“There’s only one explanation for this staggering difference in maternal mortality,” said Nancy L. Cohen, president of the GEPI. “All the research points to Texas’ abortion ban as the primary driver of this alarming increase.”“Texas, I fear, is a harbinger of what’s to come in other states,” she said. Among Hispanic women, the rate of women dying while pregnant, during childbirth or soon after increased from 14.5% in 2019 to 18.9% in 2022. While maternal mortality spiked overall during the pandemic, women dying while pregnant or during childbirth rose consistently in Texas following the state’s ban on abortion, according to the Gender Equity Policy Institute. The program had marked a shift in Denver’s strategy of housing migrants in massive temporary shelters to providing individual resources. About 860 people are currently part of the program, which offers six months of housing, job training, language instruction and legal support in filing asylum claims, according to city officials. Abbott Laboratories announced Thursday its over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor Lingo is available in the U.S. starting at $49. These devices, called continuous glucose monitors, are small sensors that stick through the skin to measure real-time glucose levels. Continuous glucose monitors have served as tools for patients with diabetes, but Lingo is not intended for diabetes management. The company released its over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor geared toward this demographic in late August. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Dexcom's Stelo in March, and it cleared two over-the-counter continuous glucose monitoring systems from Abbott in June.

CNN —Esteban Wood still remembers the time a 74-year-old Mexican farmer in Homestead, Florida, collapsed on the job from extreme heat. Such outdoor workers include lifeguards, transportation employees, ironworkers, agricultural workers and letter carriers. States like California, Colorado, Minnesota and Washington, have some heat protections for workers but they are not uniform or sweeping. For example, Minnesota’s protections only apply to indoor workers while California’s heat protections include both indoor and outdoor workers. The government must implement wage protections alongside heat protections, said Dr. Kristina Dahl, a principal climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

London CNN —Far-right riots swept Britain over the weekend, with outbreaks of anti-immigrant violence in a number of cities and towns, leaving the new UK government scrambling to control the worst disorder in more than a decade. Throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday, violent protesters congregated in city and town centers across the UK, many of them apparently intent on clashing with police and causing havoc. The gatherings ostensibly started as anti-immigration marches, organized on social media platforms like X and on WhatsApp and Telegram groups. Violence also took place in Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Stoke-on-Trent and several more cities, mostly across the Midlands and north of England. The man in charge of bringing those offenders to justice was Keir Starmer, then Britain’s Director of Public Prosecutions.
