The Sos Enathos lead and zinc mine, extending 300 metres underground below lush vegetation, has been picked by the Rome government as its candidate to host the so-called Einstein Telescope (ET). Italy is betting that its 1.9-billion-euro ($2.09 billion)project can bring much-needed investment to the island of Sardinia, one of the country's poorest regions. Mirrors at the end of each tunnel will reflect laser beams whose lengths are affected by the passage of gravitational waves. "The mine has become the alternative to the mine," Mario Calia, the 63-year-old mayor of Lula, told Reuters. Calia, himself a former miner, said the project would leave Lula's unspoiled natural landscape untouched while bringing in investment.
The event helped train the Air Force to use roads in case runways aren't an option. But that didn't stop the US Air Force from using the roads to land several aircraft — including one of its biggest planes. An MQ-9 Reaper with the 2nd Special Operations Squadron lands on Highway 287 during Exercise Agile Chariot near Rawlins, Wyoming, April 30, 2023. Air Force planes — including the MC-130J and Warthog — have landed on stretches of highway in recent years in places like Michigan, Latvia, and Sweden. And the Air Force Special Operations Command has even explored modifications to the MC-130J to allow it to land in water.
While Ukraine has fewer guns firing fewer shells, it appear to be doing more damage than Russia. But while Ukraine has fewer guns firing fewer shells, they appear to be doing more damage even though, with some notable exceptions, they are using the same weapons as their Russian opponents. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated in February that Russia was firing around four times as many shells as Ukraine. This suggests an improvement of a factor of 7-10, which is roughly what we see in the ratios of artillery shells: casualties above. A vast number of Ukrainian drone videos show this process in operation.

Apple Watch Series 8 vs. Fitbit Sense 2: Battery lifeAntonio Villas-Boas/Rick Stella/InsiderOne of the main reasons you'd want the Fitbit Sense 2 over the Series 8 is its battery life. You can still buy the Apple Watch Series 3, even though Apple no longer supports it. For a budget Apple Watch with better value, we recommend the 2022 Apple Watch SE instead. Apple Watch SE (2022) The second-generation Apple Watch SE is Apple’s new reigning budget smartwatch. Antonio Villas-BoasThe 2022 Watch SE replaced the Series 3 as the entry-level Apple Watch. British smartphone firm Bullitt on Friday launched a new phone capable of sending text messages via space, joining a crowded race to commercialize satellite-enabled devices. They will have to have Bullitt Messenger — the firm's proprietary satellite messaging app — installed in order to reply. Satellite phones have been in the works for decades, but have not yet entered mainstream usage. Bullitt is also launching a Bluetooth accessory, the Motorola Defy Satellite Link, that lets any Android or iOS device connect to its Bullitt Satellite Messenger app, effectively enabling any phone to become a satellite phone. "The company is a trailblazer for satellite messaging but competition is snapping at its heels," Wood told CNBC.
Apple CEO Tim Cook needs to balance AI development with its ongoing supply chain issues. Apple CEO Tim Cook himself has said that AI "will affect every product and service we have." Delivering an interesting AI product is not the only problem Apple needs to address. Apple faced supply chain issues in 2021, delaying the delivery of the iPhone 14 Pro after protests around Covid-19 shutdowns temporarily closed its Chinese manufacturing hubs. The company has talked about diversifying its supply chain process, which could take decades.

Many customers took to Twitter to share updates about the service disruption, with several users saying they saw 'SOS' notifications on their phones. The U.S. wireless carrier has been adding thousands of wireless subscribers lately, thanks to discounts on smartphones, bundled offerings, industry-low plan prices and an edge in 5G. The carrier added 927,000 postpaid phone subscribers in the fourth quarter, the highest among its peers.

In the week leading up to the release of “SOS,” SZA suffered the fits and starts many artists experience before their projects premiere, though those bursts were sieved through her specific anxieties. SZA told me about “weird, negative” remarks people made to her as she was prepping “SOS” for release. When she speaks about album release dates, responses escalate quickly from ripple to tidal wave. In an interview last February, SZA said that her next album would be ready in time for summer. SZA and Punch traded surly tweets, and as it all went viral, a messy narrative was set: SZA and her label were at odds.

The state of California automatically sends ballots to all registered voters, who are then permitted either to vote by mail or in person. During the 2022 midterm elections in California 21.9 million ballots were sent out and 11.1 million people voted, leaving around 10.8 million ballots sent to voters who did not cast them. Posts on social media are sharing this figure alongside claims that it is indicative of election fraud. Some of the claims link to a Breitbart article that says 10.8 million midterm ballots were “unaccounted for” in California (here). All California registered voters receive ballots, and the percentage of those ballots that were cast was similar to turnout in past midterms.
[1/4] A member of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) looks at a migrant after he was rescued by the ship 'Geo Barents' during a search and rescue (SAR) operation in the Mediterranean Sea, January 25, 2023. La Spezia is the furthest and northernmost destination that Italy has assigned to an NGO ship. Forcing NGO ships to reach ever-more distant ports increases costs at a time when budgets are stretched by inflation and higher fuel costs following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Last month, the SOS Mediterranee NGO appealed for donations, saying fuel charges for its Ocean Viking rescue ship had increased by over 1 million euros during 2022. The new docking destinations policy adds to a December decree which forces NGO ships to request and head to a port "without delay" after each rescue, rather than continue looking for boats in distress.

Authorities say it's a miracle two people had only minor injuries after their vehicle plunged hundreds of feet off the road and into a canyon Tuesday in California. A man and a woman in their early 20s fell about 300 feet when their vehicle veered off the road into Monkey Canyon in Angeles National Forest, about 30 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. “Nearly all of the vehicles that go over the side of the road in that particular area turn out to be fatalities. Had it not been for the smartphone technology, Gilbert said, the two risked hypothermia, because temperatures were expected to drop into the 30s overnight. The sheriff’s department’s Special Enforcement Bureau tweeted dramatic video and photos of the rescue.
“I just want what’s mine,” SZA announces in “SOS,” the title song and opener of her second studio album. SZA’s music melts down styles — singing, rapping, rock, R&B, pop, folk, indie-rock, electronica — to ponder and interrogate her conflicting impulses. Solána Rowe, who records as SZA, has only two official studio albums in a decade-long career. “SOS” was preceded by “Ctrl,” which she originally released in 2017 but expanded by seven new songs in June 2022. Along the way, SZA, 33, has moved from the left-field electronic experiments of her early EPs to savvy but still probing pop, as the mainstream bends toward her ideas.

More than 500 migrants arrive in Italy as rescue ships dock
  + stars: | 2022-12-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
ROME, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Italy, which has vowed a tough line on immigration, took in more than 500 migrants on Sunday as two charity rescue ships were allowed to dock at ports in the south of the country after several days at sea in bad weather. The Geo Barents ship, operated by the Doctors without Borders (MSF) charity and which had 248 migrants aboard, arrived in Salerno in the southwestern region of Campania, MSF said. On the other side of the country, the Humanity 1, another rescue vessel run by the charity SOS Humanity, docked in the port city of Bari after the Italian authorities agreed to grant it permission. It accuses the charity ships of making it easier for economic migrants to reach Italy and playing into the hands of people traffickers. On Wednesday, a baby was born on the same vessel and later flown with his mother and three siblings to Italy.
