The S & P 500 broke past 5,000 for the first time ever this week, but investors will see if the momentum can stick in the week ahead with more inflation data and earnings results on deck. On Friday, both the S & P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were headed for their fifth straight week of gains, and their 14th winning week in 15. FactSet data shows S & P 500 earnings are tracking to have risen 2.8% in the fourth quarter, which would be a second straight quarter of earnings growth, and some expect that positive momentum will remain intact in the weeks ahead. A cooler-than-expected print has the potential to be greeted with enthusiasm, sending the S & P 500 even higher. The S & P 500 is up by 5% this year, with Nvidia higher by more than 40%.

These stocks riding the surge of interest in artificial intelligence are the most crowded trades, Goldman Sachs warned. The top five most crowded trades include Autodesk, a design software company; Arista Networks, a network equipment company; and Advanced Micro Devices, a chipmaker. Autodesk is considered the most crowded trade, according to Goldman Sachs. But Goldman Sachs does not anticipate much runway left for the stock, just 3% upside to its price target. The stock is up 23% in 2024, but can fall 27% based on Goldman Sachs' price target.

Edge AI, or AI at the edge, refers to the utilization of AI in edge computing, and its growth should have an immense effect on the technology world over the next few years. Given this outlook, Abrams named some of the top companies across technology sectors situated to benefit from AI at the edge. UBS projects more upside ahead, viewing both stocks among the top semiconductors as best situated to benefit from Edge AI. Memory chipmakers also look poised to benefit from Edge AI as devices on the edge require more computing power. But the company has been on the uptrend as demand rebounds, AI server demand booms and commercial customers begin deploying AI PCs later this year and into 2025.

After 2023's blowout run, it's hard to recall the once gloomy investing setup for technology stocks last December. As the calendar year turns, don't expect technology stocks to match 2023's blowout gains, but the year's performance is no fluke. AI stocks may dominate tech-focused investing, but don't sleep on the other emerging themes. A few days ago, S & P noted that the S & P 500 total return of 25.85% would only be up 9.49% ex the Magnificent 7. If you own the S & P 500 long-term, you are participating in those gains.
