The head of Avdiivka's military administration, Vitaliy Barabash, said fighting was gripping an industrial district and Ukrainian forces were holding their positions. The Russian defence ministry's latest update mentioned that its troops were attacking villages south of Avdiivka, but gave few details. In the south, Russian forces also made missile strikes on port infrastructure in the Black Sea city of Odesa, regional officials said. Pro-Russian bloggers said Russian forces had been harrying Ukrainian forces near the village of Krynky, near marshes on the eastern bank upriver from the city of Kherson.

Ukraine's winter goal is disrupting Russia's logistics, a military spokesperson said. The aim is to make Russian forces "hungry, cold, and have no desire to fight." AdvertisementThe main goal for Ukraine's military over the winter months will be disrupting Russia's military logistics so much that its troops are left with no will to fight. He said Ukraine's "main task" over the winter will be to disrupt Russia's logistics "so that they are hungry, cold, and have no desire to fight." Russia's troops can be stuck "outside, getting wet and cold" and targeted strikes by Ukriane could degrade Russian logistics, Watling said.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense is considering dismissing three commanders of the armed forces, Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources in Ukraine’s military and political leadership. According to the sources, Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov is preparing to dismiss Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, who is in charge of one of the fronts of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, and Serhii Naiev, commander of Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, along with another army chief. Ukraine's presidential office did not confirm or deny the report to the outlet. If the dismissals do take place, they are likely to partly reflect criticism of Ukraine's counteroffensive, which has seen few gains since it was launched in June.

But in mid-October, some Russian military bloggers reported that Ukrainian forces had formed a small bridgehead on the eastern bank. Shortly after, Ukrainian soldiers breached the first line of defences south of the town of Velyka Novosilka in the first known breakthrough of the counteroffensive. Military analysts and authorities in Kyiv said Ukraine had badly damaged a large landing ship and an attack submarine. Just over a week later, a Ukrainian missile attack hit Russia's Black Sea naval headquarters in Sevastopol. Valery Zaluzhnyi, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, at an event commemorating Ukraine's Independence Day, on Aug. 24, 2023, in Kyiv, Ukraine. Ukraine's commander-in-chief has conceded that there have been few gains in Ukraine's five-month long counteroffensive to retake Russian-occupied territory. Likening the current state of conflict to World War I, in which battles were often fought over a few miles of territory at the expense of huge numbers of men, Ukraine's General Valery Zaluzhny said the war had reached an impasse. "There will most likely be no deep and beautiful breakthrough," he told The Economist magazine in an interview published Thursday. Ukraine has repeatedly said it needs longer-range weapons, more air defenses and its own airpower to be able to fight Russia effectively.
