[1/5] Workers prepare a plant-based polony used as an alternative or meat substitute at meat processor Feinschmecker, in Germiston, in the East Rand region of Johannesburg, South Africa, October 11, 2022. That could be heartening for climate scientists, who say shifting diets from emissions-heavy meat and dairy towards more plant-based foods is vital to the fight against climate change. Plant-based meat substitutes are growing by 6.5% a year and sales are expected to reach $561 million by 2023, according to Research and Markets - more than half Africa's share of a global market forecast to hit $162 billion by 2030. But the popularity of veggie alternatives would have been unthinkable even a decade ago and the market is outstripping forecast growth for meat. She gave up meat over climate concerns and her diabetes.
Nov 3 (Reuters) - Methane emissions have emerged as a top threat to the global climate, with scientists and policymakers calling for aggressive action to curb the output. At last year's U.N. climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, more than 100 countries pledged a 30% cut from 2020 methane emissions levels by 2030. "If you're interested in the climate impacts, we'll be experiencing in 2050 ... you'd be absolutely screaming about methane emissions." WHERE IT COMES FROMThree-fifths of the world's estimated methane emissions are from human activity; the rest are from natural sources like swamps. The European Union recently endorsed labeling some natural gas projects as "green" in a major boost to the industry.

Earlier on Wednesday, the AU had invited media to what it described as a briefing by Obasanjo. It was only when the event began, about three hours behind schedule, that it became clear a truce was about to be signed. Implementation of the peace agreement signed today is critical for its success," said Obasanjo, adding that this would be supervised and monitored by a high-level AU panel. Neither Eritrea nor the regional forces participated in the talks in South Africa and there was no mention at Wednesday's ceremony of whether they would abide by the truce.
Giant wind turbines dot the landscape at the Darling Wind Power national demonstration project near Cape Town July 17, 2009. The project is the country's first independent wind power producer and currently has four turbines, with plans for another six. South Africa is also seeking to become a hub for so-called green hydrogen and electric vehicle manufacturing -- both of which could attract significant private sector investment. Coal makes up four-fifths of South Africa's power generation, so turning state utility Eskom to renewables is a priority for the government. Moving South Africa's economy into greener energy will require vast funds in the longer term, with some analysts estimating at least $250 billion over the next three decades.
Oct 18 (Reuters) - Hasbro Inc (HAS.O) missed quarterly profit estimates on Tuesday as the company's move to raise prices to offset surging commodity costs led inflation-weary customers to buy fewer toys and games. "There is still indications of fairly strong demand for toys," Linda Bolton Weiser, analyst at D.A. Still, Hasbro saw its net revenue fall 15% to $1.68 billion in the third quarter ended Sept. 25, partly dented by a stronger dollar. Shares of the 'Magic: The Gathering' maker were down about 2% in morning trading. Oct 18 (Reuters) - Toymaker Hasbro Inc (HAS.O) reported a 28% fall in third-quarter earnings on Tuesday as inflation-hit consumers were further discouraged by price hikes. Earlier in October, Hasbro cut its fiscal 2022 sales forecast, citing a stronger dollar and a slowdown in demand. "As expected, the third quarter is our most difficult comparison and was further impacted by increasing price sensitivity for the average consumer," Hasbro Chief Executive Officer Chris Cocks said. The company reported adjusted net earnings of $196.2 million, or $1.42 per share, in the third quarter ended Sept. 25, compared with $271.2 million, or $1.96 per share, a year earlier. Hasbro defines discretionary

NEW YORK, Oct 18 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Hasbro (HAS.O) toys are absolutely, positively not essential. Chief Executive Chris Cocks partly attributed the decline to over-ordering in the second quarter. Take the gains in that quarter and move them to the third quarter, and sales would’ve still fallen 14% year-over-year. Meantime prices are rising dramatically, and though Hasbro tried to pass on some of those costs, people in the market for Magic: The Gathering and Play-Doh pulled back spending. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
Hasbro reported earnings Tuesday morning that fell below analysts' expectations as inflation weighed on consumers. The toy maker faced tough comparisons in the third quarter, but surging prices added to the pressure. Revenue fell 15% compared to the period last year, led by a 35% decrease in entertainment revenue. "Magic: The Gathering" is a digital and trading card game that has grown into the company's first $1 billion brand. The 30th anniversary of the game occurs in the fourth quarter of this fiscal year.
Hasbro — Shares of the toy company dipped 2.3% after the company reported third-quarter earnings that missed expectations. Salesforce — Salesforce shares gained 5.2% after Starboard Value revealed to CNBC that it has taken a "significant" stake in the software giant. Carnival Corporation — Shares of the cruise company jumped more than 12% after one of Carnival's subsidiaries began an offering of $1.25 billion of senior priority notes due 2028. Goldman Sachs — Goldman Sachs rallied 3% after beating third-quarter analyst expectations for profit and revenue on better-than-expected trading results. Lockheed Martin — Shares of the aerospace company jumped 8.5% after Lockheed reported third-quarter earnings of $6.87 per share excluding items, which was higher than a Refinitiv estimate of $6.66 per share.

Methane, the main component of natural gas, can leak from pipelines and drill sites, and is also emitted from farming and food waste. Scientists normally compare the warming effects of methane and carbon dioxide over one century, and over that timescale methane is 28 times worse. "If you're interested in the climate impacts we'll be experiencing in 2050 ... you'd be absolutely screaming about methane emissions." WHERE IT COMES FROMThree-fifths of the world's estimated methane emissions are from human activity; the rest, from natural sources like swamps. George Haj of the bank employees syndicate said the holdups were misguiding anger that should be directed at the Lebanese state, which was most to blame for the crisis, and noted some 6,000 bank employees had lost their jobs since it began. Authorities have condemned the holdups and say they are preparing a security plan for banks. "They are all in cahoots to steal from us and leave us to go hungry and die slowly," she said. To aid her escape, Hafiz posted on Facebook that she was already at the airport and on her way to Istanbul. Abdallah Al-Saii, an acquaintance of Hafiz who held up a bank in January to get some $50,000 of his own savings, said more hold-ups were coming.
