"The attention of many leaders has been going to other issues," said Espinosa, who led the U.N. climate change body - called the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, or UNFCCC - from 2016 until July this year. "This is a very important conference in order to really get again the issue of addressing climate change very, very high up on the agenda," she told Reuters. Countries' national climate pledges put the world on track to warm by 2.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, overshooting the 1.5C threshhold beyond which scientists say climate change impacts will significantly worsen. Germany’s top financial watchdog threatened to fine Deutsche Bank AG if it doesn’t implement controls against money laundering by a set deadline, suggesting the regulator isn’t satisfied with the bank’s efforts to police dirty-money flows. Deutsche Bank needs to meet deadlines by mid-2023. Costs, however, remain under strain, partly because of how much the bank is spending to boost internal controls. Deutsche Bank also has monitors in place as part of a 2017 settlement with New York state authorities related to “mirror trades,” in which the bank moved $10 billion of Russian client money out of the country. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Deutsche Bank said it would withdraw from the country.

DENVER — A Colorado woman convicted of plotting to kidnap her son from foster care after associating with supporters of the Qanon conspiracy theory was sentenced Thursday to 60 days in jail and two years of supervised probation, after being reprimanded by the judge for a lack of remorse. In her testimony, Abcug denied she was involved in planning a raid on the foster home where her then 7-year-old son lived in the fall of 2019. A jury convicted her of misdemeanor child abuse because of those allegations as well as conspiracy to commit second-degree kidnapping. She did not describe the group as being involved with QAnon but said she heard references to the conspiracy theory by people she met through her activism online. The conspiracy theory was not a main issue in the trial, which focused more on detailed testimony from medical providers and educators about Abcug son’s medical history.
Barclays PLC, Deutsche Bank AG and Citigroup Inc. lost money on currency-hedging products they sold to a client for an acquisition that fell through, the latest example of the damage spread during the worst stretch for deal making in years. Prosus NV, best known as the largest investor in Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings Ltd., agreed in August 2021 to acquire India’s BillDesk, an online payments platform, for 345 billion rupees, equivalent to about $4.7 billion at the time. To protect the price against swings in the rupee, Prosus bought derivative contracts from the banks that allowed it to lock in the exchange rate ahead of the deal’s closure. Prosus had the flexibility to get rid of the hedge for no fee if the deal didn’t close.

President Fernandez, powerful Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and Economy Minister Sergio Massa, all languish on around 30% positive image, according to an October survey by pollster Ricardo Rouvier & Associates. I don't think this will change the electoral scenario in Argentina at all," political analyst Sergio Berensztein told Reuters. Lula, after his win, wore a cap in support of VP Fernandez de Kirchner. President Fernandez meanwhile said Lula would make his first overseas visit to Argentina once in office, a reversal from cool ties under Bolsonaro between the trade partners. "I think this has more to do with politicians' views than the real effect of the election on actual people," he said.

"It comes and goes," McConney, the trial's very first witness, apologized repeatedly as he sat unmasked in the witness stand and coughed throughout two days of testimony. The jury in the high-profile trial was brought into the courtroom and told by the judge that "someone in the well" had tested positive. The Nord Stream pipeline sabotage in September drew new attention to maritime threats in Europe. European militaries have already been working on new ways to protect undersea infrastructure. Although the pipelines were not in use— Nord Stream 1 was shut down in March by EU sanctions against Russia, and Nord Stream 2 wasn't yet operational—the incident highlights the risks to underwater infrastructure. Even before the war in Ukraine, Western officials had grown worried about increasing activity by Russian ships and submarines around underwater cables crossing the Atlantic. "Russia is clearly taking an interest in NATO and NATO nations' undersea infrastructure," the admiral said at the time.

They had two children, Rachael Stern Martin and David Stern. Or get laid.”Besides Macari and his children, Stern is survived by grandchildren Dylan and Alana Stern and Rebecca and Julia Martin.
But inside the walls at Ware, one of the state’s largest juvenile detention facilities, children have been trying to kill themselves with stunning regularity. In Louisiana, where brutal conditions prompted juvenile justice reform two decades ago, the system is again in crisis. Most Ware guards are Black, as well, though nearly all of its leaders are white, as are the local judge, sheriff and district attorney. “Of course, they still do.” In reports to the state, Ware’s nurses described carpet burns on children’s faces and head-to-toe bruises from restraints. In fact, of the four guards convicted of sexually assaulting children at Ware, Mr. Peace would be the only one imprisoned.
But prisoner advocates say this misstep is indicative of the larger failures of a law that has given federal inmates hope they could qualify for early release. But the new computer app was viewed as a positive development in ensuring inmates' credits don't fall through the cracks. "I hope that what happened with the rollout was a 'glitch,' not a feature of the new autocalculate app. "Nearly four years after the FSA was signed into law, BOP still lacks a formal program statement" on time credits. "There's a lot of tensions inside of prisons because they're wanting to go home and they don't know what's happening."
Mortgage rules at riskIf the agency's legal authority is undermined, it could have a profound affect on home lending markets — an industry that's prone to disruption when laws are murky, especially as interest rates rise. That extended the potential damages to the Wall Street banks as well as mortgage investors Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Appeal likelyIf the Fifth Circuit decision is upheld, it could call into question those long-standing mortgage rules. "The loss of the CFPB mortgage regulations and the effect on the market would catastrophic," said Andreano. "Potential changes in how the CFPB are funded aren't likely to have an immediate effect on the mortgage market."
Shares of Danske Bank soared 12% on news of an expected settlement, ending years of speculation about the size of the fine. Danske Bank , Denmark’s largest bank, said it expects to pay the equivalent of $2.1 billion to settle a money-laundering probe by U.S. and Danish authorities, closing a chapter that has dragged on for years. Danske said Thursday that it took additional provisions in the third quarter to cover that amount, which it is estimating based on discussions with the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Danish special crime unit.
Deutsche Bank net profit rose sharply in the third quarter as it charged higher interest on loans and traded more currencies and bonds for clients in a volatile market. But in a sign of challenges ahead, Germany’s biggest bank set aside more money to cover possible defaults from borrowers amid a looming recession in its home market and farther afield.
Another Champions League defeat, this time a 4-3 loss away to Benfica, ensured Juventus’ exit from the competition at the group stage for the first time in nine years. Juventus faces the prospect of missing out on next season's Champions League. There is no denying the current side is considerably weaker than the Juve teams of recent years, but eighth in Serie A and Champions League misery are still well below this season’s expectations. Samuel Iling-Junior was a bright spark in Juventus' defeat. Juventus’ season is by no means over, but three huge games in the next week against Lecce, PSG and Inter Milan could go a long way to defining its outcome.
REUTERS/Clodagh KilcoyneWASHINGTON, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The U.S. Congressional Progressive Caucus withdrew a letter to the White House urging a negotiated settlement to the war in Ukraine, the group's chairperson, Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal, said on Tuesday. “The Congressional Progressive Caucus hereby withdraws its recent letter to the White House regarding Ukraine," Jayapal said in a statement. The letter drew immediate pushback, including from some members of the Progressive Caucus. In her statement withdrawing the letter, Jayapal said that, because of the timing, the letter was being conflated as being equivalent to McCarthy's remark. As such, it is a distraction at this time and we withdraw the letter," Jayapal's statement said.
