New York CNN —At 5 p.m. PT on January 5, 2024, Boeing seemed like a company on the upswing. Those chapters shone throughout the opening stanza of a six-day state funeral intended to blend personalized memorials with the ceremonial pomp afforded to former presidents. The procession stopped at the farm where the future president toiled alongside the Black sharecroppers who worked for his father. The motorcade continued to Atlanta, stopping in front of the Georgia Capitol where Carter served as a state senator and reformist governor. Indeed, Carter helped plan his own funeral to emphasize that his remarkable rise to the world stage was because of — not despite — his deep rural roots. Smyre, who is Black, said Carter’s repudiation of racial segregation allowed Black people to wield power in Georgia.

“I wanted to record this message for my family,” Shamsud-Din Jabbar said in the videos. Jabbar, 42, drove a rented truck from Houston to New Orleans on New Year’s Eve, authorities said, posting videos online along the way. While it may not have surprised experts, Jabbar’s rampage has bewildered his family, friends and colleagues, who described him as kind and unassuming. “It’s a complete surprise, a shock to everyone,” Jabbar’s half brother, Abdur-Rahim Jabbar IV, 24, said in an interview this week. Jabbar expressed being upset about the situation, calling it “genocide on both sides.”After his most recent divorce, Jabbar seemed to become more devout, though he never discussed ISIS or any radical ideologies.

The Summary A report from the U.S. surgeon general suggested that labels on alcoholic drinks should warn about cancer risk. Doctors on Friday applauded a new report from the U.S. surgeon general that highlights links between alcohol consumption and seven types of cancer and suggests that alcoholic drinks should come with cancer warning labels. Alcohol is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., behind tobacco and obesity, according to the surgeon general’s report. Compared to smoking, doctors said, there’s less research on how long it takes to see reductions in cancer risk after a person stops drinking. Already, adults under 35 have become less likely to drink alcohol than that group was decades ago, according to a 2023 analysis.

The driver who killed 14 people in an ISIS-inspired attack by plowing into a crowded New Orleans street on New Year’s Day had planned to use a transmitter to detonate two explosive devices he had placed nearby, authorities have said. Neither of the explosive devices were detonated, and it remains unclear whether the failure was due to a malfunction, lack of activation, or another issue. The transmitter and two guns were recovered from Jabbar’s truck, the statement said, and are being transported to an FBI laboratory for testing. Federal investigators examining the attack say that Jabbar used a very rare explosive compound in the two devices, two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter told NBC News. The FBI has stated that the investigation remains ongoing and it has not changed its posture that Jabbar acted alone.

In the scramble to rewrite Syria’s future, it is perhaps no surprise that the classroom would lay bare cracks in the country’s fragile unity. Widespread outcry followed an announcement that Syria’s new leadership was planning sweeping changes to the country’s education curriculum. The ISIS-inspired attack in New Orleans underscores how extremism online and political divisions at home have created “a perfect storm” for radicalization in America, experts say, with law enforcement struggling to track an increasingly fractured threat. And all that is playing into a perfect storm of factors that are leading to an increase in radicalization.”According to the federal government, the main terror threat to the U.S. now is lone actors inspired by extremism ideology. But sometimes, as in the New Orleans attack, the driving ideology is radical Islamism. Berger, an extremism researcher with the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, said in an email. That shift had the center’s vice president, Oren Segal, worried even before the New Orleans attack, he said.

NEW ORLEANS — Vehicle attacks are a rising global terror threat that can be difficult to prevent — but the deadly assault on New Year’s revelers in New Orleans shows how a city’s efforts to protect a heavily crowded and vulnerable area can fall short, experts said. “New Orleans does have mobile vehicle barriers that are designed to block streets and sidewalks,” Don Aviv, CEO of Interfor International, told NBC News on Friday. Asked hours later whether the police had considered the possibility of a driver mounting the sidewalk on Bourbon Street, Capt. The sense of betrayal was echoed by Bourbon Street workers as they returned to their jobs this week. “It seems worse than poor planning,” said Rory Windhorst, who works at a business on Bourbon Street near the site of the attack.

While my body took longer to recover the older I got, I also learned to enjoy little things more. By my 30s, I had a few more kids, a lot more chaos, and maybe just a little less mental bandwidth. And yet, when that baby smiles at me when I hear that little giggle, I remember exactly why I'm doing it. Now, at 40, I'm hoping to conquer the laundry pile before the baby wakes up. The journey might be a little more challenging the older you get, but it's also much more rewarding.
