REUTERS/Anushree Fadnavis/File PhotoNEW DELHI, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Deloitte has decided to resign as auditor of India's Adani Ports (APSE.NS) amid concerns over certain transactions flagged in a report by Hindenburg, which the company did not wish to independently look into, a source with direct knowledge said. Deloitte in May had pointed to certain transactions flagged by the U.S. short-seller in its report and gave only a qualified opinion, which indicates concerns by a company's auditor. Deloitte's resignation comes after it asked Adani Ports to conduct an independent inquiry on related party transactions flagged by Hindenburg, to which the company did not agree, the source said. Deloitte and Adani Ports did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comments. Deloitte's decision to quit as Adani Ports' auditor might come as soon as Monday, the source added.

After the Supreme Court's ruling, the lower house of parliament should now formally reinstate Gandhi. Lower courts and the high court in Gujarat, where the BJP holds power, had rejected appeals by Gandhi to suspend the conviction, prompting the appeal to the Supreme Court. Besides seeking suspension of the conviction, Gandhi has also sought to overturn it. That challenge has yet to be heard by the lower court in Gujarat. Gavai said the lower court had not given any reasons for handing down the maximum sentence of two years' jail which led to his disqualification from parliament.

India says the new law is a milestone in "enhancement of the productivity of forests". Both parliament houses cleared the law in recent days and it will next go to the president for approval. India's environment ministry, which has drafted the changes, did not respond to Reuters queries. Opponents say India's new law will also change how it defines forests, and so it will apply to fewer green zones, leading to about 20-28% of existing forest cover losing regulatory protection. Such changes, critics say, could lead to excessive construction in the pristine tourist hotspot of Kashmir and other hilly forests in Himalayan states.

The two companies are targeting an initial investment of $150 million each in the joint venture, Jio Financial said in a statement on Wednesday. India's asset management industry has seen rapid growth in recent years and has 44.3 trillion Indian rupees ($540.4 billion) in assets under management. The joint venture will launch a "digital-first" offering following regulatory approvals, said the statement, without giving a timeline within which it plans to begin operations.

The small West African country has hired a U.S. law firm to explore legal action, the justice minister previously told Reuters. The Indian drugmaker Maiden Pharmaceuticals has denied wrongdoing, and the Indian government says that tests it conducted on the drugs showed they were not contaminated. July 6 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs said rising usage of electric vehicles (EV) was a "key pillar of copper's bullish story", forecasting copper demand from the sector to amount to 1 million tonnes (mt) this year, rising to 1.5 mt in 2025. Last year, EV production accounted for about two-thirds of the increase in global copper demand, with EVs likely accounting for about 27% of additional copper consumption over the next decade, the bank said. Goldman said its analysts were optimistic about EVs, anticipating "strong sales in China, driven by lower prices and a high demand for EVs that has been building up over the rest of 2023." Benchmark copper prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) lost 7.5% in the second quarter of 2023 due to a slow recovery in demand in China and concerns over global economic growth. However, copper usage in EVs could fall in the longer term, with the amount of copper used per EV likely falling to 65 kg per unit by 2030, compared with 73 kg in 2022, the bank said.

Despite hitting an 18-month low of 4.70% in April, analysts do not expect India's inflation to fall to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) 4% medium-term target in a sustainable manner for some time. India has raised rates by 250 basis points (bps) since May 2022, but surprised analysts in April by keeping them unchanged. India's hold on rates contrasts with recent central bank actions elsewhere. "Our goal is to achieve the inflation target of 4% and keeping inflation within the comfort band of 2-6% is not enough," Das said. Das said that the central bank would remain "nimble" with its liquidity operations amid spikes in overnight rates despite surplus liquidity in the banking system.
