Washington, DC CNN —US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is the latest person dealing with problems with a Boeing jet. This is the second time this year that Blinken has had an issue with a Boeing plane while traveling. The incident has sparked numerous investigations into the Boeing’s practices and public attention to a large number of other problems on subsequent flights with Boeing jets. Many of those came on older planes and issues, which typically would have not been reported, were likely not caused by anything Boeing did. But the subsequent incidents, which typically would have not been reported by the media, have focused more attention on questions about the quality and safety of Boeing jets.

Robert Graves started flying in the Air Force and has been a Southwest Airlines pilot for 33 years. On an average day, I'll pilot three to five flights. When I'm away as a pilot, I'm by myself, but when I'm back home, I'm a husband and a dad to four kids. I rarely know the other pilot I'm flying with. David E. Harris, a former Air Force bomber pilot who at the height of the civil rights movement in the 1960s became the first Black pilot hired by a major commercial airline in the United States, died on March 8 in Marietta, Ga., about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta. American Airlines hired Mr. Harris in 1964, and he flew for the carrier for 30 years, rising to captain in 1967. In 1984, he made history for the second time with American when he flew with the first all-Black cockpit crew on a commercial airliner. Before Mr. Harris was hired, airline executives had discriminated for years against Black pilots out of fear that white passengers wouldn’t want to board the planes they flew, and that it would be too difficult to find them hotel accommodations. “He knew that he was extremely qualified, so on paper he would seem like an ideal candidate to many commercial airlines,” Michael H. Cottman wrote in his book “Segregated Skies: David Harris’s Trailblazing Journey to Rise Above Racial Barriers” (2021).

Washington CNN —Boeing’s problems aren’t just Boeing’s. One of America’s biggest manufacturers is dealing with some serious production, quality and safety problems that worsened this week after a 787 Dreamliner plunged suddenly mid-flight, injuring dozens of passengers. Southwest and United earlier this week said they expect Boeing to ship them fewer planes than they planned on receiving, so they’ll hire fewer pilots. (Boeing continued to build the 737 Max throughout the crisis). And Boeing’s years of problems have led to success for its French rival Airbus, which has overtaken Boeing as the world’s largest aircraft manufacturer.

Most U.S. adults believe that air travel is generally safe in the U.S., despite some doubts about whether aircraft are being properly maintained and remain free from structural problems. About 7 in 10 U.S. adults say planes are a “very” or “somewhat” safe method of travel, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Slightly fewer than half — 45% — have “a great deal” of confidence in pilots' training, while 38% say that about air traffic controllers. About one-quarter of U.S. adults have a high level of confidence that air travel is safe from terrorist attacks, or that government agencies have enacted necessary safety regulations. Randi Niedfeldt, a retired physician assistant in Wisconsin, has a great deal of confidence in the planes, despite the recent incidents.

A Copa Airlines jet became the first MAX 9 to return to service on Thursday. Why airlines plug up emergency exits
  + stars: | 2024-01-25 | by ( Amy Fraher | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
However, as a former United Airlines pilot now lecturing in Yale University’s School of Management, I believe the wrong questions are being asked about what happened on Alaska Airlines Flight 1282. The question we need to ask is: Why wouldn’t an airline use all of an aircraft’s emergency exits? Others, such as emergency exits, are more opaque to travelers. NTSB/Handout/ReutersWhy you get more emergency exits in IndonesiaIn the US, airlines must comply with federal aviation regulations, which dictate aircraft maintenance procedures and in-flight personnel assignments – and minimum standards for emergency exits. That’s precisely what happened with Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 – and how “door plug” suddenly entered the American vernacular.
