August 2 - The Philadelphia Phillies will look to record their third straight victory in their four-game series against the host Miami Marlins on Wednesday night. Miami also sent stellar pitching prospect Jake Eder to the Chicago White Sox for third baseman Jake Burger. Finally, the Marlins sent first baseman Garrett Cooper and right-handed pitcher Sean Reynolds to San Diego for pitcher Ryan Weathers. "It's hard to see a couple of those guys leave," Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said following Tuesday's game. Unfortunately for the Marlins, Robertson squandered a save chance on Tuesday.

Here's why public transit keeps running out of money
  + stars: | 2023-07-25 | by ( Juhohn Lee | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Public transit is a vital force for the American economy. The American Public Transportation Association estimates that 87% of trips directly benefit the local economy, with $1 invested in public transit believed to generate $5 in economic returns. But the state of public transit in the U.S. is declining rapidly as transit across the nation faces a fiscal crisis. "If a transit system doesn't have enough money, we can limit the hour of services and the frequency of service," said Norton. Watch the video to learn more about public transit in the U.S. and why it is in decline despite its economic benefits.

Fewer productions. Fewer performances. Cal Shakes, a Bay Area favorite that staged Shakespeare in an outdoor amphitheater, is producing no shows this year. The Williamstown Theater Festival, known for its star-studded summer shows, has no fully staged productions at its Western Massachusetts home this season. “It’s one of the best-designed diversion programs in the country,” said Carl Gershenson of The Eviction Lab at Princeton University. Poor tenants tend to spend most of their income on rent, so a medical bill, job loss or unexpected car repairs can lead to a missed payment. The program’s early success, experts said, was helped immensely by the billions of dollars in federal rental assistance money, which Philadelphia used to pay arrears. Though landlords complained that the payouts did not always go smoothly, the possibility of recouping back rent made mandatory diversion more palatable. She enjoyed stable housing with a housing voucher until early 2017, when she was forced out of a home she had lived in for about a decade.

Just over a year before the attack on Pearl Harbor, 15 sailors assigned to the U.S.S. Philadelphia wrote a letter to a Black newspaper detailing the abuse and indignities they had faced on the warship solely because of the color of their skin. When they enlisted, the Navy had promised training and assignments that would lead to advancement, but the Black sailors soon found that those opportunities did not exist for them. The plight of the group, which became known as “the Philadelphia 15,” faded from public attention as World War II erupted. But the injustice they faced, and the stigma their discharge papers carried, lived on for more than 80 years.

Now, Philadelphia cream cheese and H&H Bagels, a New York City-based bagel shop, are trying to please the carbohydrate- and dairy-loving communities with a new and dubious spin on the stuffed crust: The bagel stuffed with cream cheese. But unlike stuffed-crust pizzas, the bagel is filled with cheese after it is baked, making it more of a cream cheese bagel donut, if not in spirit then at least in form. What’s so wrong with slicing a bagel and slathering on a healthy amount of cream cheese? New York doesn’t have a specific bagel tax, explained Ryan Cleveland, a representative of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Philadelphia cream cheese, which struggled with shortages in the past, turned that issue into a marketing opportunity as well.

The Federal Reserve's interest rate stance hinges on incoming data such as Wednesday's consumer price report, but fears of recession remain just that. And so investors return to scrutinising the Fed to see if the central bank forces the recession by tightening ever further. With Fed policy meeting minutes due later in the day, the runes of what must have been a tense gathering of officials in the middle of the regional banking shock will be eyed closely. Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari reckoned recession was still a risk but inflation wouldn't get back close to the 2% target until next year. Hong Kong stocks (.HSI) underperformed overnight - with geopolitical tensions high surrounding Taiwan and Chinese military operations around the island.
