Credit and debit card fees were always a big business expense for Patti Riordan, who owns a hobby shop in Lancaster, Ohio. Now, so-called swipe fees are her third biggest expense, behind payroll and rent, amounting to roughly $18,000 a year. “There is no room to pay more — we’re just operating so thin,” Ms. Riordan said. Debit and credit card fees are among the top monthly expenses for many small businesses, which say the costs are becoming more onerous as fewer consumers carry cash. When they swipe a credit card, businesses pay fees to the bank that issues the card, to the payment network and, often, to companies like Toast and Square that help process the transaction.

President-elect Donald J. Trump said on Saturday that he wants to replace Christopher A. Wray, the F.B.I. director, with Kash Patel, a hard-line critic of the bureau who has called for shutting down the agency’s Washington headquarters, firing its leadership and bringing the nation’s law enforcement agencies “to heel.”Mr. Trump’s planned nomination of Mr. Patel has echoes of his failed attempt to place another partisan firebrand, Matt Gaetz, atop the Justice Department as attorney general. It could run into hurdles in the Senate, which will be called on to confirm him, and is sure to send shock waves through the F.B.I., which Mr. Trump and his allies have come to view as part of a “deep state” conspiracy against him. Mr. Patel has been closely aligned with Mr. Trump’s belief that much of the nation’s law enforcement and national security establishment needs to be purged of bias and held accountable for what they see as unjustified investigations and prosecutions of Mr. Trump and his allies. Mr. Patel “played a pivotal role in uncovering the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, standing as an advocate for truth, accountability and the Constitution,” Mr. Trump said in announcing his choice in a social media post.

A fighter inspects a seized Syrian Army rocket launcher in the district of Khan al-Assal which was taken over by Jihadists and their Turkish-backed allies in the northern Syrian Aleppo province, on November 29, 2024. Syrian authorities closed Aleppo airport as well as all roads leading into the city on Saturday, three military sources told Reuters, as rebels opposed to President Bashar al-Assad said they had reached the heart of Aleppo. The Syrian army has been told to follow "safe withdrawal" orders from the main areas of the city that the rebels have entered, three army sources said. The opposition fighters have said the campaign was in response to stepped-up strikes in recent weeks against civilians by the Russian and Syrian air force on areas in rebel-held Idlib, and to preempt any attacks by the Syrian army. Opposition sources in touch with Turkish intelligence said Turkey, which supports the rebels, had given a green light to the offensive.

More than two feet of snow blanketed parts of western New York and Pennsylvania on Saturday, as a lake-effect snowstorm disrupted post-Thanksgiving travel and threatened to bring up to five feet of snow to some areas by Tuesday morning. The snowfall was heaviest along Interstate 90, the National Weather Service said, which hugs Lake Erie from Buffalo through Pennsylvania and on to Cleveland. In some areas, white-out conditions could be life-threatening, the service said. Jerry Byrne, director of the county roads commission, said that while traveling just a mile during the storm, drivers could go from clear pavement to white-out conditions. Interstates in Pennsylvania across the New York State line were impassable, the New York State Thruway Authority said on Saturday morning, and some areas remained closed to commercial trucks.

While many people may experience some anxiousness around their finances, money dysmorphia is a different ballgame. 1 sign you may be struggling with it is if you constantly worry about your finances, no matter how much money you've actually got in your bank account, says Aja Evans, a financial therapist and author of "Feel Good Finance." "Money dysmorphia is about feeling like your financial state is different than the actual reality of it," she tells CNBC Make It. It starts to become a problem when your distorted perception of your finances disrupts your day-to-day life, Evans says.
