China's National Bureau of Statistics on Friday reported third-quarter GDP growth of 4.6% year on year, slightly exceeding the 4.5% expected by economists polled by Reuters. China on Friday reported better-than-expected retail sales and industrial production for September. Retail sales grew 3.2% from a year ago, better than the 2.5% growth estimated by analysts in an LSEG poll, the National Bureau of Statistics said. Meanwhile, industrial production expanded 5.4% in September from a year ago, more than the 4.5% expected by analysts. He noted that year-to-date retail sales data showed "cautious sentiment among consumers." From January to September, retail sales grew 3.35%, nearly same as the growth reported for January through August at 3.36%.

Netflix shares jumped Friday after the media streaming giant reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that beat expectations. Shares of Netflix were up 5.4% in U.S. premarket trading as of 4:39 a.m. Netflix reported earnings per share of $5.40 for the three-month period ending Sept. 30, surpassing the $5.12 LSEG consensus estimate. Revenues also beat expectations, coming in at $9.83 billion, above the $9.77 billion anticipated by analysts. Crucially, Netflix saw momentum in its ad-supported membership tier, which jumped 35% quarter-over-quarter.

A Georgia grand jury indicted a teenage boy and his father on dozens of charges, including murder, in connection with a mass shooting last month that killed four people at Apalachee High School, officials said Thursday. His father, Colin Gray, was indicted on 29 counts, including second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children, involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct, according to records from the Barrow County District Attorney's Office. Meta is ramping up its efforts to fight sextortion on Instagram with the launch of new features that are designed to help prevent young users from getting blackmailed into sharing nude photos. Starting Thursday, Instagram will automatically block follow requests sent to teenage users from accounts that display certain “scammy behaviors,” according to Meta. At a Senate online child safety hearing in January, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized to parents who said Instagram contributed to their children’s suicides or exploitation. Last month, Meta announced it will begin automatically placing all users under 18 into “teen accounts” with stricter privacy settings. “If they really want to promote meaningful change and online safety for kids and teens, they can stop opposing federal solutions like the Kids Online Safety Act,” Hinkle said.
