It could also have a major impact on House and Senate races. We talked by email about the state of play for the House and Senate and how the shake-up in the presidential race might change things. PATHE: House races are typically more nationalized than Senate races because the candidates are lesser known; therefore, it’s harder for them to separate themselves from their party and the top of the ticket. WOLF: The presidential primary process is over, but we’re still in the thick of statewide primaries for House and Senate races. When the white Gen X child turned 27 in 2005, they could expect to make more than $34,000. But Mr. Cain did have a strong community — which he said taught him entrepreneurship and showed him he could dream big. Mr. Cain, 35, got a two-year degree in business management and first worked as a bank teller and financial adviser. At the same time, white millennials born to poor parents had a harder time than their white Gen X counterparts. CNN —Disneyland has averted the possibility of the first employee strike in 40 years by reaching a tentative agreement with 14,000 workers on Tuesday. Approximately 9,500 of those employees whose contract had already expired voted Friday to authorize a strike, which had yet to be scheduled as planned negotiations continued early this week. Here are the top numbers and notes to know from the final round of the 152nd Open Championship. For the second time this season, Schauffele shot a final round 65 to win a major. Schauffele is the first player to win the PGA and Open in the same season since Rory McIlroy did it 10 years ago. With the 2024 major schedule completed, this is the first time American players have swept a major season (in a year when all four were contested) since 1982. Of the last six players to win multiple majors in the same season, four won another major within the next two years.

TROON, Scotland — Xander Schauffele was for so long the best golfer without a major. The ever-steady 30-year-old star never topped the Open leaderboard Thursday to Saturday, always quietly lurking in the top 10 before shooting a Sunday 65 to win the 152nd Open Championship for his second major title in three starts. For the first time since 1982, Americans — Schauffele (Open Championship, PGA Championship), Scottie Scheffler (Masters) and Bryson DeChambeau (U.S. Open) — have claimed all four major championships. Sunday began with Horschel, a 37-year-old seeking his first major championship, in the lead by one stroke, playing in the final group of a major’s final round for the first time. Now Schauffele enters the Olympics and the rest of the season no longer an admirable player who can’t win.

As Sam Brown, a Republican and Army veteran, has campaigned for Nevada’s U.S. Senate seat against Senator Jacky Rosen, he has deployed a potent weapon against his Democratic foe: the unpopularity of President Biden among the state’s voters. Mr. Brown and his campaign have linked Ms. Rosen to Mr. Biden and his policies at every turn, slamming her support for him on the campaign trail and online and even occasionally referring to her as “Jacky Biden.”Now, with Mr. Biden’s future at the top of the Democratic ticket in doubt, Republicans like Mr. Brown, campaigning in competitive down-ballot races that could decide control of Congress, are considering whether they will need to alter their messaging to account for a different Democratic presidential nominee — whether that is Vice President Kamala Harris or another challenger.

I am far from the only young conservative whose interest in politics was sparked by the issue of abortion. Along the way, many of us found ourselves in the Republican Party, often picking up other conservative causes along the way — low taxes, limited government, strong defense, border security. While traditional social conservatives and the Republican Party might be allies on some key issues, it looks like it is no longer just one political party that wants us to shelve our convictions in the name of political expediency. A secularizing America, plus the shifting composition of the Republican Party, means many G.O.P. Many young conservatives, in particular, seem more enthusiastic about owning the libs than strengthening the family.

Tokyo CNN —America’s two most powerful allies in the Pacific are taking their defense ties to new heights amid increasing concerns over China’s assertiveness in the region and North Korean threats, Japan’s top general said Thursday. Yoshida called on Japan, South Korea and the United States to “demonstrate our strong unity domestically and globally to ensure regional peace and stability.”But bilateral cooperation between Japan and South Korea is the most noteworthy result of this week’s meeting in Tokyo. Kim said he and Yoshida “share a lot of the same thoughts,” an acknowledgment of the mutual perspective on the regional threat posed by China and North Korea. Last month, Japan and South Korea joined the US in the inaugural Freedom Edge in the Pacific, a military exercise that focused on ballistic missile and air defense, anti-submarine warfare and more. “Domestic politics remain complicated in Seoul and Tokyo, but policymakers and military professionals want to lock in coordinated responses to North Korea, Russia, and China before any major political changes occur in Washington,” Easley said.

Mark Epstein said Jeffrey Epstein told him he wasn't subpoenaed for any depositions at that time. The equipment issue on the spacecraft could result in a lengthy delay of the mission, Europa Clipper, which NASA classifies as “flagship,” a designation for its most scientifically significant endeavors. Experts say that if the spacecraft launches in October, as scheduled, it may fall short of its scientific objective of assessing whether anything could live on Europa. At issue is the ability of the transistors, the electric switches that are the building blocks of computer chips and other electronics, to resist the powerful radiation of the Jovian system. Space is awash in radiation caused by forces such as cosmic rays and solar eruptions, and every spacecraft requires some level of radiation protection. But Europa orbits inside a particularly perilous region of space called the Jovian radiation belt, where conditions can be over 50 times more radioactive than those found around Earth.

A handful of states, including Texas and Nevada, have set up dedicated systems designed to restore tenants to their homes after an illegal lockout. She and her family still don't have a new apartment, she said, and the eviction cases on her record don't help. BI reviewed two years' worth of lockout cases from the department and found city lawyers routinely dismissed tickets, often without documenting why. Bridget Bennett for Business InsiderThat afternoon, Brown had three cases on his docket in which tenants were alleging they'd been illegally locked out and dozens of cases in which landlords were seeking formal evictions. In 2022, Miami-Dade County passed a tenant's bill of rights that underlines the illegality of lockouts and limits a landlord's ability to harass tenants.

Officers interviewed two motel residents who called 911; they said they did not want to leave their homes. Alyssa Pointer for Business InsiderIn Georgia, an eviction requires a court order, but the law doesn't explicitly make lockouts illegal. In this case, an officer classified the incident as a "crime against property" — a crime committed by the residents themselves. In unincorporated Clark County, where the property is located, operating a short-term rental without a license is illegal. Matthew Main is an attorney who has represented residents in similarly precarious housing situations in New York City, where state law also grants residents tenants' rights after 30 days.

A longtime kingmaker in southern New Jersey, Norcross often wielded influence through back channels. CNN —CNN Opinion asked political contributors to weigh in on the first presidential debate of the 2024 race. On the other hand, President Joe Biden did not meet expectations and may have increased concerns about his age and ability to lead for another four years. That’s because the economy has consistently ranked among the top — if not the very top — voter issues in presidential election after presidential election. Unemployment: Low, but with warning signs aheadThe nation’s unemployment rate stayed below 4% for 27 months, its longest such streak and a match for a period in the 1960s. That streak ended last month, when the unemployment rate rose to 4% from 3.9%. That means job seekers might find it harder to get hired. Why water is the best drink during a heat wave

We know that keeping hydrated is important to staying healthy in the summer heat, but is water still the best drink during a heat wave? CNN: When it’s really hot outside, is water still the best fluid, or should people turn to sports drinks? Energy drinks are different from sports drinks, which are meant to help you restore water and electrolytes. I urge parents to be careful to distinguish between sports drinks and energy drinks. Sports drinks probably aren’t needed, and, again, it’s advisable for children to avoid energy drinks.

While the expansion of legal sports betting has made gambling more accessible, it's also helped spot infractions like these. The MLB also said it was tipped off about Marcano's betting activity by a legal sports-betting operator, ESPN reported. "When you are operating in the dark, you have no idea what is actually happening — if refs are partaking in illegal betting or players are partaking in betting," Slane said. Many US states where sports betting is legal require gambling companies to work with a licensed independent integrity-monitoring service, like IC360 or Sportradar, to identify suspicious betting activity. They could be college football players betting on the NFL, or NFL players betting on games their teams weren't playing in.

While the expansion of legal sports betting has made gambling more accessible, it's also helped spot infractions like these. The MLB also said it was tipped off about Marcano's betting activity by a legal sports-betting operator, ESPN reported. There's little data available to show whether gambling violations like these occur more or less often in the age of legal gambling, in part because they weren't easily tracked before 2018. They could be college football players betting on the NFL, or NFL players betting on games their teams weren't playing in. As sports-betting continues to expand in more states and the industry evolves, there may be more gambling scandals to come.

CNN —Maryland’s governor pardoned more than 175,000 marijuana convictions Monday – a significant act of mass clemency that reflects the rapidly changing attitudes toward a drug that more than half of Americans want to see legalized. Wes Moore, a Democrat, will forgive low-level marijuana possession and certain paraphernalia charges for an estimated 100,000 people, the governor’s office said, noting it was possible for a person to have more than one conviction pardoned. But it will result in the pardons of more than 150,000 misdemeanor convictions for simple possession of cannabis and more than 18,000 misdemeanor convictions for use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia. Officials framed the pardons as an effort to undo the lasting harm left by these convictions, which are disproportionately borne by Black and brown people. The war on drugs was a war on communities of color,” Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown said at Monday’s event.

“He was the one with the super predators,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Biden. A New York Times/Siena College poll of battleground states in May showed 23 percent of Black voters supporting Mr. Trump, a record level. In Detroit, Mr. Trump highlighted the funding bill that he signed for Black higher education institutions, which Congress passed. At the church, Mr. Trump stuck to the themes that have animated his outreach to Black voters. He again tried to seize on pessimism over the economy by blaming Mr. Biden for inflation and high rents.
