A new analysis identified several ways that the West can disrupt Russia's artillery supply chain. Analysts said the West needs to go after Russia's foreign imports before it's too late. Despite international sanctions meant to cripple Russia's war machine, Russia has maintained an edge over Ukraine when it comes to artillery production and rate of fire. AdvertisementThe analysts at RUSI said that the West needs to disrupt the industries that are keeping Russia's deadly and destructive howitzers firing before it's too late for Ukraine. However, the analysts said, "the longer the war continues, the more Russia's dependencies on foreign suppliers will become a weakness."

Military experts said it's partly down to Ukraine's long-range strikes on Russian ammo depots. AdvertisementUkraine is reducing Russia's artillery advantage on the battlefield, and recent attacks on ammo depots have likely sped that up. According to military experts, these developments are likely due in part to Ukraine's recent long-range strikes on Russian ammunition depots. Taking out the ammoUkraine damaged several rear Russian ammo depots using long-range weapons in a string of long-range strikes that began last month. But Kastehelmi said that in the long run, Russia will "most likely" be able to adapt to Ukraine's long-range strikes.

Russia is flooding Ukraine with men and equipment, but that should soon slow, analyst Michael Kofman said. Its high losses indicate its military is strained under its current level of aggression, he told the Intelligencer. AdvertisementRussia's numbers advantage against Ukraine is likely to start diminishing as soon as the end of this year, said US-based military analyst Michael Kofman. Russia's equipment can't last foreverKofman's first explanation is that Moscow has been replacing high equipment losses with Soviet-era weaponry, but even these reserve stocks can't last forever. "What it does mean is that the Russian military has increasingly been forced to adjust tactics to minimize their losses," he added.

No matter who voters choose, whether it is former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris , Liwag doesn't expect a meaningful shake-up in the outlook for defense stocks. Still, the analyst notes that even cases where an administration cuts defense spending, stocks can still carve out gains. During the Obama administration, the defense budget fell 3.3%, but defense stocks gained 2.1%. The defense stocks Morgan Stanley covers have outperformed the S & P 500 since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Liwag said. Creating a 'Hellscape'Drones could be deployed by China to swarm over Taiwan and guide high-precision missile strikes, experts told Business Insider. Numbers countBut countering China's drone capability is in part a numbers game, and this is where Taiwan and the US currently fall short. When combined with other Chinese drone companies, that share goes up to well above 80%, it said. AdvertisementThis method would be vital for tracking and disabling some of the smaller drones China might use in an attack on Taiwan, said Pettyjohn. The terror attack has helped push the Middle East to the brink of a wider regional war. One year after the massacre, the Middle East has only plunged deeper into violence and is on the brink of a broader war. Globally, the immediate concern is that oil supplies will diminish significantly should conflict spill over to the rest of the Middle East. Everyone but Biden can see this," wrote Andrew Exum, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defense for Middle East policy, in The Atlantic last week. The global economy on edgeWhen the conflict began a year ago, there were fears that wider conflict in the Middle East could impact the global economy.

Twice this year, US forces in the region have assisted Israel in intercepting an attack by Iran. Austin announced in early August that he was sending the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to the region; it arrived later that month. The strike group consists of thousands of sailors and Marines, spanning across three destroyers and a carrier air wing. The USS Spruance and USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., also both guided-missile destroyers that are part of the strike group, were operating in the Red Sea. In addition to the firepower brought by the Lincoln strike group, the Navy has a number of other destroyers and capabilities in the region.

A Ukrainian drone commander says his unit can use $100 million to carry out 5,000 lethal strikes, per The Atlantic. The big takeaway was that, on average, for each $20,000 spent on his unit, Ukraine could score one kill on Russian forces. According to The Atlantic's writers, the commander's slides said that a drone unit funded with $100 million could stay on the battlefield for a full year, carrying out 5,000 lethal strikes. KYIV, Ukraine — Russian troops on Wednesday took charge of the eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, a bastion that had resisted intense attacks since Russia launched its full-scale assault in 2022. Russian Telegram channels, however, published video of troops waving the Russian tricolor flag over shattered buildings. Russia has been using pincer tactics to trap and then constrict Ukrainian strongholds. Russian bloggers said Russia could now try to push towards Velyka Novosilka, just over 20 miles to the west. Russian forces currently control 98.5% of the Luhansk region and 60% of the Donetsk region.

CNN —Russia has captured the key eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, ending months of resistance and underscoring the scale of Kyiv’s challenge as it heads into its third wartime winter. While not a transport and logistics hub like Pokrovsk, Vuhledar was heavily fortified and viewed as a crucial bastion at the intersection of Ukraine’s eastern and southern fronts. Just like Avdiivka, another strategic eastern town which fell in February, Vuhledar is a victim, not of Russian strategic prowess, but brute force attrition. For two years Ukraine had put up a formidable defense there, as Russia tried and failed several times to take the town. “It’s painful, Vuhledar or rather those who settled there, drank a lot of blood,” he said.

Israel launched a ground incursion that risks repeating its past mistakes in Lebanon. From 1985 to 2000, Israel occupied a 15-mile-wide "security zone" in southern Lebanon, ostensibly run by a Lebanese Christian faction backed by IDF troops. Israel returned in 2006, when 30,000 Israeli troops crossed the border in retaliation for a Hezbollah ambush of IDF troops in northern Israel. Here’s a look at Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities and the defensive systems employed by Israeli and other forces in the region. The Shahab-3 is the foundation for all Iran’s medium-range ballistic missiles using a liquid propellant, according to Patrick Senft, a research coordinator at Armament Research Services (ARES). But analysts point out that almost all ballistic missiles reach hypersonic speed during their flights, especially as they dive towards their targets. Some 180 ballistic missiles had been launched from Iran against Israel and intercepted in the sky across Israel on October 1, 2024. Meanwhile, the Arrow 3 uses hit-to-kill technology to intercept incoming ballistic missiles in space, before they reenter the atmosphere on their way to targets.

Historically sensitive to geopolitical tremors, oil prices have resisted long-term spikes, reined in by the specter of waning global demand and potential supply increases. The Israeli military says it has begun a "limited, localized" operation against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. It said it was carrying out "targeted ground raids" in villages close to the Israeli border. The targets, it said, pose an "immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel." The Israeli military launched small ground raids against Hezbollah and sealed off communities along its northern border on Monday as Israeli artillery pounded southern Lebanon and signals grew that more forces could soon be sent across the border to fight the Iran-backed militants. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Israel informed the U.S. about the raids, which he said were described as "limited operations focused on Hezbollah infrastructure near the border."
