Apple CEO Tim Cook inspects the new iPhone 16 during an Apple special event at Apple headquarters on September 09, 2024 in Cupertino, California. "That should be expected, as Apple Intelligence features (the only reason to upgrade)have yet to be rolled out in a significant way." U.S. carriers, including AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, have also seemed unexcited about an Apple Intelligence upgrade cycle. But research firm Counterpoint Research told CNBC in October that iPhone sales, especially for the lower-priced devices, were strong in China. While the hardware sales are certainly profitable, they pale in comparison to the profitability of Apple's Services. It's impossible to do consistently, and that's why Jim Cramer always says "own, don't trade" Apple stock. During the reported quarter, Apple returned over $29 billion to shareholders, including $3.8 billion in dividends and equivalents and another $25 billion via the repurchase of 112 million shares. Though Services sales missed the mark, gross income managed to outpace expectations thanks to significant year-over-year margin expansion. The growing installed base of active devices is of course translating into strong engagement with Apple's services.

Apple on Wednesday introduced new MacBook Pro laptops with updated processors, in what is likely the company's last major hardware announcement of the year. Apple says the new chips are 1.8 times faster than the M1, which powered Apple's 2021 MacBook Pro. Additionally, all of the new MacBook Pro models come with at least 16GB of RAM. The more memory a computer has, the more it is capable of handling larger and more sophisticated AI models. Doubling the RAM on its laptops represents the most significant change Apple has made to its lineup of computers to better support Apple Intelligence.

Apple announced on Tuesday new Mac Mini models, featuring the first major redesign since 2010 that makes the desktop computer significantly smaller. The Mac Mini is Apple's least-expensive Mac, starting at $599, and does not include a display, which is sold separately. The Mac Mini is not one of Apple's highest-volume computers in terms of sales, but it is an important slot in Apple's lineup, especially for people who make apps for iPhones and other Apple platforms. Many iPhone developers like to run a Mac Mini as a personal development server for coordinating uploads and code. One improvement in the new design is that all of the ports are USB-C ports, the same more modern offering found on Apple's laptops.

"Founder mode" is not about "swagger," says one of the founders who popularized it. Here's what he says most people get wrong about "founder mode" and how he actually defines it. AdvertisementBrian Chesky helped popularize the term "founder mode," but he says some people have gotten it twisted. The term "founder mode" was popularized in September by Y Combinator founding partner Paul Graham, who wrote that Chesky inspired it. "First of all, people don't know what founder mode is," Chesky said on the podcast.
