BEIJING — For the first time in China, new energy vehicles have outsold traditional fuel-powered passenger cars on a monthly basis, according to China Passenger Car Association data for July. The category accounted for 51% of new passenger cars sold in China last month, according to a release late Thursday. That's up from a penetration rate of 36% exactly a year ago, and a dip below one-third in January, according to CNBC calculations of passenger car association data. The latest report showed that battery-only cars outsold hybrid ones in July — for a battery-only penetration rate of 28%. However, monthly sales and delivery figures from BYD , Li Auto and other car companies indicated consumers in China increasingly preferred hybrid-powered vehicles.

For the third quarter, Uber expects bookings of $40.25 billion to $41.75 billion. Uber's "monthly active platform consumers" (MAPCs) reached 156 million in the second quarter with 2.77 billion trips via the Uber platform. This compares to 137 million MAPCs and 2.28 billion trips during the same period a year ago. Uber also reported $1.02 billion in net income for the quarter, which included a $333 million pre-tax benefit from "revaluations of Uber's equity investments." BEIJING — Uber and BYD announced Wednesday that drivers on the ride-hailing platform can get pricing and financing deals for the Chinese company's electric cars, starting in Europe and Latin America. The two companies will also develop "autonomous-capable vehicles" for Uber's platform, according to a press release. Japanese companies established Thailand’s auto industry virtually from scratch, dating back to the years after World War II. By the late 1970s, Japanese brands commanded around 90 percent of car sales in Thailand. Hong Kong CNN —China’s BYD, which vies with Tesla for the title of the world’s top maker of battery electric vehicles, has agreed to build a $1 billion car factory in Turkey, the Turkish government has announced. “We aim to meet the growing demand for new-energy vehicles in the region and reach consumers in Europe,” the statement cited BYD representatives as saying. The EU’s decision earlier this year imposed an extra 17.4% tariff on the vehicles BYD ships from China to the bloc, which also has a standard 10% duty on all car imports. Talks between the EU and China are expected to continue but, if no agreement is reached, the additional tariffs will become definitive in November. BYD already announced in December that it would build an EV factory in EU member Hungary, becoming the first major Chinese automaker to build passenger cars in Europe.
