CNN —Nearly 62,000 people died heat-related deaths last year during Europe’s hottest summer on record, a new study has found — more heartbreaking evidence that heat is a silent killer, and its victims are vastly under-counted. Of the nearly 62,000 deaths analyzed, heat-related mortality rate was 63% higher in women than in men. “The acceleration of warming observed over the last 10 years underlines the urgent need to reassess and substantially strengthen prevention plans,” Achebak said. Heat deaths have outpaced hurricane deaths in the country by more than 8-to-1 over the past decade, according to data tracked by the National Weather Service. Yet the United States’ heat mortality numbers would suggest that far fewer people are dying from heat than in Europe.

The far-left Sumar party would win 13%, just ahead of Vox with 12.6%, the poll found ahead of the election on July 23. Vox - the PP's most likely coalition ally - would win between 32 and 39 seats. If the results of the poll are correct, it means that a right-wing coalition of the PP and Vox would together win up to 180 seats, enough for an absolute majority. All polls have so far predicted that the PP would win the most votes in the elections.

MADRID, July 7 (Reuters) - Telefonica (TEF.MC) has sold a 54% stake in its fibre optic network in Peru to U.S. private equity fund KKR (KKR.N) and 10% to Entel's (ENTEL.SN) local business, the Spanish telecoms group said on Friday, adding that it will retain the remaining 36%. In many markets, the company has separated the infrastructure into different units to maximise the value of its disposed assets. The Spanish company did not disclose the value of the transaction but said the deal would cut its debt by 200 million euros ($217.8 million). The transaction valued 100% of the unit at about 550 million euros, including debt, according to a banking source close to the deal. The new company, Pangeaco, will combine the existing fibre optic network in Peru from Telefonica and Entel, KKR firm said in a separate statement.

MADRID, July 7 (Reuters) - U.S. chipmaker Broadcom (AVGO.O) will invest in a European Union-funded programme to develop a semiconductor industry in Spain, Chief Executive Charlie Kawwas said late on Thursday. "Excited to announce our decision to invest in Spain's semiconductor ecosystem under their semiconductor support program," Kawwas said on his Twitter account. The project in which Broadcom would be involved could be worth $1 billion, the Spanish economy ministry said in an emailed statement. Broadcom did not say how much it would invest. Prior to Broadcom, the Spanish government had said U.S. tech giant Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO.O) was planning to open a new chip design centre in the northeastern Spanish city of Barcelona.

Güler is one of the most highly sought-after prospects in the sport and his signing was rumored to be a contest between numerous big-name teams. MADRID, July 7 (Reuters) - Spain's far-right party Vox proposed abolishing the current laws allowing abortion and euthanasia, according to its election manifesto published on Friday. In December, Spain's parliament passed a sexual and reproductive health law that allows girls aged 16 and 17 to undergo abortions without parental consent. The law also says teenagers aged 14-16 would still need approval from parents or guardians. The hard-right party pledged a naval blockade to prevent illegal migrants crossing the sea from Africa in boats to land on Spanish shores. Vox, which is the third largest party in the Spanish parliament with 52 lawmakers, is a possible coalition ally of the conservative People's Party (PP), which has led polls so far ahead of the ruling Socialist Party.
