Tottenham history looked up last weekend, 60 yards from goal with the ball at his feet, and liked what he saw. The goalkeeper was far off his line—it was an invitation to shoot. So Harry Kane launched an effort that traveled half the length of the field, looped over the keeper, and instantly in as one of the goals of the season. It was the kind of inspiration that had dazzled Tottenham fans for a decade. The trouble was that Tottenham’s greatest forward no longer plays for Tottenham—Kane was making long-distance magic these days for Bayern Munich.

CNN —Bayern Munich crashed out of the German Cup following a shock 2-1 defeat deep into stoppage time against third-tier FC Saarbrücken on Wednesday. Marcel Gaus scored the winning goal for Saarbrücken in the 96th minute, converting a low cross to spark delirium among the home fans. Bayern gave up possession after sloppy play at the back, and several Saarbrücken passes later, Patrick Sontheimer had a simple finish to make it 1-1 at Ludwigsparkstadion. As the game moved into stoppage time, substitute Tim Civeja found space behind the Bayern defense and crossed to Gaus, who netted an unlikely winning goal for Saarbrücken. MUNICH, Germany, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich's German Cup second round game at third-tier Saarbruecken on Wednesday hangs in the balance due to the hosts' pitch conditions with a decision expected on matchday, Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said on Tuesday. Heavy rain in previous days has made the pitch almost unplayable with the German Football Association (DFB) set to inspect it two more times before a decision is taken. That was always the plan and has nothing to do with the pitch," Tuchel told a press conference. "If the DFB decides tomorrow that we will play I hope that it will be under normal conditions," Tuchel said. CNN —England captain Harry Kane has settled into life in the Bundesliga with aplomb and, on Saturday, the forward scored a sensational goal from inside his own half during Bayern Munich’s dismantling of Darmstadt 98, echoing the exploits of former England captain David Beckham nearly 30 years ago. “I just saw the keeper out the corner of my eye in a strange position,” he told Sky Sports afterwards. Bayern Munich won 8-0. Tom Weller/dpa/APThe goal also contributed to Kane’s hat trick on Saturday as Bayern Munich defeated Darmstadt 98 8-0 following an extraordinary game which contained three red cards in the first half – one for Bayern and two for Darmstadt – and eight goals in the second half. Since joining the German club after a 19-year stint at Tottenham Hotspur, Kane has scored 14 goals in 13 games and is currently the second-most prolific goalscorer in the Bundesliga after Serhou Guirassy.

BERLIN, Oct 26 (Reuters) - There is more at stake for Bayern Munich keeper Manuel Neuer when he makes his possible return to action in the Bundesliga on Saturday against Darmstadt 98 almost a year after injury. He did not travel to Bayern's Champions League game against Galatasaray in Istanbul on Tuesday to continue training while a rumoured return in the league last week did not materialise. "We have to wait and see," Bayern's Tuchel said on Tuesday when asked whether Neuer will return this week. A Bayern comeback for Neuer would mean that veteran keeper Sven Ulreich, who has been outstanding in his absence, will quickly slip back into his usual reserve role. Victory over visiting Darmstadt, in 12th place, could move Bayern provisionally into top spot, with Leverkusen, also unbeaten, in action against Freiburg on Sunday.

CNN —Manchester United relied on two unlikely heroes – goalkeeper André Onana and defender Harry Maguire – in a much-needed Champions League victory against FC Copenhagen. Onana's penalty save denied Copenhagen late in the game. The Cameroonian international has made several errors since joining United this season, including in a Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich last month.
