DeSantis was absent from the event in his home state, and Trump used the opportunity to attack him. Trump said DeSantis' candidacy was divisive and poked at him over insurers dropping plans in Florida. "We are totally dominating DeSanctus right here in the state of Florida," Trump said, mispronouncing the governor's last name. They're dividing the party, although he's dropping so quickly he's probably not going to be in second place much longer." I said 'I thought you were a DeSantis follower,'" Trump remarked, before declaring that the GOP primary so far has not been competitive.

Images: Reuters/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyBefore the rise of the regulatory state, America’s economic exceptionalism flowed from clear constitutional boundaries between the spheres of individual freedom and government power. All major federal initiatives were circumscribed by the Constitution and required legislation by both houses of Congress followed by the president’s signature. The result was economic and political stability enforced by checks and balances. While political inertia frustrated elected officials, the benefits of unparalleled economic certainty and unmatched freedom to work, save and invest delivered unequaled prosperity.

Tucker Carlson and Mike Pence clashed over US support of Ukraine. "I sincerely wonder how a Christian leader could support the arrest of Christians for having different views," Carlson said. Pence appeared on the back foot during the exchange, allowing Carlson to sway the conversation toward his own narrative on Ukraine. [1/2] Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump attends a campaign event in Council Bluffs, Iowa, U.S., July 7, 2023. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina both argued that it remains vital for the United States to push back against Russian aggression. The United States has provided billions of dollars worth of weapons to Ukraine following Russia's February 2022 invasion. Pence appeared visibly frustrated by Carlson's assertions that the United States lacked a national interest in the Ukraine war. The ultimate goal for the United States, DeSantis added, should be "a sustainable peace in Europe," but he was not specific about how achieve that.

Now, Anheuser-Busch has gotten involved with issues that he's been fighting against, Frericks told Insider. Anheuser-Busch US CEO Brendan Whitworth hasn't explicitly defended the Bud Light partnership with influencer Dylan Mulaney, nor has he called it a mistake. The dip in Bud Light sales persisted through the end of June, USA Today reported. “Addressing the crisis of loneliness and isolation is one of our generation’s greatest challenges,” wrote Surgeon General Vivek Murthy in The Times in April, discussing a national framework for rebuilding social connection to combat what he called an “epidemic” of loneliness. If loneliness is an epidemic, how do you treat it? This calls to mind a trip to the pharmacy to pick up a bottle of pills, but treating loneliness the same way doctors treat high cholesterol isn’t exactly the idea here. Even Dr. Cacioppo, who has dedicated her life to studying human connection, including pharmaceutical solutions for loneliness, questions the value of medicalizing it. “We need to be accountable for the well-being of our friends and teammates and others.”Declaring loneliness an epidemic first requires an understanding of what loneliness is and how it works in the brain.

Unlike other candidates who have employed online gimmicks to secure 40,000 donors, Mr. Pence has invested little in seeking out contributors on the internet. The super PAC supporting Mr. Pence, Committed to America, had raised an additional $2.7 million during the fund-raising reporting period that ended June 30, an aide said. Other Republican presidential candidates have announced far larger fund-raising sums from the three-month reporting period; some of them, unlike Mr. Pence, were in the race for the entire quarter. Mr. Trump said his campaign and his joint fund-raising committee had raised $35 million in the second quarter. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina said his campaign had raised $6.1 million.

Outdoor workers, particularly those in the farming and construction industries, are just one of the groups for which summer is now a survival test. Even desert residents accustomed to scorching summers are feeling the grip of an extreme heat wave smacking the Southwest this week. “When it comes to protecting the health of outdoor workers during extreme heat events, there are really just three fundamental pieces — water, shade and rest,” Dahl told CNN. Consumers spent $12.7 billion across the web on July 11 and 12 during Amazon’s Prime Day sales, a 6.1% jump from a year ago, according to Adobe Analytics. Amazon said July 11 was the single largest sales day in the company’s history, but declined to provide totals. “Prime Day has become of one the biggest e-commerce moments of the year, as consumers latch onto major discounts from a number of different retailers,” said Vivek Pandya, lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights. Amazon holds Prime Day in July every year to juice sales numbers during what are typically slow summer months. Since Prime Day began in 2015, other chains, like Walmart with its Walmart+ week and Best Buy with “Black Friday in July,” have also jumped in to capture shoppers’ spending during slow summer months.

Iowa Republicans pass a new 6-week abortion ban
  + stars: | 2023-07-12 | by ( Adam Edelman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +7 min
Reynolds, in a statement issued moments after the bill was passed, said she would sign the bill on Friday. As it currently stands, abortion remains legal in Iowa until the 20th week of pregnancy. The bill passed by Republicans, who control the Legislature, would ban abortions at the sixth week of pregnancy — or when, in some cases, a fetal pulse can first be heard via ultrasound. Republicans have often struggled to talk to voters about abortion rights in the year since the Supreme Court's Dobbs ruling overturned Roe v. Wade. The latest bill is nearly identical to a six-week ban that remains permanently blocked following an Iowa Supreme Court ruling last month.

For the first time in more than 150 years, the Marine Corps is operating without a Senate-confirmed commandant. The delay marks the first time the Marine Corps will have been without a Senate-confirmed commandant in 164 years. "You know, it's been more than a century since the U.S. Marine Corps has operated without a Senate-confirmed commandant," Austin said. Ramaswamy rethinks political givingAs a biotech entrepreneur, investor and conservative activist, Vivek Ramaswamy cuts a different profile from the veteran politicians who are also seeking the Republican presidential nomination. With the plan that he announced on Monday — in which fund-raisers will get 10 percent of what they drum up for him — Mr. Ramaswamy told DealBook that he’s trying to shake up the business of politics now, too. How it works: Called “Vivek’s Kitchen Cabinet,” the system will give participants a personal link they can share with others, and the campaign will pay them as independent contractors. Mr. Ramaswamy said he’s taking aim at a political norm. After announcing his candidacy in February, he said he had met with professional fund-raisers who promised that they could find wealthy donors in Palm Beach, Fla., in Silicon Valley, and on Wall Street.

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy speaks during the Moms for Liberty Joyful Warriors national summit at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown on July 01, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is adding a novel incentive to his grassroots fundraising operation: paying supporters back a chunk of what they raise for his campaign. Ramaswamy's campaign did not immediately say which agency will conduct those background checks. Soliciting groups of donors for campaign contributions, or bundling, is commonplace in campaign fundraising. But Ramaswamy's program looks poised to expand the practice beyond the usually small circle of wealthy or well-connected operatives who tap their networks for checks.

You have Anthony Fauci and Vivek Murthy saying that 99.2 or 99.5 percent of deaths were unvaccinated, when in those months the share of vaccinated deaths was about 10 times that high. They’re important deaths. But the character of the kind of person who was dying is different.
