Elle King opened up about her tumultuous relationship with her father, Rob Schneider, in a recent appearance on Bunnie XO’s “Dumb Blonde” podcast. “I disagree with a lot of the things that he says,” King said of Schneider. “You’re talking out of your ass and you’re talking s--- about drag and, you know, anti-gay rights. A big source of tension between King and Schneider was her appearance, with King’s weight and tattoos being the biggest instigators. My dad sent me to fat camp…and then I got in trouble one year because I sprained my ankle and didn’t lose any weight,” King explained.

Elections Officials Battle a Deluge of Disinformation

Tate Fall is overwhelmed. When she signed on to be director of elections in Cobb County, Ga., last year, she knew she’d be registering voters and recruiting poll workers, maybe fixing up voting machines. She didn’t expect the unending flood of disinformation — or at least, she wasn’t prepared for how much it would overtake her job. She has had election deniers shout at her at public meetings, fielded weekend calls from politicians panicked about a newly circulating falsehood, and even reviewed conspiracy theories circulating on Nextdoor forums that might worsen skepticism among distrustful constituents already doubtful that the democratic system is reliable and secure.

The era of freeloading is officially over

But thanks to the fine-tuning of the tech that Corporate America uses to police subscriptions, those freeloading days are over. Costco and Disney this month took a page from the Netflix playbook and announced they are cracking down on account sharers. Disney’s streaming business — Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ — only became profitable in the second quarter this year. Like Netflix, Costco is betting that you’re already emotionally invested in the routine and the satisfaction of getting a closet’s worth of toilet paper that can last the whole year. Last year, the store reported $4.6 billion in revenue from membership fees, and that accounts for the majority of its profit.

No, it wasn’t a recreational golfer out for an early 18 holes; it was nine-time PGA Tour champion Matt Kuchar, the only golfer in the field at the Wyndham Championship who hadn’t finished the tournament on Sunday. Less than 12 hours earlier, Kuchar baffled onlookers when he marked his ball in the 18th rough and walked off the course. “Sorry that you guys had to come out this morning,” Kuchar said sheepishly. Kuchar said he thought Greyserman still had a chance to win the tournament and believed that his stopping would prompt Greyserman to follow suit. By finishing in a 10-way tie for 12th place, Kuchar was paid $134,695, nearly double what he would have been paid if he had bogeyed the final hole.

After wrapping up her multi-day battleground state tour, Vice President Kamala Harris will attend a major fundraiser in San Francisco on Sunday to court West Coast donors, some of whom had pulled their support for President Joe Biden after his poor debate performance in June. Harris will court Bay Area donors using her deep roots in the area and the political blessing of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has represented San Francisco for nearly four decades in Congress and will join Harris at Sunday’s event, according to a Harris campaign official. In an interview with NBC's Andrea Mitchell on Wednesday, Pelosi said, "It wasn’t just, though, about the House. Disney Details Vast Theme Park Expansion Projects
  + stars: | 2024-08-11 | by ( Brooks Barnes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When Disney announced last year that it planned to spend $60 billion over the next decade to expand its theme park and cruise businesses, double the amount spent over the previous decade, the company’s stock price instantly dropped. Disney fans were excited for a hot second — and then they too started to demand answers, venting on social media about feeling baited. Was Disney being hypothetical about the expansion (as it has been on occasion in the past), or was this for real? The Magic Kingdom, Disney’s flagship theme park in Florida, will undergo the largest expansion in its 53-year history, with one new “land” devoted to classic Disney villains and another focused on Pixar’s “Cars” movies. The Disneyland Resort in California will add two superhero-themed rides, a water-based “Avatar” attraction, the company’s first “Coco” ride and a Main Street, U.S.A., show starring an animatronic Walt Disney.

Why fewer women are running for Congress this year
  + stars: | 2024-08-11 | by ( Simone Pathe | Hien An Ngo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
The number of Republican women running for the House this cycle dropped about 36% from 2022, while the number running for Senate dropped by about 45%, according to data from the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers. “With fewer competitive seats up for grabs, fewer candidates in both parties are running overall, but there is still very strong interest and enthusiasm from Republican women recruits,” Danielle Barrow, executive director of Winning for Women, which works to elect GOP women, said in a statement. That began to change after the 2018 midterms – the huge success enjoyed by Democratic women that year inspired more Republican women to run in 2020. Another possible reason why there may be fewer women running is what Dittmar calls toxicity. Quality over quantityThe decline in the number of candidates running, however, doesn’t necessarily mean there will be fewer women coming to Congress next year.

A former long-haul trucker awaiting trial in the 1992 murder of a North Carolina woman was charged in the suspected serial killings of three more women in California more than four decades ago, authorities said Thursday. The women, all sex workers, were found dead in Port Hueneme, Oxnard and an unincorporated part of Ventura County, respectively, in May, September and December of that year, officials said. Cobb, 29, was found dead on an interstate northwest of Winston-Salem on July 7, 1992, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Court records for Alexander’s case in North Carolina were unavailable Friday night and it isn’t clear if he has entered a plea or who is defending him. Authorities are now working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation through its Highway Serial Killings Initiative to help identify other potential victims linked to Alexander, Nasarenko said.
