The company also plans to start localized assembly and production for its products in Indonesia from the second quarter of 2024, it said. Wang Chengjie, president director of PT NETA Auto Indonesia, said the local assembly plant will have a production capacity of 30,000 units annually. Hozon, which exported 6,970 cars in the first half of this year, has been selling its Neta EVs to Southeast Asian countries including Thailand, Myanmar and Nepal. It is building its first overseas plant in Thailand and aims to start production there in January 2024. Hozon's Neta V was the second best-selling EV in Southeast Asia in the first quarter, following BYD's Atto 3, according to research firm Counterpoint.

Those talks continued over the past week with Tesla discussing minute details of its plans to gain access to India's fast-growing EV market, and Modi personally tracking developments, sources say. Months after seeking clearance for its own $1 billion investment in India, BYD is no longer keen to pursue the approval, Reuters reported. India has told Tesla it will allow its Chinese suppliers into the country if they forge partnerships with local firms, just like Apple did. Tesla does not currently sell vehicles in India. BYD executives told Megha Engineering last week that the battery and EV maker wanted to drop pursuit of the investment, according to the two people with knowledge of that exchange. BYD, China's largest EV maker, declined to comment on the status of its investment proposal and whether it would pull the plan to produce electric cars in India. Megha Engineering did not respond to request to comment. A final decision on whether to approve BYD's investment proposal would be taken by Indian ministries of trade and heavy industries. In 2013 it started building electric buses in India with Megha Engineering, under a joint venture company called Olectra Greentech (OLEC.NS).

NEW DELHI, July 22 (Reuters) - India has rejected Chinese automaker BYD Co's (002594.SZ) proposal to set up a $1 billion factory in India in partnership with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd, the Economic Times reported on Saturday. Reuters reported this month that BYD had submitted a $1 billion investment proposal to build electric cars and batteries in India in partnership with a local company. Reuters could not independently verify the contents of The Economic Times' report. India's Department of Commerce, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) had sought opinions from other departments on the investment proposal, the report said. "Security concerns with respect to Chinese investments in India were flagged during the deliberations," the report quoted an Indian official as saying.

BANGKOK, July 20 (Reuters) - Chinese automakers dominated Southeast Asia's fast-growing electric vehicle market, selling three out of every four EVs in the first quarter, research firm Counterpoint Research said on Thursday. Thailand - the main regional auto manufacturing hub - is driving the transition, with the country accounting for almost 79% of all EVs sold in Southeast Asia in the first quarter, Counterpoint said. "Chinese auto groups are experiencing rapid growth and outpacing their competitors in the SEA (Southeast Asia) region, with their market share increasing from 38% a year ago to nearly 75%," Counterpoint analyst Abhilash Gupta said. With Chinese EV offerings expanding, Counterpoint said the share of EVs as a percent of total vehicle sales in Southeast Asia could reach 6% by the end of 2023. Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia are the largest auto markets in Southeast Asia.

REUTERS/Nick Carey/File PhotoNEW DELHI, July 14 (Reuters) - China's BYD Co (002594.SZ) has submitted a $1 billion investment proposal to build electric cars and batteries in India in partnership with a local company, three people with direct knowledge of the plan told Reuters. The longer-term plan is to build a full line-up of BYD-brand EVs in India from hatchbacks to luxury models, one of the three people said. BYD, the world's largest producer of EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. If the India investment is approved, it would give BYD a presence in all major global car markets with the exception of the United States. The investment proposal also includes a plan by BYD and Megha to set up charging stations in India and build research and development and training centres, the sources said.

Japanese automakers are so dominant that for decades they have treated it almost as an extension of their home market. Thailand's transition offers a test case for other economies as Chinese automakers ramp up exports and build overseas production hubs, partly in response to a hypercompetitive home market for electric cars.

Tesla reported record deliveries of 466,140 globally for the second quarter. This was also the first time BYD's monthly sales surpassed 250,000 units and meant that between April to June, BYD delivered 700,244 vehicles, the data showed. The Denza N7 is set to begin deliveries in about two weeks, according to the company. In another page from Nio's playbook, the Denza N7 launch in Beijing was followed by a live music performance. Its prior electric model, the D9 multi-purpose vehicle, claims more than 10,000 sales a month since since March. At the time Zeng said he expected competition in China's new energy vehicle market would move into the 400,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan price range and above. The 100,000 yuan to 200,000 yuan price range has been the primary price range for cars in China, Zeng said.

HONG KONG, June 19 (Reuters) - A Hong Kong court on Monday charged four men with criminal damage to property at showrooms and a service centre of Chinese automaker BYD Co Ltd after they were vandalised last week in the financial hub. The men arrested were all of Chinese nationality and aged between 29-48 years, according to charge-sheets released by the court. None of them made any pleas in the court on Monday. All will be kept in the custody of the correctional services department until the next hearing on July 17. Police said last week that there was no evidence that the men had deliberately targeted the mainland auto brand and that an investigation was ongoing.

In the last few years, however, this outlook has changed to "Tesla, BYD , and everyone else," according to Evercore. Chinese EV-manufacturer BYD sold more NEVs, or new energy vehicles, in 2022 than Tesla. Evercore noted that BYD's sales guidance for China in 2023 could potentially exceed the total EV sales in the U.S. and EU combined from 2022. "In many respects, such as battery and commercial vehicle platforms, BYD is already leading TSLA & others. Correction: Chinese EV-manufacturer BYD sold more NEVs, or new energy vehicles, in 2022 than Tesla.

Michael Wayland/CNBCDETROIT — Ford Motor's largest competition in electric vehicles isn't U.S. leader Tesla or crosstown rival General Motors — it's Chinese automakers, CEO Jim Farley said Thursday. Farley said Chinese companies such as Warren Buffett-backed BYD are ahead of the large U.S. automakers and startups on electric vehicles, specifically battery chemistry and other emerging technologies. And they were always committed to electric," Farley said when asked which company is doing EVs right. Farley's comments echo those of industry experts and investors regarding the growth of BYD and other Chinese automakers, which have government backing in China. Farley also noted BYD's battery advantages compared to the current U.S. industry standard of lithium-ion batteries.
In an era defined by the need to tackle climate change, electric vehicles are seen as an increasingly important part of the solution. For Philip Ripman, portfolio manager at Storebrand Asset Management, one global EV automaker stands out: China's BYD — not Elon Musk's Tesla . Public transport operator Nobina already operates over 300 BYD electric buses across multiple Nordic cities. Affordable and high-end vehicles Another reason Ripman favors BYD over Tesla is the former's broader range of vehicles. On Tesla, Ripman expressed some concern over CEO Musk's distractions and their potential impact on the automaker's stock price.
Current BYD recruiting advertisements for engineers specialising in autonomous driving that target top Chinese universities such as Zhejiang University, indicate that the hiring is ongoing. BYD set up an intelligent driving research division in Shanghai last year, according to three sources with direct knowledge of the matter. The automaker, which is 9.87% owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N) and had some 660,000 employees as of April, declined to elaborate on its autonomous driving strategy. BYD has also this year teamed up with autonomous driving chip technology firms Nvidia (NVDA.O) and Horizon Robotics (RBOT.TO), saying it wanted to develop more intelligent vehicles. Both are high-volume models and further advances in BYD autonomous driving features would popularise the technology within China.
After years of eyeing the American market, Chinese brands are poised to arrive. After years of preparation, Chinese car companies are poised to upend the US electric-vehicle market. Chinese EV manufacturers can gain a foothold in the US by coming in at a budget price point, analysts said. "I've driven a number of the Chinese EV brands, and boy oh boy, the Europeans are in trouble." The sheer size of the US car market means new entrants will need to build locally to compete seriously in the long term, he said.
SHANGHAI, May 10 (Reuters) - BYD Co Ltd (002594.SZ), on Wednesday cut the starting price of its best-selling Seal sedan by 10%, as the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant seeks to extend its lead in the world's largest auto market with lower-priced products. That includes a rear-wheel drive Seal Champion Edition with a 550-km (342-mile) driving range per charge at a starting price of 189,800 yuan ($27,459). BYD, China's best-selling electrified vehicle maker, launched the Seal sedan under its Ocean series in July 2022 with a sporty design style and intelligent features. The EV price war is also drawing sales away from internal combustion engine vehicles as the price gap between the technologies narrows. It has outgrown Germany's Volkswagen as the best-selling passenger vehicle brand in China in the last two quarters.
The trend will spread abroad with growing exports of China-made electric SUVs. The market for SUVs has boomed in China over the past decade and now represents almost 40% of all cars sold, with 400 SUV models of all fuel types. Legacy automakers Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), BMW (BMWG.DE) and Toyota (7203.T) are counting on new electric SUVs to bolster China sales. Tesla and Renault (RENA.PA) have already been exporting their China-made electric SUVs to Europe on a large scale. Chinese automakers have their own plans to grow electric SUV sales to Europe.
SHANGHAI, May 10 (Reuters) - BYD Co Ltd (002594.SZ), launched on Wednesday five lower-priced versions of its Seal sedan, as the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant seeks to extend its lead in the world's largest market for new-energy cars. That is also 18% cheaper than the rear-wheel drive version of Tesla Inc's (TSLA.O) Model 3 in China with a driving range of 556 kilometres, against which the Seal model seeks to compete. China's EV market is in the throes of a price war started by Tesla earlier this year, with several EV makers including BYD following the U.S. automaker's example by cutting prices for best-selling models this year to defend market share. The EV price war is also drawing sales away from internal combustion engine vehicles as the price gap between the technologies narrows. BYD has so far led the new energy vehicle (NEV) market with its various offerings of battery-only and plug-in hybrid models priced under 300,000 yuan.

Chinese automaker BYD to make EVs in Vietnam
  + stars: | 2023-05-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
HANOI, May 8 (Reuters) - Chinese automaker BYD Co. (002594.SZ) plans to expand into electric vehicles manufacturing and assembly in Vietnam, according to a Vietnamese government statement citing the company's chair. Reuters in January exclusively reported that the Xian-based EV maker had plans to open a plant in Vietnam to produce car parts, with the aim to export components to an assembly plant planned in neighbouring Thailand. The statement did not mention how much new investment BYD would top up for the expansion. The presence of BYD would pose a direct challenge to VinFast, a Vietnamese EV maker that began selling cars in 2019 and plans to expand in the United States and Europe. Last September, BYD, backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, announced that it would build an EV assembly plant in Thailand with annual capacity of 150,000 cars from 2024.
