However, despite the measures, which have mainly focused on monetary policy, the World Bank's 2025 growth projection was unchanged from earlier projections. The international lender estimated that China's growth rate would drop to 4.3% next year, down from a projected 4.8% in 2024, in an economic update on Tuesday. China's economic growth rate is expected to decline further in 2025 despite a temporary boost from recent stimulus measures, according to the World Bank. The World Bank has long advocated for China to boost its growth through bold policy actions such as unleashing competition, upgrading infrastructure, and reforming education. "For three decades, China's growth has spilled over beneficially to its neighbors, but the size of that impetus is now diminishing," the World Bank said in its Tuesday report.

British financial technology firm Revolut on Thursday criticized Facebook parent company Meta over its approach to tackling fraud, saying the U.S. tech giant should directly compensate people who fall victim to scams via its social media platforms. In a statement, Woody Malouf, Revolut's head of financial crime, said that Meta's plans to tackle financial fraud on its platforms amount to "baby steps, when what the industry really needs is giant leaps forward." "These platforms share no responsibility in reimbursing victims, and so they have no incentive to do anything about it. Britain's Payments System Regulator had previously recommended a £415,000 maximum compensation amount for fraud victims, but backed down following backlash from banks and payment firms. The fintech firm published a report Thursday alleging that 62% of user-reported fraud on its online banking platform originated from Meta, down from 64% last year.

But the past week's stimulus blitz did not offer fiscal support to China's discouraged consumers. AdvertisementChina's latest stimulus blitz offers everything but one key fix: new incentives to revive consumers. While Tuesday's stimulus package didn't address fiscal support, Chinese officials appear to be getting around to it. Even if China commits to bigger fiscal support in the near term, it could be too late to change things this year, Huang said. For instance, Chinese consumers are staying away from new housing projects even as China has introduced looser mortgage rates and downpayment rules.

Source: BloombergChina's central bank said on Friday it would cut the amount of cash that banks must hold as reserves by 50 basis points, the second reduction this year aimed at bolstering faltering economic growth. The People's Bank of China said it would cut the reserve requirement ratio for all banks, except those that have implemented a 5% reserve ratio. "The PBOC has adhered to a supportive monetary policy stance, increased the intensity of monetary policy regulation and control, and improved the precision of monetary policy regulation and control, so as to create a favourable monetary and financial environment for China's stable economic growth," its statement said.
