And the vast majority are not, in fact, shaping our lives and career goals around a TikTok trend. Some of us want to work to live, not live to work. Some of us are deeply ambitious at certain points in our lives, and then more focused on life outside of work at others. A lot of jobs aren’t particularly interesting, fun or meaningful. A lot of men do work jobs with fewer hours and less pay, or don’t work at all, but there’s no TikTok trend about it.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he would not support disinviting Robert Kennedy Jr. from testifying. Republicans have called Kennedy Jr. to testify before a special subcommittee on the "weaponization" of the federal government. Kennedy Jr. is facing a torrent of criticism after he suggested that there is "an argument" that COVID-19 was targeted to spare Chinese and Ashkenazi Jews. COVID-19 attacks certain races disproportionately," Kennedy Jr. said at a press dinner in remarks first reported by The New York Post. In response, Kennedy Jr. claimed that The Post mischaracterized his comments.

Mr. Williams’s office said it would also seek to have the city held in contempt of court “to address the ongoing risk of harm” to detainees and jails staff. Ultimately it will fall to a judge, Laura Taylor Swain, to decide whether a takeover is necessary. Any finding from the judge that the city is unable to manage its own jails could be deeply embarrassing to Mr. Adams and his administration. The following year, Mayor Adams assumed office and appointed a new jails commissioner, Louis A. Molina, who vowed to get things under control. Still, 19 people died while being held in city jails in 2022, or directly after they were released, the most in nearly a decade.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. baselessly claimed COVID-19 may have been "ethnically targeted" to spare certain groups. He said Caucasians and black people were most susceptible, and Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people were most immune. "COVID-19, there is an argument that it is ethnically targeted. "COVID-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and black people. The Anti-Defamation League responded to Kennedy's claims about COVID-19 being ethnically targeted in a statement to The Post.

A conspiracy-filled rant by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that the Covid-19 virus was engineered to spare Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people has stirred accusations of antisemitism and racism in the Democratic candidate’s long-shot run for president. There is an argument that it is ethnically targeted. Covid-19 attacks certain races disproportionately,” Mr. Kennedy said at a private gathering in New York that was captured on videotape by The New York Post. “Covid-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people. But his suggestion that the coronavirus pandemic spared Chinese people and Jews of European descent strayed into new and bigoted territory.

A look through China's economy today reveals a few dilemmas, especially for investors trying to gauge future growth. The nature of China's economic recovery over the last few months from Covid have unique characteristics that aren't easily captured in broad strokes, Goldman Sachs' Andrew Tilton and a team pointed out back in late May. That means the stock winners of China's recovery are likely hidden under broader market performance. One month since Goldman's assessment, China's economic trajectory remains the same. "If weak confidence becomes so entrenched, it could be self-fulling and derail the economic recovery."

CARE Hospitals Group, according to another investor source, is in talks to sell a 70% stake to U.S. investment giant Blackstone (BX.N) in a deal valued at $800 million. MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN EVERAs government hospitals became increasingly overburdened and incomes rose in India's vast middle class, demand for private healthcare rose over the years. "The India healthcare opportunity has always been attractive, but never more than now. In 2022, PE investors spent $3.2 billion buying stakes in hospitals in India. "Big private hospitals are more reliable," said 35-year-old G. Chavan said as he accompanied his wife to see a doctor.

WASHINGTON, June 27 (Reuters) - Over $200 billion from the U.S. government's COVID-19 relief programs were likely stolen, a federal watchdog said on Tuesday, adding that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) had weakened its controls in a rush to disburse the funds. The SBA disputed the more than $200 billion figure put forward by the watchdog and said the inspector general's approach had significantly overestimated fraud. The agency said its experts put the likely fraud estimate at $36 billion and added that over 86% of that likely fraud took place in 2020, when the administration for former President Donald Trump was in office. The fraud estimate put forward by the inspector general for the EIDL program stood at more than $136 billion while the PPP fraud estimate was $64 billion. Earlier this year, a separate watchdog report said the U.S. government likely awarded about $5.4 billion in COVID-19 aid to people with questionable Social Security numbers.

The 1956 horror movie “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” with Kevin McCarthy, conjured one of our deepest fears as humans, one with particular resonance for the American ethos: Your humanity is replaced by something similar but frighteningly different, your self erased. “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” has been repeatedly adapted because the fear it plays on is one at the core of the American self-conception. Jakub Porzycki | NurPhoto | Getty ImagesNovavax has a clear message for Wall Street: The cash-strapped Covid vaccine maker sees a pathway to survival. The 36-year-old company will continue to rely on its protein-based Covid vaccine – its only commercially available product – for most of its revenue this year. Once the U.S. government's supply of free Covid vaccines runs out, all three companies will sell updated shots directly to health-care providers. A health worker prepares a dose of the Novavax vaccine as the Dutch Health Service Organization starts with the Novavax vaccination program on March 21, 2022 in The Hague, Netherlands. But Taylor emphasized that the plan will help Novavax refocus on its top priority: delivering an updated vaccine in the coming months.

CNN —It’s only June, but scientists in the US are already thinking about flu season. As always at this time of year, they’re keeping a close eye on Australia, which saw an early start to its flu season. “We closely monitor what happens in countries throughout the Southern Hemisphere this time of year, just to see what’s happening during their flu season. If many people opt out of the flu vaccine, cases could rise. So while Reed and her colleagues will be watching Australia’s flu numbers and running their calculations, it’s still not totally clear what 2023’s flu season will bring for the US.

June 9 (Reuters) - Daily U.S. sign-ups for Netflix (NFLX.O) have jumped in the first few days after the streaming giant's password-sharing crackdown came into effect on May 23, data from research firm Antenna showed. Netflix had estimated that more than a 100 million households had supplied their log-in credentials to people outside their homes. Under the new rules, U.S. users can add a member outside of their homes for an additional fee of $8 per month. Its calculations seem to have paid off as the company recorded nearly 100,000 daily sign-ups on both May 26 and May 27, according to Antenna. Netflix, which has expanded its crackdown to more than 100 other countries, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Cases of human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, spiked this spring, according to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s respiratory virus surveillance systems. An underestimated threatStudies show that HMPV causes as much misery in the US each year as the flu and a closely related virus, RSV. Like those infections, HMPV can lead to intensive care and fatal cases of pneumonia in older adults. Leigh Davidson caught human metapneumovirus during a family celebration in early April. The new virus was dubbed human metapneumovirus.
I'm prone to kidney stones, and I'm very conscious of the ongoing risk of COVID-19. There are also a few other reasons why I'm investing in travel insurance this summer. Some travel insurance plans cover travel delays, which will guarantee the funds from my canceled flights will go back into my bank account. Not all countries accept US health insurance, so travel insurance will give me the flexibility to get the health support I need without additional costs. Travel insurance gives me the confidence to book a trip, even if I might have to cancel it at the last minute.

Eight months ago, the future of China’s largest internet companies looked grim. Covid-era lockdowns crushed sales and Beijing’s harsh tech regulations had spooked even audacious China investors. With China’s economy now reopen, the tech giants this week released earnings reports that showed initial signs of recovery. Revenue rose 10 percent at Baidu, which said on Tuesday that strong digital advertising sales had continued into the current quarter. Tencent, China’s dominant video game company, also benefited from easing restrictions on gaming licenses last year after a nine-month freeze.
Will The U.S. Economy Pull Off a ‘Soft Landing’? The soft, the hard and the grayThere isn’t any standard definition of an economic soft landing. But what’s an acceptable inflation rate? On the other side, policymakers used to believe that an unemployment rate below 4 percent was basically unattainable without runaway inflation. Unless we have a really, really hard landing, the overall story of the postpandemic economy will be one of remarkable resilience.
Target said Wednesday that organized retail crime will fuel $500 million more in stolen and lost merchandise this year compared with a year ago. He described retail theft as "a worsening trend that emerged last year," and said violent incidents have increased at Target's stores. "The country has a retail theft problem," Home Depot CFO Richard McPhail said on a call with CNBC on Tuesday. Yet it's hard to verify if organized retail theft has grown and if so, by how much. Target has become more vocal about organized retail theft, as it has struggled with excess inventory and its margins have disappointed.
Bat lands worldwide are besieged, seeding risk of a new pandemic
  + stars: | 2023-05-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +16 min
This collision – bats and humans competing for resources on territory long the domain of the bats – could trigger the next pandemic. As people destroy bat habitats worldwide, they are unwittingly helping bat-borne viruses mutate, multiply, and infect other species, including homo sapiens. For millennia, bat viruses lurked across the forests of West Africa and in other undisturbed parts of the world but posed little threat to humanity. They’re potent proliferators: Some roost tightly together and in close quarters with other bat species. Each of the bat viruses analyzed by Reuters has epidemic potential, according to the World Health Organization.

The U.S. public health emergency declared in response to Covid-19 comes to an end Thursday more than three years after the pandemic began. The Biden administration's decision to end the emergency comes as deaths and hospitalizations have declined dramatically due to the availability of vaccines, antiviral treatments and widespread exposure to the virus. The end of the emergency will bring significant changes in how the U.S. responds to the virus. After the emergency ends, the CDC will no longer be able to compel labs to report Covid test results. While public health experts agree the U.S. has many more tools to fight Covid today, they warn the virus will remain a persistent threat to the elderly, the vulnerable and the nation's fragmented, battered health-care system.
