No Labels will not field third-party ticket
  + stars: | 2024-04-04 | by ( Aaron Pellish | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —The centrist group No Labels is abandoning plans to form a third-party presidential unity ticket for this year’s election. “But No Labels has always said we would only offer our ballot line to a ticket if we could identify candidates with a credible path to winning the White House. The Wall Street Journal was first to report on the No Labels decision not to field a presidential ticket. In its quest for a unity ticket, the group had been rebuffed by several high-profile figures, including former New Jersey Gov. The group had previously set a March deadline to decide on whether to field such a ticket.

“We must free Assange now!” the text in both fundraising messages reads. Kennedy campaign spokesperson Stefanie Spear told CNN that the language used in the fundraising emails was “an error” and that the campaign has terminated its contract with the vendor responsible. It was inserted by a new marketing contractor and slipped through the normal approval process,” Spear said in a statement. “(Trump) overthrowing — trying to overthrow the election clearly is threat to democracy,” Kennedy said on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront” on Monday. Trump has said he would pardon a “large portion” of January 6 rioters if he’s reelected.

That could benefit third-party or independent presidential candidates in a state that Joe Biden narrowly carried over Donald Trump in 2020. A super PAC backing independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in February that it had gathered enough signatures in Georgia for Kennedy to make the ballot. Currently, independent or third-party candidates must collect at least 7,500 signatures from registered Georgia voters to qualify for the ballot in the state. A separate provision of the election legislation would broaden what constitutes “probable cause” needed to uphold challenges to voter registrations. Voting rights groups have objected to several provisions in the legislation, including the rules regarding voter challenges.

The event marks a critical moment for Kennedy’s White House bid that could accelerate his efforts to gain ballot access in all 50 states. His vice presidential pick will also be tasked with broadening Kennedy’s appeal and helping raise money for his big-spending campaign. Kennedy campaign ballot access attorney Paul Rossi suggested Nevada Democrats were attempting to block Kennedy from gaining ballot access in the state – a claim the secretary of state’s office rejected. “Vice presidential candidates don’t tend to push elections very far, even for the major-party candidates. “I would never choose a vice presidential candidate based on how much money they have,” Kennedy said in a NewsNation interview last week.

CNN —Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. named Silicon Valley attorney and entrepreneur Nicole Shanahan as his vice presidential pick at a campaign rally Tuesday in her hometown of Oakland, California. Kennedy’s campaign is hoping Shanahan’s youth and fluency in the tech world’s anti-establishment rhetoric will help him expand and excite his base of support. “I had a very hard childhood with a lot of sadness, fear and instability,” Shanahan told People. The spot repurposed video from the 1960 presidential campaign of Kennedy’s uncle, John F. Kennedy, and drew criticism from several Kennedy family members. CNN —Ohio’s Republican Senate primary on Tuesday – this year’s first test of Donald Trump’s clout in a contested Senate race – will help determine a key question this fall: What is the fate of Sen. Sherrod Brown and the Democratic majority? Despite already having clinched the GOP presidential nomination last week, Trump has a lot on the line in Ohio on Tuesday. “Trump endorsed Bernie Moreno for Senate.”But Democrats are also trying to use the former president’s popularity in this red state to their advantage. At over $40 million as of Monday, Ohio’s Senate race trails only the US presidential race, the 2023 Kentucky governor’s race and the 2024 California Senate race in total ad spending so far. “The person who clearly has the best shot of winning in the fall is Matt Dolan – I think our common sense tells us that.”But the governor’s backing could cut both ways for Dolan, Ohio Republican strategists told CNN.

CNN —The Democratic National Committee has accused the super PAC backing Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign of committing additional campaign finance violations on Monday, a further escalation of Democrats’ efforts to diminish Kennedy’s independent White House bid. The super PAC announced last week that it had gathered enough signatures to qualify Kennedy for appearance on the November ballot in Arizona and Georgia. “It’s clear that they, along with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his campaign, don’t believe that the rules apply to them.”CNN has reached out to American Values 2024, de Becker and the Kennedy campaign for comment. Democrats have paid for billboards outside multiple Kennedy campaign events in recent weeks boosting Mellon’s support for Kennedy. In addition to donating in support of Kennedy, de Becker’s company has provided security for Kennedy during his presidential run.

Kennedy has stated that his goal is to appear on the ballot in all 50 states and DC,” the DNC wrote. But the complaint argues that coordination is required for the ballot access efforts by American Values and Team Kennedy, and thereby the group’s support runs afoul of campaign finance laws. Kennedy campaign manager Amaryllis Fox Kennedy denied coordinating with the outside group in a statement to CNN. The conference comes at a pivotal moment for San Francisco, which has struggled to rebound from the pandemic closures that scrambled downtowns across the country. Local leaders hope the APEC conference will be just the catalyst that San Francisco needs to shake off its pandemic doldrums. At the very least, the past few weeks have shown that the city can clean up well. “This is a huge opportunity, and we’ve been planning this down to the gnat’s eyebrow,” said Aaron Peskin, the president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
