The U.S. women’s 4×400 relay team, the final track event at an epic Olympics, blazed to the gold medal with a time of 3:15.27. Shamier Little, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas and Alexis Holmes put together a dominant performance illustrative of American track and field’s dominance in the 33rd Olympiad. It doubled the gold medal count from the Tokyo Games when it took home 26 total medals. Thomas won her third gold medal of these games: one in the 200-meter hurdles, and two as the third leg in both relays. McLaughlin-Levrone secured her second gold medal, joining Thomas and Rai Benjamin as the Americans in track and field with multiple golds.

Tola surged clear and never looked back (Cameron Spencer/Getty Images)After letting the little-known Eyob Faniel of Italy lead for most of the first half of the race, Tola made his first move just before the halfway mark. Tola crossed the line an Olympic record time (Andrej Isakovic/AFP via Getty Images)Most remarkably, Tola didn’t even make the Ethiopian team originally. “I trained hard so I could win,” Tola said. Even his compatriot, Kenenisa Bekele, one of the most decorated Ethiopian distance runners but at 42 nearing the end of his career, was gushing after finishing 39th. “Not easy to win the Olympic Games,” he said, in perhaps the understatement of the past two weeks in Paris.

Paris CNN —For two-time Olympic track and field champion Caster Semenya, Paris 2024’s boxing was unusually poignant. She took light welterweight gold on Friday night, besting her Chinese opponent in a dominant performance. But her Olympics have been marred by allegations over her gender, citing a 2023 decision by a now-discredited boxing regulator to bar her from a women’s tournament. Khelif was, “born female, was registered female, lived her life as a female, boxed as a female, has a female passport,” with IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said. The IOC should be “making sure that all athletes that take part in Olympics are well protected,” Semenya said.

Previously, running shoes were “flats” designed with a less-is-more approach. Carbon-plated supershoes from various brands are now worn by your average runners chasing personal records at major marathons around the world. Since the Vaporfly’s debut in 2016, runners have shattered world records, including achieving a sub-two-hour marathon. Japanese marathon runner Yusuke Ogura wears Nike Zoom Vaporfly running shoes in Marugame City in 2020. But while supershoes have transformed the landscape of professional running, the sport requires much more than a sturdy pair of running shoes.

The decorated Kenyan runner hopes to change that in Paris over the coming days, entering the women’s marathon race as one of the favorites for the title. This will be Obiri’s fourth Games, making her a veteran in the women’s marathon field. Her introduction to marathon running, it’s fair to say, has been a learning curve. “When I go to the race, they [my coaches] told me that the marathon, it’s about being patient, waiting until the last minute,” said Obiri. Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, the current world record holder, is also a strong contender for the gold medal.

Female athletes of color have historically faced disproportionate scrutiny and discrimination when it comes to sex testing and false accusations that they are male or transgender. Since the Tokyo Games in 2021, track’s World Athletics tightened the eligibility rules for female athletes with DSD conditions. Male athletes are not required to regulate their natural levels of testosterone, and female athletes who do not have DSD conditions also can benefit. In this dysfunction, boxing eligibility rules have not kept pace with other sports, and the issues weren’t addressed ahead of the Paris Games. She challenged track and field’s initial testosterone rules passed in 2011 as a reaction to Semenya.

In a fitting end to my athletic career, my husband and I got married after competing together on the college triathlon team. As our family continues to grow and change, we maintain a team-oriented approach that strengthens our bond in several ways. We continue to practice and improveSince we're still pretty new to the parenting game, we don't have much training under our belts. But hard things become easier with practice, something that my husband and I understand after years of athletics. Back when we were competing, my husband and I devoted extra time to our mental and physical well-being.

PARIS — Two days after Noah Lyles said he tested positive for Covid, the American sprinter finished third in the 200-meter final at the Paris Olympics, unable to chase down gold medalist Letsile Tebogo of Botswana. Lyles ran 19.70 for bronze, behind Tebogo's 19.46, which earned the first gold medal in Botswana's history. Following his positive test, Lyles said he moved into a hotel away from the Olympic Village to quarantine himself and arrived for warmups before Wednesday's semifinal with a mask on. He said he never considered not competing in Thursday's final and intentionally did not disclose information about his diagnosis. At the finish line Lyles collapsed, then gingerly stood while asking for water and sitting back down on the track.

Lithuanian discus thrower Mykolas Alekna is poised to carry on the legacy of his father, Virgilijus, who holds an Olympic record in the same discipline. His 69.89-meter throw in Athens 2004 guaranteed the then-32-year-old a second Olympic gold medal, having also won in Sydney 2000. The world record followed in April 2024, when all his six throws – alongside his new all-time mark – were over the elite 70-meter mark. Deep-rooted traditionAlekna’s success in the discus throw is testament to Lithuania’s deep-rooted tradition in this field event – the Baltic state has been hugely successful with the discus in hand. Virgilijus Alekna’s victories on the global stage helped to popularize the sport, and now, finals of discus throw are among the most-watched Olympic events in Lithuania.

Only five sports — aquatics, athletics, cycling, fencing and gymnastics — have appeared in each of the 30 iterations of the Olympic Games. Host countries, as a result, now have more leverage than ever in adding to the Olympic program. The LA 2028 OCOG proposed five new sports for the Olympic program that were approved by the IOC in late 2023. The next edition of the summer Games will feature flag football and squash for the first time in Olympic history. It will also bring back baseball/softball, cricket and lacrosse — which was dropped from the Olympic program following a brief two-year stint in the early 1900s.
