For years, Marco Bizzarri was one of the most well-known and respected executives in the global luxury business. Bald and boldly suited, he was the architect behind the meteoric success of Gucci, the largest fashion brand in the stable owned by the French group Kering, which also includes Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Saint Laurent. The news was buried in the third paragraph of a memo Kering released that outlined a major organizational shake-up as François-Henri Pinault, the chairman and chief executive, tries to write a new chapter for the fortunes of Gucci and the conglomerate. In the same announcement, Kering said Francesca Bellettini, the chief executive of Yves Saint Laurent, would become the conglomerate’s deputy chief executive for brand development, a promotion that will require all Kering brand chief executives to report to her and make her one of the most powerful women in the luxury industry. Jean-Marc Duplaix, Kering’s chief financial officer, will also become a deputy chief executive, overseeing operations and finance.

A Fossil Dream as Big as Texas

Most people come to Ox Ranch — an 18,000-acre property outside Uvalde, Texas — for the thrill of hunting exotic animals in the Hill Country. Mr. LuJan is a commercial paleontologist, bald and often dressed in dinosaur-themed shirts and socks, who collects fossils and assesses their value for private clients. Such arrangements are not unusual in the vast and wealthy state, which is in the middle of a paleontological renaissance. That won’t be the case with Ox Ranch, and Mr. LuJan has bigger ambitions. But Mr. LuJan sees a paleontological void in the state, which has no public museum devoted solely to its fossil treasures.

Researchers hoped to find evidence of a healthy new generation of ospreys when they checked 84 nests of the fish-eating bird in mid-June at Mobjack Bay, an inlet at the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay. It was the lowest reproductive number in more than 50 years of monitoring the local population of the raptor, according to scientists at the College of William & Mary. And they said it represented the latest evidence in a long-term decline in breeding success due to the bay-wide depletion of the bird’s favorite food — Atlantic menhaden. The fish are nutrient-rich, a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids; they consume smaller organisms like plankton and they filter huge quantities of ocean water. But they are also a mainstay of the commercial fishing industry, caught in mass quantities to be processed into bait for crabs and lobsters, and in greater volume for so-called reduction fisheries, in which they are ground up and turned into products including fish oil and fish meal.

A female bald eagle abducted Tuffy, a baby hawk, from his nest and began caring for him as her own. This behavior has only been spotted in the wild four other times, the Los Angeles Times reports. This behavior — strange, according to experts, because eagles prey on hawks — is even more exciting for bird enthusiasts because it has only been seen in the wild four other times, the Los Angeles Times reports. Doug Gillard — former Olympian hammer thrower turned birdwatcher — was the first to spot the strange family in a Bay Area forest, and has nicknamed the baby hawk Tuffy. He now lives with his adoptive parents and their child, whom Gillard nicknamed Lola, according to the Los Angeles Times.

How to Make Your Walk a ‘Microadventure’

I decided to take a “scent walk” with my best friend, Julie, who lives in Morningside Heights in New York City. Rob Mastrianni, a park ranger in Manhattan, who recommended taking a walk with the express goal of spotting wildlife. If there’s a safe way to take a walk in the rain, wind or fog, “lean into the elements,” said Rob Walker, the author of “The Art of Noticing,” a book about finding opportunities to be amazed in everyday life. Revel in the dramatically shifting landscapes — the drama of wind whipping through the trees, or the way that rain can make greenery look more vivid. “I don’t want to encourage anyone to go kick a football around in a hurricane,” Walker said.

Tesla is the most American car brand
  + stars: | 2023-06-21 | by ( Graham Rapier | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +1 min
Last year, Tesla only claimed the two top spots. Tesla may not have ads featuring American icons like the Wild West, bald eagle, or stars-and-stripes galore, but it's still the most American car brand, at least based on its manufacturing. The survey takes five primary factors into account: final assembly location, origin of parts, origin of engines, origin of transmissions, and manufacturing workforce. To qualify for a $7,500 tax credit, new EVs and their batteries must be mostly assembled in the US — something that's benefitting Tesla greatly so far. Tesla is set to receive billions in other credits, too, thanks to its early investment in manufacturing stateside as other automakers race to catch up.

Modi, a strict Hindu who follows a vegetarian diet, will be served a first course that includes a grilled corn kernel salad and tangy avocado sauce, the White House said. With the slightly Indian-accented dinner, the Bidens are following a White House tradition of serving guests from abroad food that has faint echos of home with a strong American bent. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's 2009 state dinner featured basmati rice, but also White House grown arugula and pumpkin pie tarts. The tables will be adorned with lotus blooms, revered in Indian design and a symbol of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. In some cases, patients like Ms. MacKenzie with cancer that has spread inside their bodies — called metastatic disease — are able to stay alive much longer than previously predicted. Until recently, the prevailing wisdom in oncology was that many early-stage cancer patients could be cured, but metastatic disease was almost always incurable. This thinking drove cancer research, treatment and care for decades. Since metastatic disease was usually considered incurable, research focused on early-stage disease. Right now, two relatively new classes of cancer drugs are displacing traditional chemotherapy for many types of cancer and giving metastatic patients, in particular, more time.

This is the first time a former American president has been arraigned on federal charges. Jill Filipovic Courtesy of Jill FilipovicFormer President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to all 37 federal charges at a federal courthouse in Miami on Tuesday afternoon. The indictment says that Trump willfully retained national security information, violated the Espionage Act more than 30 times, and conspired to obstruct justice, among other crimes. What is clear, though, is that this case will be a test of the US justice system and the strength of national institutions in a (for now) post-Trump America. Any president who is found to have used national security documents for bragging rights and flouted American law must be held accountable.

But speaking of forest fires, shall we get to that latest Trump indictment? Gail: We’re obviously in history-making territory — first former president indicted in a criminal case brought by the federal government. And this one, which involves trying to stash away official papers he’d been told were government property, is certainly a classic Trump combination of shocking and stupid. That may be about as close to a slam dunk, legally speaking, as we’re ever going to get in a case like this. Bret: The second thought is that a special counsel appointed by President Biden’s attorney general is bringing a criminal case against the president’s presumptive opponent in next year’s election.

Javice is accused of inflating the number Frank's users before she sold it to JPMorgan Chase. The charges represented a significant fall for one of the much-lauded young fintech founders. But within a year of selling Frank to JPMorgan Chase, the bank cried foul, claiming that the number of users had been wildly inflated. The complaint alleges that Javice bought names and email addresses from third parties and then represented them as Frank customers. Fergenson explained that Javice had made JPMorgan Chase, "believe that Frank had been an extremely successful start up."

At first, people thought it might be a housing shortage. Scientists had noticed worrisome declines in the American kestrel, a small, flashy falcon found coast to coast. The downturn was especially puzzling because birds of prey in North America are largely considered a conservation bright spot. “Why are all these other raptors doing great when the American kestrel is on the decline?” said Chris McClure, who directs global conservation science at the Peregrine Fund, a conservation group. Scientists and members of the public set out nest boxes, and kestrels moved in.

In a room hung with empathetic black-and-white photographic portraits for her retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Judith Joy Ross, frail-looking and white-haired, was recently taking pictures for her next series. Posing a guard in front of her old-fashioned wooden view camera, she chattered on in an obscenity-laced monologue about her ineptitude. “That’s great,” she gushed. “Everybody can see that’s great. Utah's new flag design is ruffling feathers, and people are already trying to replace it. Spencer Cox said that he should "have known better" that the new flag would be unpopular. Brandon Beckham, a member of Utah's Republican party central committee, told the Journal that the new design is "just a logo." "The original Utah flag has built in its ideals that are true to the founding of the state that are linked to history," Beckham told the Journal. Ryan Woods, a conservative drag performer known as Lady MAGA USA, said the change flies in the face of history.
West Ham remain in trouble in 15th place, four points above the relegation zone. West Ham, hampered by the absence of midfielders Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek, defended valiantly with the colossal Angelo Ogbonna heading away cross after cross. Foden then put the icing on his side's ninth successive league win with the 1,000th goal in Guardiola's City reign. As well as five league games left, City are in the semi-finals of the Champions League and FA Cup final.

And rather than simply translate his hot-ticket cabaret act for American living rooms, Belafonte imagined something stranger and more alluring. “The bleaker my acting prospects looked,” Belafonte wrote, in “My Song,” his memoir from 2011, “the more I threw myself into political organizing.” That organizing took familiar forms — marches, protests, rallies. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with Coretta Scott King as the beneficiary, because Dr. King didn’t believe he could afford it. (“Martin began drafting his antiwar speech in my apartment.”) So, yes, Belafonte was near the psychic core and administrative center of the movement. But those bleak Hollywood prospects — some incalculable combination of racism and too-raw talent — kept Belafonte uniquely earthbound, doing a kind of cultural organizing.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) listens as Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) speaks at a press conference on the Senate’s upcoming procedural vote to codify Roe v. Wade at the U.S. Capitol Building on May 05, 2022 in Washington, DC. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday strongly condemned Fox News host Tucker Carlson for airing footage of the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection to portray it as a peaceful visit to the U.S. Capitol. Schumer, D-N.Y., also criticized in blistering terms House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., for giving Carlson and Fox News exclusive access to 44,000 hours of Capitol security footage that Carlson used to build that false narrative for his broadcast Monday evening. "I and so many others who were here" on Jan. 6, 2021, "are just furious with Tucker Carson and Kevin McCarthy today," Schumer said on the Senate floor. And he said Carlson had cherry-picked security footage to make "bald-faced lies" about the invasion of the Capitol by hundreds of supporters of then-President Donald Trump.

Language in the latest editions of some Roald Dahl books has been changed, The Telegraph reported. The Roald Dahl Story Company said the changes mean the books "can continue to be enjoyed by all." Roald Dahl, who died in 1990, is one of the most successful authors of all time. The Roald Dahl Story Company, which manages the copyright of Roald Dahl's books and collaborated with Puffin to update the texts, said that "the irreverence and sharp-edged spirit" of the original books had not been lost. Many of Roald Dahl's books have been turned into films or TV shows.
JuE Wong said that Olaplex's hair care products are "safe and effective" in a LinkedIn post. The company is facing a lawsuit that claims Olaplex products damaged some customers' hair. But JuE Wong, Olaplex's CEO, said in a LinkedIn post on Thursday that Olaplex's products are not to blame for those problems. She quoted recent articles on Olaplex, including Insider's coverage, which say that a direct connection between the products and effects like hair loss are hard to prove.
