That’s thanks to a new international airport, equipped with a 2,200-meter (7,217-foot) runway, opening in the capital of Nuuk. Before the new airport’s opening, traveling by air to Greenland meant flying into smaller cities such as Kangerlussuaq to the north or Narsarsuaq, further south. The new airport will serve as the base for Air Greenland, which will operate an Airbus A330neo plane on a route to Copenhagen, Denmark. Jens Lauridsen, chief executive of Greenland Airports, knows the opening of the new facility at Nuuk will have a big effect on tourism and the economy. She plans on being on the first flight that lands at the new Nuuk International Airport.

EasyJet on Tuesday said it made a record £3.59 billion ($4.5 billion) from charging passengers for flight add-ons such as extra baggage in the full year to October, as the budget airline's CEO criticized a recent Spanish fine over the practice. Many airlines have stripped back what they include in their flight fares in recent years, instead relying on cashing in more from individual add-ons, as competition to offer ultra-low cost base fares intensifies. "We completely disagree with that, we think it goes completely against European law and European law's going to trump that," easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Tuesday. "It's a highly unfair idea that you should not be able to offer products and services targeted for those people who want to use that. Spain's Association of Airlines (ALA), Ryanair, Norwegian and easyJet last week all criticized the fines and said they would dispute them.

However, he said it was ultimately up to the state to approve the plans, which have been highly controversial for decades. So if we want to go beyond a certain number at Heathrow, whether that is 90 million passengers or anything around that, we need a third runway, that's not a discussion," Woldbye said. 'We' here is not just Heathrow, that's the airlines, it's government, it's parliament, it's everybody around us. CNN —Airlines have pocketed billions of dollars in so-called “junk fees” by charging customers extra to select a seat or to carry on bags, according to a Senate subcommittee report published on Tuesday. The report said some airlines have even paid workers cash incentives to identify customers trying to avoid fees for carry-on bags. The report, from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said that in 2023, United Airlines charged as much as $319 for an extra legroom seat, Spirit Airlines charged as much as $299, Delta Air Lines charged as much as $264, Frontier Airlines charged $141 and American Airlines charged as much as $140. “The subcommittee clearly lacks appreciation for the fact that air travel today is democratized, allowing Americans across all income levels to fly. Today, because of the revolution in air travel, nearly ninety percent of Americans have flown.

A Senate subcommittee on Tuesday slammed U.S. airlines large and small over fees to pick seats on flights. Between 2018 and 2023 American , Delta , United , Spirit and Frontier brought in $12.4 billion in seating fees, including for seats with extra legroom as well as those in "preferred" locations that are closer to the front of the plane, or window or aisle seats, said the report from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. While most major U.S. airlines have gotten rid of ticket-change fees for standard economy tickets, they have added fees to select more popular or roomier seats on board. Carriers have also been racing to add more premium seats on board to increase revenue.

A record 31 million passengers are expected to fly US airlines over the course of this week, according to Airlines for America, the industry trade group. And while many airlines have increased the available number of flights and seats, those capacity increases have not kept pace with demand. With some of the busiest months yet to come, a new record for the percentage of seats airlines’ filled is within reach. Airlines are signaling prices will probably go higher as some of the lower-fare airlines struggled with ongoing losses and sharply reduced their capacity. But critics of the airlines say troubles at the lower fare airlines aren’t solely to blame for higher fares.

Google proposes fresh tweaks to search results in Europe

Google has proposed more changes to its search results in Europe after some smaller rivals complained about lower traffic to their sites resulting from previous tweaks by the Alphabet unit and as EU antitrust regulators consider levying charges against the company under new EU tech rules. Under the Digital Markets Act, Google is prohibited from favouring its products and services on its platform. The latter three groups said their direct booking clicks have fallen by 30% due to recent Google changes. "We think the latest proposal is the right way to balance the difficult trade-offs that the DMA involves," Bethell said. "We're very reluctant to take this step, as removing helpful features does not benefit consumers or businesses in Europe," Bethell said.

This luxury is set to be taken to new heights on British Airways superjumbos, as the airline just unveiled a fresh design for its first class airplane seat, set to launch on BA’s A380 planes in 2026. CNN Travel was among the first to try out British Airways’ new cabin product during an unveiling at the airline’s London headquarters. British Airways suggests the wardrobe eliminates the need for overhead storage, which (perhaps controversially) won’t be a component of these new first class cabins. Each first class seat also features a 32-inch 4K inflight personal entertainment screen and adjustable mood lighting, including a “cinema” mode. Future of first classWhile British Airways is investing in its premium cabins, some airlines are moving away from first class.

Never before, lobbyists say, has the geographic center of power shifted so dramatically with the arrival of a new administration. By leveraging his access to Trump, Ballard Partners was able to compete with the old white-shoe lobbying firms that have been the industry's dominant players for decades. Corporate clients need lobbyists who appreciate that Trump is "disrupting the status quo in Washington," Sayfie, the Ballard lobbyist, says. Some major companies, lobbyists say, have been caught off guard by the rapid pace of Trump's transition moves. Those who bankroll his staff and travel before he takes office, lobbyists say, stand to build connections and curry favor with the once and future commander in chief.

Shai Weiss, chief executive officer of Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd., on day two of the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, UK, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. LONDON – Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss on Monday said the U.K. Labour government's landmark October budget presented a "tax on growth" due to higher rates placed on the aviation industry. "I would call [the Budget] a tax on growth," Weiss said Monday, adding that while it was necessary to cover Britain's budget deficit, it was also important to recognize the contribution of aviation to the wider U.K. economy. For journeys between 2,001 and 5,500 miles, APD will rise to £102 from £90 in economy and to £244 from £216 in other classes. CNBC has contacted the U.K. Treasury for comment.

Three years ago, Southwest Airlines started flying out of Bellingham, Wash., a growing city near the Canadian border, aiming to do what it had done in dozens of smaller airports — sell lots of tickets to people who have few other travel options. Officials and residents in Bellingham, which sits between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, were thrilled as the airline added new nonstop service to cities on the West Coast at affordable prices. “The community embraced them, and we loved having them,” said Rob Fix, the executive director of the Port of Bellingham, which oversees the airport. But the expansion didn’t work as planned. This year, facing unexpected costs and challenges, Southwest left Bellingham and a handful of other cities it had started serving during an ambitious period of growth early in the recovery from the pandemic — markets that it said were underperforming.

Starbucks' airport location staff — and company technology — will be put to the test this week during some of the busiest travel days of the year. For the aviation industry, bottlenecks at airport Starbucks are just another sign of soaring demand and overcrowded airports. Licensing modelA challenge for Starbucks is that licensees — not Starbucks itself – operate its airport locations. Starbucks opened its first airport location with licensee HMSHost in 1991 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which serves Starbucks' hometown. While HMSHost still operates the overwhelming majority of Starbucks' airport cafes, more operators, such as Paradies Lagardere and OTG, have since taken a swing at it.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — An Israeli-Moldovan rabbi living in the United Arab Emirates has gone missing, with Israeli authorities raising the suspicion Saturday he may have been kidnapped as tensions remain high with Iran. Israeli media citing unnamed security sources reported that Zvi Kogan, who has been missing since noon Thursday, may have been kidnapped. Western officials believe Iran runs intelligence operations in the UAE and keeps tabs on the hundreds of thousands of Iranians living across the country. Iran also kidnapped Iranian-German Jamshid Sharmahd in 2020 from Dubai, taking him back to Tehran where he was executed in October.
