A billboard for the Netflix film "Thar" is seen on a street in Mumbai, India, May 19, 2022. "Every broadcaster or broadcasting network operator must establish a Content Evaluation Committee (CEC) with members from various social groups," stated the draft law document, which is open for public consultation for 30 days. The proposal however comes at a time of increasing scrutiny of streaming companies in India over content-related issues. Under the new proposed law, the federal government "can define the CEC's size, quorum, and operational details" and only those shows shall be broadcast that are "duly certified" by such a committee, the draft law stated. The law will also provide powers to the government to regulate any online creator or news media platform, Gupta added.

Biden’s economic scorecard touts fragile advantage

And if the political strategist James Carville was right that “it’s the economy, stupid,” the next several months could make or break Joe Biden’s economic record. As things stand, the current ruler of the free world touts a fragile advantage. Households’ disposable income after adjusting for inflation hit a record $20 trillion in the month that Biden’s measure was approved, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. STUDENT LOANSForgiving swaths of student debt was another of Biden’s campaign promises, but his efforts have so far failed. And with higher interest rates making debt service more expensive, Biden’s spending could come back to bite him on election day.

Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy by Take-Two Interactive Software Inc is seen for sale in a store in Manhattan, New York City, U.S., February 7, 2022. Take-Two, slated to report earnings later in the day, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The game's predecessor, "GTA V", has garnered around $7.68 billion in sales since its launch in 2013 and ranks among one of the most profitable titles ever. Take-Two was on track to add nearly $2 billion to its market value, based on the premarket share price of $148.6. The stock has risen by nearly a third this year, partly due to growing expectations of a reveal for the "GTA VI".

India is considering a policy to mandate equipping smartphones with hardware to receive live TV signals without the need for cellular networks. It has proposed use of so-called ATSC 3.0 technology popular in North America that allows precise geo-locating of TV signals and provides high picture quality. The policy pushback is the latest from firms operating in India's smartphone sector. For India's government, the live TV broadcast features are a way to offload the congestion on telecom networks due to higher video consumption. Samsung tops India's smartphone market with a 17.2% share, while Xiaomi follows with a 16.6% share, according to research firm Counterpoint.

SEC may have to let crypto foxes into the henhouse
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has cracked down on crypto exchanges without defining most tokens, stoking criticism that it has fostered a regulatory grey area and depressed prices. But now the agency is struggling to hire the experts it needs to keep policing the sector, partly because crypto lovers don’t want to sell their coins at depressed prices. Hiring such specialists is “critical” to probing new problems in crypto markets, the inspector general wrote. Yet supporters of bitcoin and the like have long criticized the SEC for regulating through enforcement instead of setting clear guidelines. For the SEC to do its job as best it can, it might need to replace its bad-cop routine with some good-cop action.

Under Starbucks’ new wage plan announced Monday morning, only baristas with more than five years of experience will win 5% raises. All other employees will come in below the 4.1% jump in average hourly pay over the last 12 months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Part-time workers at United Parcel Service (UPS.N) won a 48% average pay hike over five years, akin to a 10% annual increase. While U.S. baristas continue to organize, contracts approved at two Canadian Starbucks stores suggests employees’ bargaining power is fizzling.

Apple ticks lower after warning of dull holiday quarter

Nov 3 (Reuters) - Apple shares on Friday pared losses that were driven by its forecast for a subdued holiday quarter after a U.S. jobs report bolstered hopes of a pause in interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. The iPhone maker on Thursday forecast sales for the holiday quarter, usually its biggest, below Wall Street estimates, blaming weak demand for iPads and wearables. An Apple iPhone 12 is pictured in a mobile phone store in Nantes, France, Sept. 13, 2023. "We view management's flat sales guidance as proof the company cannot rely on iPhone sales to drive shares higher, as it has in the past," D.A. Apple tumbles after warning of dull holiday quarter

Nov 3 (Reuters) - Apple fell 3% on Friday after it disappointed Wall Street with a forecast that indicated growth will stay subdued in the quarter where the holiday season usually drives its strongest sales. The iPhone maker on Thursday predicted quarterly sales that were below market estimates, blaming weak demand for iPads and wearables, especially in key market China. "We view management's flat sales guidance as proof the company cannot rely on iPhone sales to drive shares higher, as it has in the past," D.A. "In mainland China, we set a quarterly record for the September quarter for iPhone," Cook told Reuters. He was also positive on the outlook for the services business, whose strong growth in the September quarter had helped the company top quarterly revenue expectations.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Pfizer can recover from its post-Covid fatigue

Pfizer reported plummeting demand for its Covid vaccines and treatments, with an overall revenue decline of over 40% compared to last year, and a $2.4 billion loss that included a $5.6 billion charge for Covid inventory write-offs. Pfizer now thinks 2023 revenue from shots and pills for the disease will total about $12.5 billion, over a 75% decrease from last year. Peers trade at around 5 times sales, and if Pfizer did too its enterprise value would be about $235 billion. McDonald’s menu stocks up on global variations

TORONTO, Oct 30 (Reuters Breakingviews) - McDonald’s (MCD.N) status as the world’s go-to meal means it’s competing with an uneven global economy as much as any rivals. The ubiquitous $190 billion fast-food purveyor on Monday touted a 9% year-over-year increase in worldwide same-store sales for the third quarter. In places like the U.S., that was helped by menu price increases. But the Big Mac seller also talked up the release of smaller, more affordable meals in markets facing worse economic fortunes, like China and Germany. In the latter, its McSmart menu of smaller meals helped drive the 10th quarter of double-digit sales growth.

“I have been consistently surprised at the resilience of consumer spending,” Christopher Waller, an influential member of the Fed’s board, said in a speech this month. “The acceleration of consumer spending on experiences (has) propelled us towards another outstanding quarter,” said CEO Jason Liberty. Wealthier households, in particular, have enjoyed substantial growth in home values and stock portfolios, which are likely juicing their spending. Spending on the bank's credit and debit cards by households with incomes below $50,000 has risen faster than spending by higher-earning clients. “Consumer spending across all segments from high to low has remained stable since March."

In the July-September period, Amazon posted its first quarter-on-quarter increase in cloud growth in nearly two years. This holiday season, shoppers who ring up purchases on credit cards will pay more interest if they carry balances from month to month after the Federal Reserve's string of rate hikes. Already, investors and retailers have paid closer attention to credit card payments — and some have cited them as a concern. The company, which has its own branded credit cards, has seen lower revenues from those cards because of costs associated with bad debt and related write-offs. Mitchell said student debt, auto loans and mortgages have all become bigger burdens in a high interest rate environment. For retailer-issued cards, the average interest rate is nearly 30%, a record high, according to data from Bankrate.
