Bob Barker, the consistently good-natured host of “The Price Is Right,” the longest-running game show in American television history, and one of the country’s best-known advocates for animal rights, died on Saturday at his home in the Hollywood Hills section of Los Angeles. His death was announced by a spokesman, Roger Neal. Mr. Barker was a fixture of daytime television for half a century — first as the host of “Truth or Consequences,” from 1956 to 1974, and, most famously, starting in 1972, on “The Price Is Right.”He began his 35-year stint as host of “The New Price Is Right,” as it was then known, when it made its debut on CBS as a revised and jazzed-up version of the original “The Price Is Right,” which had been on the air from 1956 to 1965. (The “New” was soon dropped from the name.) He was also host of a weekly syndicated nighttime version from 1977 until it was canceled in 1980.

We used to raise hogs on our family farm here, and to be honest I didn’t much like them. Defenders of farm animals sometimes compare pigs to dogs, but our hogs didn’t display any canine-style affection and instead were grouchy, whiny, strong-willed and prone to wander. Still, our pigs were indisputably very smart with distinctive personalities, and sows made terrific moms (helicopter moms, too, keeping a close eye on wayward piglets). In short, I wouldn’t compare pigs to golden retrievers — they’re much more like people. We no longer raise pigs on our farm, nor do most other small family farms.

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) postponed Thursday’s schedule at Belmont Park and said racing would only be authorised if conditions improved. Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian singer, songwriter and entertainer whose off-hand, English-language cameo on "The Girl from Ipanema" made her a worldwide voice of bossa nova, has died at age 83. "The Girl from Ipanema," the wistful ballad written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, was already a hit in South America. In a 2002 interview with friends posted on her web site, Astrud Gilberto remembered her husband saying he had a surprise for her at the recording studio. "When we were finished performing the song, Joao turned to Stan, and said something like: 'Tomorrow Astrud sing on record… What do you think?' Astrud Gilberto sings "The Girl from Ipanema" in a light, affectless style that influenced Sade and Suzanne Vega among others, as if she had already moved on to other matters.

June 4 (Reuters) - More than 30 people detained in connection with plans to disrupt Britain's Epsom Derby horse race have been released on bail, police said on Sunday. Police arrested 31 people on Saturday, including a protester who was detained after entering the racecourse. Auguste Rodin, ridden by Ryan Moore, won the 244th Epsom Derby. Last year's Epsom Derby was delayed after six protesters from Animal Rising, then named Animal Rebellion, entered the course and had to be removed by the police. April's Grand National was delayed by animal rights protesters, while more than 20 people were arrested at the Scottish Grand National.
