Sept 13 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain said on Wednesday the union is still seeking significant pay hikes as talks continue with the Detroit Three automakers, a day before four-year labor deals are set to expire. Reuters reported late on Tuesday that the union may opt to strike at targeted auto plants if they fail to reach new contracts covering 146,000 U.S. auto workers. The UAW initially sought a 20% wage hike upon ratification and four annual 5% hikes, but had offered trim those hikes to around 36% in total, three sources told Reuters. Fain said the union was still seeking 40% hikes in total. Coordinated strikes would mark the first-ever simultaneous labor stoppage at all three Detroit automakers and one of the largest U.S. industrial labor actions in recent years.

Two of Australia’s largest grassroots Indigenous football bodies – Indigenous Football Australia (IFA) and the Australian Indigenous Football Council (AIFC) – say there’s no funding for Indigenous football in Legacy ’23, the 357 million Australian dollar ($228 million) post-tournament fund dedicated to growing soccer in Australia. Biden and UAW President Shawn Fain met briefly in the West Wing last month while UAW leadership was at the White House briefing senior staff on their positions. Fain has publicly warned that UAW is prepared to strike, saying nearly 150,000 members will strike if the three automakers do not meet their demands. Ford pointed out that it employs more UAW members and builds more cars and trucks at US plants than any other automaker. For the most part, those plants are joint ventures between automakers and battery makers, and thus will not be covered under the UAW contracts with the Big Three. But the union has yet to reach a deal with plant management on a contract, and workers there are paid about half of what UAW members are paid at the Big Three.

CEOs at 500 major firms make 272 times more than their workers, according to a new report. That's per the latest executive pay report from the AFL-CIO, which looks at S&P 500 compensation. On average, CEOs make $16.7 million, a $5 million increase over the last decade. Over the last ten years, CEOs' paychecks have swelled by $5 million on average — leading to average compensation of $16.7 million in 2022, according to the AFL-CIO's latest iteration of its annual Executive Paywatch report. On average, CEOs in that field make nearly $38 million.
