A serendipitous moment, a NASA experiment, and frantic, innovative software engineering rescued the company's Odysseus lander from what could have been a catastrophic error — a switch that didn't get flipped before launch. NASA TVIt was a "spicy" landing, Altemus said. AdvertisementThe Houston-based company flew Odysseus, which is its Nova-C-model lander, to the moon on a $118 million NASA contract. Its success marks the first commercial moon landing ever and NASA's first return to the lunar surface since 1972. It was risky — the NASA lasers were on the lander to test whether they worked in space at all — but it was better than nothing.

Microsoft offered to sell its Bing search engine to Apple in 2018, Google said in a court filing earlier this month. In the fourth quarter, Microsoft generated $3.2 billion from search and news advertising, while Google search and other revenue totaled $48 billion. Google said in its filing that when Microsoft reached out to Apple in 2018, emphasizing gains in Bing's quality, Microsoft offered to either sell Bing to Apple or establish a Bing-related joint venture with the company. Google said Apple CEO Tim Cook sent an email to Apple executives about the assessment of Bing, but his remarks are redacted in the filing. Cue testified that "if Apple did not receive the massive payments it sought from Google, Apple would have developed its own search engine," the Justice Department asserted in its filing.

Workplace conflict often looks like high school drama, according to consultant Rosalind Wiseman. Wiseman is no stranger to teen drama — in fact, she literally wrote the book on it. The corporate world and high school aren't the same, but the similarities are striking"The answer that I should say is that, 'Oh, adults are so much more mature than kids,'" she told Business Insider when asked about how workplace drama compares to high school. Wiseman said workplace drama tends to look different than what you see in high school — teens can be far more "crass" — but the levels of sophistication in which the conflicts and undermining play out can be similar. AdvertisementWhatever the conflict, adults can end up feeling similar to high schoolers — excluded, taken advantage of, or even bullied.

NATO states' increased defense spending in recent years has little to do with Trump, experts told BI. NATO spending has indeed accelerated since Trump entered politics. Knowing if you're in a practical, emotional, or social conversation helps you connect. Be prepared for the conversation type to shift in one sittingVery often, a conversation can cycle through different types as you keep talking, according to Duhigg. "It's because I was having an emotional conversation and she was having a practical conversation," he said. Ask deeper questions to find the conversation typeWhen in doubt about the conversation type, just ask. Otherwise, you'd be initiating a practical conversation when they might be seeking an emotional one.

CFOTO | Future Publishing | Getty ImagesPolicymakers are doing little to soothe concerns surrounding China's ailing economy, Brian McCarthy, chief strategist at Macrolens told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" on Wednesday. The latest monetary policy announcement from the People's Bank of China (PBOC) saw the central bank cut the benchmark 5-year loan prime rate by 25 basis points earlier this week. Many observers saw the move as an effort to boost the country's struggling property market, as the majority of mortgages are pegged to this rate. The 5-year loan prime rate cut was a more "aggressive" move within these decisions, he added.

In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte brought a slew of savants — geologists, engineers, and other scientists — on his unsuccessful attempt to take over Egypt. A collection of mummified animals that the scholars brought back from Egypt seemed to hold the key to the question of species transformation. Walmart quietly reduced its store count in 2023 even though the company was doing really well. In addition to closing underperforming stores, the retailer sold at least 79 small-format locations. Given what Walmart has planned for the next few years, the move away from smaller locations makes sense. "Walmart has always struggled with smaller stores," Saunders said.
