JERUSALEM, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday called on Israel to join the fight against Russia and repeated a request for Israeli air defense systems. Zelenskiy said in a video speech to a conference for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Or with those who turn a blind eye to Russian terror, even when the cost of continued terror is the complete destruction of global security," he said. Republican U.S. Representative Mike Turner told reporters on a conference call after he travelled to Ukraine that he was "personally disappointed" with Israel. Zelenskiy said that was not enough and asked that Israeli leaders reconsider sending air defenses as well.
WASHINGTON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Thirty liberal U.S. congressional Democrats urged President Joe Biden on Monday to shift his strategy for the Russia-Ukraine war by pursuing a negotiated settlement along with his current provision of military and economic support to Kyiv. Some Republicans have warned there could be tighter control of funding for Ukraine if their party wins control of Congress. The letter comes with just two weeks to go before Nov. 8 U.S. mid-term elections that will determine which party controls Congress. House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy recently said there will be no "blank check" for Ukraine if Republicans win control of the chamber from Biden's fellow Democrats, raising concerns that Republicans might choke off Ukraine aid. However, analysts said the party was more likely to slow it down or pare it back.

Hurricane Roslyn was expected to deliver a treacherous storm surge to parts of Mexico Sunday after plowing over the Pacific as a powerful Category 4 storm just offshore from the resort of Puerto Vallarta. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said early Sunday that Roslyn had become “extremely dangerous” with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. The storm was forecast “to bring damaging winds, a life-threatening storm surge and flooding rains to portions of west-central Mexico today,” the hurricane center said at 12 a.m. Sunday. Everything is calm, it’s all normal,” said Jaime Cantón, a receptionist at the Casa Maria hotel in Puerto Vallarta. and the U.S. hurricane center warned of dangerous storm surge along the coast, as well as 4 to 6 inches of rain.
It's long been a dream of satellite communications visionaries, but bulky, specialized and typically expensive satellite phones fell short of mass appeal. While SpaceX has launched more than 3,000 first generation satellites so far, adding a direct-to-phone service will require thousands more. Private venture Lynk Global likewise aims to provide a cell tower in space from satellites, with plans for a constellation of several thousand in a few years. And while some build out satellite networks, other major players are eyeing Earth-bound innovations, with systems dependent on a specialized antenna in phones. In partnership with Globalstar , the feature allows users to send compressed text messages from iPhone 14s via satellites.
WASHINGTON, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump was issued an order on Friday to testify under oath and provide documents to the House of Representatives committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters. Such testimony could be made public and become part of a final report by the special panel. Committee members have not said how they will proceed if Trump disregards his subpoena. If the select committee's subpoena is ignored, the committee would vote to refer the issue to the full House. The House Jan. 6 select committee has been investigating the attack on the Capitol for more than a year.

All 57 House votes against a bill providing more than $40 billion for Ukraine in May came from Republicans. Anderson said some Republicans have viewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's administration as corrupt since Trump's first impeachment trial. House Democrats voted to impeach Trump in 2019 on charges he held up military aid for Kyiv to put pressure on Zelenskiy to investigate one of Biden's sons. Several defense industry executives said they viewed the Republican comments on Ukraine aid as political rhetoric ahead of the midterms, not a threat. A Reuters/Ipsos opinion survey this month showed 73% of Americans felt the United States should continue to support Kyiv.
MADRID, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Spanish lenders are open to extending loan repayments for up to five years for vulnerable households that experience a rise of at least 30% in variable mortgage costs, a draft of the proposal seen by Reuters on Thursday showed. Banks would not have to automatically set aside provisions as a consequence of the loan extensions, according to the draft. "Households earning not more than 24,300 euros a year would be eligible to extend the lifespan of mortgage repayments," one of the sources said on Wednesday. Once the extension of the mortgage term to final maturity has been agreed, the outstanding loan would continue to be repaid in new instalments, according to the draft. "As it stands with this proposal, you may even end up paying more interest in the long term", Suarez said.

MADRID, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Spanish lenders are open to extending loan repayments for vulnerable households that experience a rise of at least 30% in variable mortgage costs, three sources with knowledge of the matter said on Wednesday. The proposal is part of a wider set of measures aimed at helping exposed families cope with an increase in interest rates and rising cost of living that banks are discussing with government. "Households earning not more than 24,300 euros a year would be eligible to extend the lifespan of mortgage repayments," one of the sources said. The banking association AEB and the savings banks association CECA declined to comment. "As it stands with this proposal, you may even end up paying more interest in the long term", Suarez said.
BERLIN, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Germany's chemical and pharmaceutical industry agreed on two wage hikes of 3.25% each for its workers on Tuesday, one for the beginning of 2023 and the other a year later. While trade union IG BCE had not published a specific demand, the industry, which is among those most heavily affected by surging energy costs, managed to keep the wage agreement well below inflation in the region. German public sector unions this month demanded a 10.5% wage increase, or at least 500 euros more per month, over a year for some 2.5 million workers. The larger metal engineering sector is also in negotiations, with the trade union pushing employers to respond to its demand for 8% higher wages. Workers' purchasing power has already taken a hit, with German consumer price inflation at almost 11% in September.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California’s governor blocked the parole of Charles Manson follower Patricia Krenwinkel on Friday, more than five decades after she scrawled “Helter Skelter” on a wall using the blood of one of their victims. Gavin Newsom said Krenwinkel, now 74, is still too much of a public safety risk to be freed. Newsom has previously rejected parole recommendations for other followers of Manson, who died in prison in 2017. She forced the other women in the cult to obey Mr. Manson, and prevented them from escaping when they tried to leave,” he said. “We all come from homes with problems and didn’t decide to go out and brutally kill seven strangers,” Tate told parole officials.
When Patricia M. Cloherty was offered a job at a venture-capital firm in 1969, she had to ask friends what that business, little known at the time, was all about. She concluded it was a David vs. Goliath affair, using small amounts of capital to fund startups that could take on corporate behemoths. As a former Peace Corps volunteer, she had aspired to work for an international development agency but concluded that those institutions were unlikely to send a woman overseas. So she decided to accept the offer of a research job at a venture-capital firm headed by Alan Patricof .

WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives committee investigating the Jan 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump held a hearing on its latest findings on Thursday. Here are two key takeaways. SECRET SERVICE KNEW ABOUT PLANNED ATTACKNew evidence from the Secret Service obtained by the committee shows the agency knew about the high likelihood of an attack on the Capitol days ahead of Jan 6, 2021. Democratic Representative Adam Schiff said senior advisers received an intelligence summary that included material indicating that certain people would be traveling to Washington, D.C., making plans to attack the Capitol building. "They think that they will have a large enough group to march into DC armed and will outnumber the police so they can't be stopped," an email from the Secret Service sent on Dec. 26, 2020, read.

WASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate formally kicked off debate on Tuesday on the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act, a must-pass $817 billion bill setting policy for the Pentagon and including provisions to compete with China and Russia and boost Taiwan and Ukraine. Environmental non-profits had urged shareholders to vote against CEO Jon Moeller as chairman, preferring an independent chair instead, and also opposed two directors, Angela Braly and Patricia Woertz. The non-profits said that Cincinnati-based P&G has taken "insufficient action" to deal with the risks related to deforestation. Some investors such as the New York State Common Retirement Fund and New York City pensions backed the environmentalists' efforts. Moeller said that P&G has products like Tide Pods at multiple price points, spanning from a Tide Power Pod at 50 cents to a Tide Simply Pod at 20 cents. More than 100 shareholders attended the virtual meeting, Moeller said.
"The United States must immediately freeze all aspects of our cooperation with Saudi Arabia, including any arms sales and security cooperation beyond what is absolutely necessary to defend U.S. personnel and interests," Senator Bob Menendez said in a statement. "As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I will not green-light any cooperation with Riyadh until the Kingdom reassesses its position with respect to the war in Ukraine. "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia chose the latter in a terrible decision driven by economic self-interest." The leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs committees review major international arms deals, which generally do not go ahead without their approval. Latinos are underrepresented in the media industry workforce across film, radio, television, newspapers and digital platforms, according to the report. Latinos are 19% of the nation's population, almost 1 in 5 Americans, and 18% of workers outside the media industry. The largest percentage of Hispanic media industry workers were employed in service worker positions (19%) — which include food, cleaning and personal and protective services, according to the latest available reports submitted by media companies to the U.S. In positions that can influence the content audiences consume, Latinos were far less represented: They made up only 7% of professional media industry positions such as actors, producers, directors, writers, reporters and editors. When Latinos did see themselves represented in content, they felt "it was inaccurate" in most cases, de Armas said.
