The other is clear air turbulence, which was involved in the Singapore Airlines incident. As the name implies, clear air turbulence is hard to anticipate since it isn't associated with clouds. It said that over a typical point, the most severe type of clear air turbulence increased by 55% between 1979 and 2020. The increasing difference in energy between the two layers means more energy goes into the jet stream, Gratton said. "Therefore crossing the Atlantic, climate change is making encounters with clear air turbulence more likely and more severe," he added.

Much of the growth, from a forecast 21% market share this year, is expected to come outside of China. The rapid expansion of Chinese automakers is a growing concern for legacy automakers and politicians globally. In North America, Chinese automakers are forecast to only achieve a 3% market share, largely in Mexico, where one in five vehicles are expected to be Chinese brands by 2030. In most other major regions of the world, AlixPartners reports that the share of Chinese automakers is expected to exponentially grow. Chinese brands in China also are expected to grow from 59% to 72% in market share, according to AlixPartners.

Gold hits one-week high on Fed rate cut bets

An employee handles one kilogram gold bullions at the YLG Bullion International Co. headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, Dec. 22, 2023. Gold prices climbed to their highest level in a week on Thursday as softer U.S. economic data increased the likelihood of interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve this year. Spot gold was up 0.3% at $2,333.62 per ounce as of 0329 GMT after hitting its highest since June 12 earlier. "I am still favoring moves to the upside for the gold market in light of where we currently stand on the interest rate curve, which is at the peak," said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade. "The gold market seems content to consolidate recent gains rather than reach higher at this stage, at least until we see some further evidence of softening U.S. macro data, which could alter the interest rate outlook."

Thailand passes landmark bill recognising marriage equality
  + stars: | 2024-06-18 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Thailand's Senate passed the final reading of a marriage equality law on Tuesday, paving the way for the country to become the third territory in Asia to recognize same-sex couples after Nepal and Taiwan. The law gained the support of nearly all upper house lawmakers and will be sent to the palace for royal approval. LGBTQ+ advocates called the move a "monumental step forward" as it would make Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to enact marriage equality legislation. Thailand is already known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ culture and tolerance, making it a popular destination for tourists. "This would underscore Thailand's leadership in the region in promoting human rights and gender equality," the Civil Society Commission of marriage equality, activists and LGBTI+ couples said.

The result of the vote means that Thailand will become only the third place in Asia to allow for marriage equality after Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage in 2019 and Nepal in 2023. Mark Phillips/CNNPrevious attempts to legalize marriage equality over the past decade had stalled. Nonetheless Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, of the Pheu Thai Party, had also promised to bring the marriage equality bill to parliament. Japan is the only Group of Seven (G7) country that has not recognized either same-sex civil unions or same-sex marriage, despite recent high court decisions that ruled not allowing same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. South Korea does not legally recognize same-sex marriage but in February 2023, a South Korean court ruled in favor of a same-sex couple seeking equal health benefits.

An employee handles one kilogram gold bullions at the YLG Bullion International Co. headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, Dec. 22, 2023. Gold prices were flat on Wednesday as investors awaited the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy announcement for insights into how soon it will cut interest rates this year and the May inflation report due later in the day. "Gold prices have been treading lightly amid the waiting game for greater cues on the Fed's policy path. Any lean towards two rate cuts could be perceived as a more dovish take, which may see gold prices head higher," said IG market strategist Yeap Jun Rong. Demand for gold in Asia is surging despite prices hovering near the record highs it hit in May, industry officials said.
