REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBERLIN, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) said on Monday that it is in advanced talks with India's Mahindra & Mahindra (MAHM.NS) on the use of key electric components of the German carmaker's open platform for electric vehicles, called MEB. Mahindra wants to use central MEB components such as the e-drive and unit cells for its models, said Volkswagen in a statement. Volkswagen has developed a modular, open vehicle platform for EVs, called MEB, which is used to build to its own cars and those of other group companies including Skoda and Audi. In August, Volkswagen and Mahindra signed a term sheet under which the German carmaker would supply electric components to its Indian peer.

How Kia pulled off a massive turnaround in the U.S.
  + stars: | 2023-08-31 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
When the automaker arrived in the U.S. in 1994, its cars were poorly reviewed, and it was seen mostly as a low-cost value brand. Now, Kia is winning awards and commanding higher markups than its peers. U.S. sales have gone from about 12,000 units in 1994 to almost 700,000 units in 2022. "We had a record in 2022," said Steve Center, chief operating officer of Kia America, adding that the first half of 2023 brought another sales record. But Kia believes it can take on electric as well as it took on internal combustion.

About half of Nvidia's data center revenue comes from cloud providers, followed by big internet companies. The growth in Nvidia's data center business was in "compute," or AI chips, which grew 195% during the quarter, more than the overall business's growth of 171%. Some startups have even gone into debt to buy Nvidia GPUs in hopes of renting them out for a profit in the coming months. On an earnings call with analysts, Nvidia officials gave some perspective about why its data center chips are so profitable. Nvidia's AI software, called Cuda, is cited by analysts as the primary reason why customers can't easily switch to competitors like AMD .

Growing up, the conductor Maxime Pascal was a self-identified musical dilettante. As a child in the south of France, he had some skill on the violin, and sat in on the piano lessons his mother taught. Now, though, Pascal, 37, is arguably his generation’s finest conductor of 20th-century music, as well as an essential interpreter of contemporary works. And his schedule reflects both the breadth of his ambition and the respect he has garnered on some of the industry’s most prestigious stages. Global automakers, who for years have dominated the market along with their Chinese state-run partners, have been slow to pivot to the fast-growing market for EVs with competitive offerings. "This major collaboration between Volkswagen and Xpeng is a milestone for our electrification strategy 'in China for China'," said Ralf Brandstatter, a VW board member on his social media account. Their deeper pockets give established foreign automakers who are determined to fight for share in China, the ability to play a long game. Kia (000270.KS) is to enter China's EV market with its first EV, the EV6 crossover, via imports in August. But overall revenue increased 18.2 percent as the company stemmed some of its losses in China, where deliveries were down 1.2 percent. Western Europe provided the company with its strongest business, with 1.65 million vehicles ordered in the first half of the year, and 200,000 of them — or 12 percent — were electric vehicles, the company said. Volkswagen hopes that its investment in XPeng will help advance the German automaker’s electric vehicle software to the standards produced by Chinese manufacturers. Some analysts interpreted the move as a concession that Volkswagen was unable to compete with Chinese companies on the latest technology. In the first quarter of 2023, BYD, the Chinese EV maker backed by Warren Buffett, surpassed Volkswagen to become the largest brand by sales in China, according to official car insurance registration data. Elizabeth Warren asks SEC to investigate Tesla

New York CNN —Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren asked the SEC to investigate Tesla and its board of directors to determine whether they violated securities laws after CEO Elon Musk took over Twitter last year. Warren wrote that that disorder has spilled over into Musk’s management of one of the most influential electric car companies in the United States. “Tesla is publicly owned, and Mr. Musk and the Board have responsibilities to shareholders and the public in their management of the company,” Warren wrote. “These close relationships may explain the board’s persistent inability or unwillingness to address the concerns posed by Mr. Musk’s actions,” Warren wrote. Last December, the Democratic senator wrote Tesla shareholders may be hurt by its CEO’s ownership of Twitter in a letter to company chair Robyn Denholm.

That's approximately how large China's "premium" consumer population is – and it's a "huge" opportunity for higher-end sportswear by foreign companies, according to Bernstein. By U.S. standards, it doesn't take much to be considered premium in China. Adidas and Nike are like Benz, BMW, the highest end, he said, while the other brands are like Audi or Toyota. For Nike and Adidas, even their lowest price is two times that of local competitors, the Bernstein analysts said. However, focusing only on the premium growth segment can overlook the fact that many of China's consumers still live in smaller cities.

Broadcom sent Harman a letter in May saying that all chips Broadcom supplied to Harman must be used exclusively for BMW components. The lawsuit accused Broadcom of approaching two Harman customers BMW and GM, "likely deliberately squeezing supply to win concessions from both." Broadcom and BMW then formed an exclusive chip partnership, which cut out Harman from the supply chain, according to the suit. After discussions with Broadcom, Harman wrote to Broadcom saying that it did not agree to this. Broadcom and BMW also entered an agreement where Broadcom would sell chips to BMW directly while only allowing Harman to have chips incorporated into BMW products.

SHENZHEN, China, July 13 (Reuters) - Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies(HWT.UL) received $560 million in royalty revenues in 2022, Alan Fan, its head of intellectual property (IP), said on Thursday in a speech at company headquarters in the city of Shenzhen. Huawei earned more than it paid out in royalties over the last two years as the decline in handset sales meant it needed to pay less to other IP holders, Fan said. The company has entered into patent licenses with phone makers Samsung and Oppo and automakers including Audi, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, Subaru, Lamborghini and Bentley, Huawei said. Last year, Huawei spent $23 billion on research and development, with 114,000 staff, 55% of its total, working on research, the company said. From 2019, rounds of U.S restrictions after authorities there called the company a security risk reduced its access to chipmaking tools.

Its draw is also in the departures from tradition. Without them, Aix would be another Salzburg instead of the most interesting opera festival in Europe — though at this point in Pierre Audi’s tenure as artistic director, “opera” is too limiting a label, with a slate over the past week of film, music theater, concerts and, yes, opera, including two new works, each of vastly different character. Many summer festivals exist primarily for the pleasure of music-making beyond the usual concert halls and theaters. In this edition, not everything succeeded artistically (or with audiences); some of what I saw was reckless, some of it offensive. In the pit, so to speak, was the Orchestre de Paris under the baton of its music director, Klaus Mäkelä.
