Hamas’ military wing said its militants clashed with Israeli troops who entered the northwest Gaza Strip with small arms and anti-tank missiles. Meanwhile, crowded hospitals in northern Gaza came under growing threat. The U.N. said Monday that strikes hit near Gaza City's Shifa and Al-Quds hospitals and the Indonesian hospital in northern Gaza in recent days. All 10 hospitals still working in northern Gaza have received evacuation orders in recent days, the U.N.'s office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs said. The Israeli military said early Monday that its aircraft hit military infrastructure in Syria after rockets from there fell in open Israeli territory.

Israel has said Gaza's militant Hamas rulers have a command post under the hospital, without providing much evidence. The Israeli military had no immediate comment when asked about reports of strikes near Shifa. Casualties on both sides are expected to rise sharply as Israeli forces and Palestinian militants battle in dense residential areas. Despite the Israeli offensive, Palestinian militants have continued firing rockets into Israel, with the constant sirens in southern Israel a reminder of the threat. Israel says its strikes target Hamas fighters and infrastructure and that the militants operate among civilians, putting them in danger.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli troops and tanks briefly raided northern Gaza overnight, the military said Thursday, engaging with Hamas fighters and targeting anti-tank weapons in order to “prepare the battlefield” before an expected ground invasion. Israel has imposed a suffocating siege on Gaza since Hamas’ bloody rampage and hostage-taking across southern Israel ignited the war. The Israeli military says it only strikes militant targets and accuses Hamas of operating among civilians in an attempt to protect its fighters. That is more than three times the number of Palestinians killed in the six-week-long Gaza war in 2014. U.S. President Joe Biden addresses a joint press conference with Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the Rose Garden at the White House in Washington, U.S., Oct. 25, 2023. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden Wednesday stressed the United States believes the conflict between Israel and Hamas must end with a vision of a "two-state solution." "It also means, when this crisis is over there has to be a vision of what comes next, and, in our view, it has to be a two-state solution." Achieving this, Biden said, means "a concentrated effort for all the parties — Israelis, Palestinians, regional partners, global leaders — to put us on a path toward peace." Biden spoke in the White House Rose Garden, standing beside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at a press conference after their bilateral meeting Wednesday afternoon, and ahead of a state dinner.

Israel is widely expected to launch a ground offensive in Gaza following Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 rampage into southern Israeli communities. At least 222 people were captured and dragged back to Gaza, including foreigners, the military said Monday, updating a previous figure. The Israeli military released footage showing what it said were attacks on Hamas infrastructure. The Israeli military said a soldier was killed and three others were wounded by an anti-tank missile during a raid inside Gaza. Israel repeated its calls for people to leave northern Gaza, including by dropping leaflets from the air.

And the risk of triggering a broader war with Hamas' allies in Lebanon and Syria might also give them pause. More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed in the war — mostly civilians slain during the initial Hamas attack. Israeli forces killed at least five people early Sunday in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Sunday’s fatalities brought the death toll in the West Bank to 90 Palestinians since the war broke out on Oct. 7, according to the Health Ministry. In Gaza, the Israeli military said the humanitarian situation was “under control” as aid workers called for the opening of a round-the-clock aid corridor.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. He didn’t live to see the allies’ victory in World War II that year or the conference in San Francisco that month that established the United Nations. But his diplomatic efforts to meet with Arab leaders came undone after a devastating explosion at a hospital in Gaza. Biden himself initially supported the US 2003 war in Iraq only to end up as the president who ordered the US pullout of Afghanistan. “This is the politics that Donald Trump’s rhetoric has wrought among his supporters in the Republican Party,” wrote Avlon.

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli airstrikes pounded locations across the Gaza Strip early Thursday, including parts of the south that Israel had declared safe zones, heightening fears among more than 2 million Palestinians trapped in the territory that nowhere was safe. Hamas officials in Gaza blamed an Israeli airstrike, saying hundreds were killed. Airstrikes also hit three residential towers in al-Zahra, within the area that was told to evacuate, the Interior Ministry in Gaza said. Egypt must still repair the road across the border, which was cratered by Israeli airstrikes. He also announced $100 million in humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

A couple of days later, addressing NATO’s parliamentary assembly, where Ukraine had been a focus since Russia invaded it some 600 days ago, Zelensky noted the inescapable new reality facing his embattled country. To defeat Russia, and to save Ukraine, Zelensky needs continued support, especially from the US, the country with the world’s largest, most powerful arsenal. These two wars, between Russia and Ukraine, and between Israel and Hamas, are very different. Why Invading Gaza Is a Mistake - The New York Times

That military operation against Hezbollah was seen as a success — so punishing that it bought 17 years of relative quiet. But it also nurtured resentments that could help turn an invasion of Gaza into a wider regional war. Hamas appears to want to lure Israelis into Gaza and has been preparing for this battle for years. Israel’s military is not a paper tiger; it is one of the most technologically sophisticated militaries in the world. Without power, many Gazans will lose the ability to pump water from wells or treat the wounded in hospitals.

London CNN —TikTok is stepping up efforts to counter misinformation, incitement to violence and hate relating to the Israel-Hamas war on its online platform, it announced Sunday, days after the European Union (EU) warned social media companies they risked falling foul of the bloc’s content moderation laws. As the conflict escalates — Israel has blocked the provision of electricity, food, fuel and water to Gaza, and has been signaling it is preparing for a ground invasion of the area — millions have turned to social media for updates, while misinformation has proliferated on these sites. One recent TikTok video, seen by more than 300,000 users and reviewed by CNN, promoted conspiracy theories about the origins of the Hamas attack, including false claims that it was orchestrated by the media. Last week, the EU told social media companies they needed to better protect “children and teenagers from violent content and terrorist propaganda” on their platforms. SITRIYA, Israel (AP) — Rarely do rabbis spend the Sabbath counting bodies. But on Saturday, a week after Hamas militants blew easily past Israel’s fortified security fence and gunned down hundreds of Israelis — at music festivals, in their homes, in cars while trying to flee — Israel’s military rabbinate made an exception. At Shura military base in central Israel, bodies have been coming in faster than the rabbis can identify them. “Generally, Jewish law says that you cannot break the Sabbath for a dead person,” said Rabbi Israel Weiss, who is helping lead the operation. Nearly two decades later, the militant group is still in power in Gaza, and the rabbinate was again at work on the Sabbath.

And, to that end, is there a way to prevent Iran from emerging as the victor in this terrible war? The goals of terrorism are political, and the political ramifications of this conflict are global. Both Iran and the Palestinians have watched with alarm the growing ties between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Iran and Saudi Arabia recently established diplomatic relations, but the long-standing rivalry and mistrust between them, as the standard bearers of Islam’s two main divisions, Shiites and Sunnis, did not suddenly disappear.
