America is doing retirement all wrong

When we think of retirement, we often think of endless leisure and zero responsibility. Americans are doing retirement all wrong. Anqi Chen, a senior research economist at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, says people are addressing both by simply working longer. But returning to your old line of work is hardly the only way to stay emotionally and intellectually fulfilled in retirement. A lot of people have drawn their sense of purpose or identity from work, and they might want to continue doing so through jobs or volunteering in retirement, she says.

Luigi Mangione, 26, sat alone at a table with a laptop and a backpack, according to police who arrested him at McDonald’s. When they told the man he was under a police investigation, he gave officers his real name: Luigi Mangione. Asked why he had used a false name, the suspect replied, “I clearly shouldn’t have,” according to the complaint. Police found “a black 3D-printed pistol” with a loaded Glock magazine and a “black silencer” that was also 3D-printed in his backpack, according to the criminal complaint. After the shooting, the suspect had traveled between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, making stops in between, before his capture on Monday, according to Pennsylvania Gov.

New York CNN —2024 may not have been the best or worst year ever for McDonald’s — but it was certainly a memorable one. Another Pennsylvania McDonald’s became the backdrop for the culmination of a massive manhunt this week, when an employee at an Altoona location alerted police to a patron who resembled the suspected gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare’s CEO in Manhattan last week. In that way, McDonald’s became a kind of scapegoat for people who were exhausted of stretching their budgets to afford food and suspecting (not without reason) that corporate greed was at least partly to blame. “We’re always living in some way with McDonald’s,” she noted. “And I think in a lot of ways, we’re all working for McDonald’s — whether we work in a restaurant or not.”

When we think of retirement, we often think of endless leisure and zero responsibility. But research suggests a life of pure leisure doesn't make you happier or healthier. About a third of American adults have said they struggled in transitioning to a life without work, and sedentary lifestyles are associated with earlier death. Anqi Chen, a senior research economist at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, says people are addressing both by simply working longer. Shannon Stapleton | ReutersThe New York Attorney General's Office on Tuesday rejected a demand from Donald Trump's lawyer to drop the massive civil business fraud case that has put the president-elect on the hook for more than $480 million in fines. But there is "no merit" to that claim, Vale wrote Tuesday. And Trump's upcoming inauguration, she wrote, "has no bearing" on the outcome of the trial or his ongoing efforts to challenge the judgment. The decision by special counsel Jack Smith to dismiss his two federal cases against Trump, and the move to indefinitely delay Trump's criminal hush money case, "are irrelevant here," Vale wrote. Optimism about household finances hit a multiyear high following Donald Trump’s presidential election victory in November, according to a New York Federal Reserve survey released Monday. The results follow Trump’s Nov. 5 victory that will send him back to the White House for a second nonconsecutive term. Even with the increase in sentiment, consumers’ inflation outlook is still cautious, according to the New York Fed Survey. Though Trump has made little mention of attacking the government’s debt and deficit load, the outlook there improved as well. The median expectation for growth in government debt was at 6.2%, down 2.3 percentage points from October and the lowest level since February 2020.

Homicide rates are nearly four times as those in the United States, according to Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography. In the United States, you can apply at the Netherlands embassy in Washington or at the consulates-general in Miami, New York or San Francisco. In addition, as with Costa Rica, Panama also does not have a tax treaty with the United States. It’s also a long way away from the United States, which can be tricky for visits to see loved ones. Cons: As is the case in Mexico and other countries with large expat communities, there’s growing backlash against the influx of foreigners, especially Americans, and especially in Lisbon.
