According to most polls, India’s election was a foregone conclusion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right-wing, Hindu-nationalist alliance was expected to secure a supermajority – and with it the power to enact radical change unopposed. To Modi’s critics and opponents, India was on the fast track to becoming a de-facto one-party state. Going into this election, Modi had set a goal of winning 400 seats in the lower house of parliament, or Lok Sabha. The BJP’s inability to secure an outright majority “pricks the bubble of Modi’s authority,” wrote political scientist Pratap Bhanu Mehta Tuesday night.

A Georgia appeals court on Wednesday halted the criminal election case against Donald Trump in the state pending the outcome of his bid to disqualify the district attorney prosecuting the former president. The order by the Georgia Court of Appeals all but guarantees that Trump and eight co-defendants in the case will not stand trial before the November presidential election, where Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee. The appeals court said it would hear arguments on Oct. 4 on Trump's effort to boot Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the case. The appeals court must rule on the question by March 14, 2025, according to the court's website. The appeals court order Wednesday halting the case also applies to Rudy Giuliani, David Shafer, Robert Cheeley, Michael Roman, Mark Meadows, Cathy Latham, Jeffrey Clark and Harrison Floyd.

Israel organized and paid for an influence campaign last year targeting U.S. lawmakers and the American public with pro-Israel messaging, as it aimed to foster support for its actions in the war with Gaza, according to officials involved in the effort and documents related to the operation. The covert campaign was commissioned by Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs, a government body that connects Jews around the world with the State of Israel, four Israeli officials said. The campaign began in October and remains active on the platform X. At its peak, it used hundreds of fake accounts that posed as real Americans on X, Facebook and Instagram to post pro-Israel comments. The campaign also created three fake English-language news sites featuring pro-Israel articles.

But much more must be done and, as with most change, it’s important to start by admitting there’s a problem. The phenomenon of Democrats dismissing the polls in favor of misplaced optimism has been termed “hopium” by data journalist Nate Silver. Polling denial is not unanimous in the party, as many Democrats are reportedly in a full-blown “freakout” over Biden’s chances. It’s essential they admit the polling is correct, because if Biden is winning, there is little need to change course. This means these groups likely share top concerns with moderate voters generally.

Russia has poured scorn on Ukraine's attempts to invite its former Soviet allies to a forthcoming peace summit in Switzerland, saying the invitation had been rejected by its neighbors. "Kyiv and its Western handlers actively sought to attract representatives from the countries of the global South and East. Russia jealously guards its influence over the CIS, which includes Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Meanwhile, Western countries have tried to strengthen their relations with several member countries of CIS, much to Russia's disdain. Russia is sensitive over what it sees as Western encroachment on its own backyard, particularly as the CIS' membership has dwindled in recent years.

Other Trump cases are in suspended animationTwo federal cases against Trump, in which he’s also pleaded not guilty, are in a holding pattern. At the same time, multiple disputes in pre-trial motions have put the looming federal trial in Florida over Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents into suspended animation. But if Trump wins, he could appoint an attorney general who could halt the federal cases in their tracks. Garland is also likely to face scrutiny over the Hunter Biden trial. Republicans celebrated when a plea deal, which they saw as “sweetheart” treatment for Hunter Biden, collapsed in court.

CNN —Sales of new electric vehicles have started to slow, but the opposite is happening with used EVs. The used car sales website Carvana saw its used EV sales more than double since last year. While increases in used EV sales are huge, they still make up a small portion of overall used vehicle sales. Used EVs still cost more, on average, than used gas-powered vehicles, but they cost a lot less than new EVs. While prices for new EVs average around $63,000, prices for used ones average around $36,000, according to Cars.com.

Wisconsin is the latest state to bring charges against people connected to the former president involved in the broad effort to overturn the presidential election results. “We hereby reaffirm that Joseph R. Biden, Jr. won the 2020 presidential election and that we were not the duly elected presidential electors for the State of Wisconsin for the 2020 presidential election,” a portion of their statement said. “We oppose any attempt to undermine the public’s faith in the ultimate results of the 2020 presidential election.”Chesebro was previously charged, and pleaded guilty, in the Georgia probe. This undercut his testimony to state prosecutors in which he said the fake electors were contingent on winning the litigation. Chesebro discussed the episode with Wisconsin investigators when he sat for an interview as part of the attorney general’s probe into the fake electors plot.

CNN —Constance Glantz had been in a nursing home – in hospice care. No evidence of criminal intent had been found, Chief Deputy Ben Houchin told reporters. She again was pronounced dead, Houchin said later, adding an autopsy was conducted Tuesday morning. The funeral home and the nursing home have been “totally cooperative” with the sheriff’s office investigation, Houchin said.

CNN —Joe Biden is pushing progressives who are already sour on his presidency to the limit with a tough new executive action barring most asylum applications from migrants crossing the US-Mexico border illegally. Of all issues tested, Biden recorded his lowest approval rating on immigration in a CNN poll in February — just 30%. Progressives face their own dilemmaBiden would never say it bluntly in public, but his gamble with progressives carries an implicit question — where else are they going to go? Some Haley supporters on Tuesday welcomed Biden’s immigration actions, CNN’s Kit Maher reported. “While many Haley voters continue to have policy differences, this common-sense action is a clear step in the right direction to address one of the top priorities of many Haley voters,” the Haley Voters Working Group, a coalition of approximately 25 conservative Haley supporters, posted on X.

In Georgia, protesters waving European Union flags have rallied against what they see as their pro-Russia leaders. Moldova’s government is pushing to join the bloc, enraging citizens hoping for closer relations with Moscow. Fueled in part by the Ukraine war, tensions have been mounting within some of the former lands of the Soviet Union, pitting those favoring closer relations with Russia against those orientated more toward Europe. Many of those tensions predate the war, rooted in longstanding domestic struggles over power, money and other issues, but they have been amplified by geopolitics, with both Russia and the West pushing countries to choose a side. Across the former Soviet Union “the whole context is now shaped by how the Ukraine war has radicalized competition between Russia and the West,” said Gerard Toal, author of “Near Abroad,” a study of Russia’s relations with former Soviet territories.

With a one-page order, the Georgia Court of Appeals on Monday made it all the more likely that Donald J. Trump will not face a criminal trial in the state before he faces off against President Biden in the November election. That suggests that the matter almost certainly will not be resolved in time for a trial to start before the election. While the court does not have to hear arguments on the appeal, lawyers for Mr. Trump and another defendant said they would ask it to do so. Anthony Michael Kreis, a law professor at Georgia State University, said it was “pretty highly likely” that the court would agree to oral arguments, given the complexity of the issues. The delay in setting a trial date represents a major victory for Mr. Trump.

Adding to the concerns about supporters inciting or committing violence to avenge Trump are comments from Trump’s allies since the verdict. Will Trump’s smears of the verdict and his “breaking point” language escalate those threats and even potentially lead to violence from Trump’s supporters? One of Trump’s supporters who vowed to “not tolerate” the Mar-a-Lago search attacked an FBI field office, resulting in his death. Will Trump encourage protests outside of the New York courthouse on July 11, when he’s scheduled to be sentenced? But one thing is certain: Trump now understands he is no longer Teflon and that he could end up in prison.

Perhaps the last thing the market needs is another shady financial product that pushes low-income Americans into homes they can’t afford, under terms that could bankrupt them. The zero-down mortgage is making a comeback, my colleague Matt Egan reports. And honestly, when has the value of the housing market ever gone anywhere but up up up up? The housing market, as we all remember from “The Big Short,” does not always go up. One way for motivated buyers to hunt for a lower mortgage rate is buy someone else’s.
