WASHINGTON — Kamala Harris is launching a seven-figure ad blitz about health care targeting Donald Trump’s calls to replace the Affordable Care Act with a mystery plan he hasn’t yet released. And the Harris campaign said it plans to follow it up with more health care-focused ads in the future. Asked when he will release his health care plan, the Trump campaign didn’t say. Health care was a major boon to Democrats in the 2018 and 2020 elections, according to exit polls, which said many voters prioritized health care and preferred Democrats over the GOP by wide margins. A recent Associated Press national survey found that voters trust Harris to handle health care over Trump by 50% to 30%.

TOKYO — Japan’s new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Tuesday unveiled his cabinet as he seeks to heal party divisions and secure a national mandate with an Oct. 27 snap election. The 67-year-old former defense minister, who last week won a close-fought contest to lead the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was confirmed earlier in the day as prime minister by parliament. In his victory speech on Friday, Ishiba spoke about the need to beef up Japan’s security after recent territorial incursions by Chinese and Russian military vessels. Five of the lawmakers who contested the leadership race with him have not been included in his government nor given key party jobs. But despite its troubles, the LDP, which has ruled Japan for most of the post-war era, remains likely to hold on to power in the upcoming election given Japan’s weak opposition.

The central clash in the pivotal Senate race in Montana — and the fight for control of the Senate itself — was on full display Monday night as Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican Tim Sheehy faced off in a heated debate. Like other vulnerable Senate Democrats, Tester tried to make it personal — touting his bipartisan bona fides, highlighting his own connections to his red-leaning state and suggesting his opponent cannot be trusted. Montana is the party’s next top target, with Tester running for re-election in a state Trump won by 16 points in 2020. James Richmond, 50, an IT consultant and voter in Helena, pointed to those comments in explaining why he plans to support Sheehy, despite supporting Tester’s work for veterans. An AARP poll conducted in late August found Sheehy leading Tester by 6 points, 55% to 49%.

Vice presidential nominees traditionally play the role of attack dog for the top of their tickets – in this case, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump. Walz earned the Democratic vice presidential nod in part because of his branding of the GOP ticket as “weird” in television interviews that served as semi-auditions for the role. Vance and Trump, meanwhile, have at times struggled to get on the same page on the issue of abortion. Walz could play the part Biden once did in a debate against another rising young conservative, when the then-vice president stymied Mitt Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan in a crucial 2012 debate. CNN —All signs suggest that the partisan divide over changing gender roles in society could widen even further in the 2024 election, adding a new source of uncertainty to a contest already on a knife’s edge. That was only the latest example of his campaign signaling its support for traditional gender roles. “The messaging on gender coming out of the campaign broadly is very much about reaffirming traditional roles for women and for men,” Cassese said. In PRRI polling this year, nearly half of Republicans agreed with two absolutist statements about gender roles. His problem is that most voters outside the core GOP coalition are generally comfortable with the changes in gender roles and family dynamics since the “Father Knows Best” era in the 1950s.

CNN —A Georgia judge signaled Tuesday that he sees a need to bring clarity to the meaning of a “vague” new election certification rule approved by Donald Trump allies that critics say will inject chaos into the battleground state after Election Day. “That would mean that there is a window where unreviewable rules can be issued,” McBurney said. It says you may, but not that you must,” McBurney said of the examination rule. At the start of Tuesday’s trial, attorneys for all sides agreed that certification must be completed by 5:00 p.m. on November 12, as state law requires. But Democrats are still arguing that a ruling still needs to guard against county election officials who may refuse to certify the election results under the new rules.
