CNN —A missile fired from Lebanon was intercepted near Israel’s economic center Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Israel’s military said, in a rare attack far from the front lines of the conflict with Hezbollah. “Following the sirens that sounded in the Tel Aviv and Netanya areas, one surface-to-surface missile was identified crossing from Lebanon and was intercepted by the IDF Aerial Defense Array,” the Israeli military said. The UK announced on Tuesday that it was sending 700 troops to Cyprus to prepare for a possible emergency evacuation of British citizens from Lebanon if one becomes necessary. The US State Department has also repeatedly warned US citizens to leave Lebanon while commercial travel options are still available. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday that the US is “working tirelessly” on diplomatic efforts to prevent an “full-blown war” between Israel and Lebanon. A US official told CNN on Monday that “we are the closest we’ve been to spiraling to a regional war” since Hamas’ October 7 attack. Tehran has not intervened yet, but they will if they believe they are about to lose their most powerful proxy force, Hezbollah, the official added.

That may be enough to overwhelm Israel's Iron Dome air defense system and inflict huge damage on the country's cities and infrastructure, experts say. Two unnamed US officials told the publication that Israel believes the Iron Dome could be vulnerable, particularly in the north. The Iron Dome is one of the most advanced defense systems in operation today. Each battery consists of three to four launchers carrying dozens of Tamir interceptor missiles and a sensitive radar, US military Iron Dome contractor Raytheon Technologies said. The Israeli military on Monday warned civilians in southern Lebanon to move away from Hezbollah positions as it intensified attacks on its neighbor. "Shortly, the IDF will engage in extensive, precise strikes, against terror targets which have been embedded widely throughout Lebanon," Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said early Monday in a statement. The warning is the first of its kind issued by the IDF in Lebanon, an Israeli military official told NBC News, adding the present campaign only involves aerial strikes. Israel, the official said, wants to create safe conditions for its own citizens to return to the northern part of the country, and destroy Hezbollah's infrastructure in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military is also looking into reports that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, was killed in a recent Israeli airstrike, an Israeli official told NBC News.
