"Consumer spending was remarkably resilient throughout 2023 and finished the year with a solid pace for the holiday season," he said in a news release. Online sales and other nonstore sales rose 8.2% year over year. Average sales growth during the holiday season was 3.6% from 2010 to 2019, according to NRF data.

For its holiday quarter, American Eagle expects sales to be up high-single digits, ahead of the 3.4% sales growth analysts had expected, according to LSEG. However, it's expecting its operating income to be between $105 million and $115 million, which is mostly below expectations of $114 million, according to StreetAccount. For the full year, American Eagle is projecting revenue to be up mid-single digits, compared to previous guidance of up low single digits.
