The wife of a California inmate will receive $5.6 million after being sexually violated during a strip search when she tried to visit her husband in prison, her attorneys said Monday. Of the $5.6 million settlement, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will pay $3.6 million and the rest will be paid by the other defendants, which include two correctional officers, a doctor, and the Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley hospital. Despite no contraband being found in any of her belongings or her body, Cardenas was denied her visit with her husband. California prisons have faced an ongoing problem of sexual abuse and misconduct, with the the U.S. Justice Department announcing it had opened an investigation into allegations that correctional officers systematically sexually abused incarcerated women at two state-run California prisons. Earlier this year the federal Bureau of Prisons announced it will close a women’s prison in Northern California known as the “rape club” after an Associated Press investigation exposed rampant sexual abuse by correctional officers.

CNN —Shohei Ohtani stole his 47th base of the season on Monday night to take him one step closer to a historic 50-50 season as the Los Angeles Dodgers lost 10-4 to the Chicago Cubs. Despite moving closer to making history, Ohtani was not the only storyline on Monday night. In fact, it was the performances of two former Dodgers, Cody Bellinger and Michael Busch, which decided the game. Concerns about the use of cryptocurrencies for illegal activity resulted in an effective ban on crypto mining and transactions. After a massive public outcry at the end of 2021, mining companies in Kazakhstan were effectively cut off from the grid. Today, the US makes up about 40% of the global hashrate — up from 17% during China's 2021 peak — making America the biggest hub for bitcoin mining. However, in recent years, bitcoin mining has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of private companies. Given how much energy bitcoin mining consumes, it's worth questioning whether its presence in the US is really worth the trade-off.

CNN —The Chinese Football Association has banned for life 38 soccer players and five club officials after a two-year investigation into match-fixing and gambling, as part of a crackdown on corruption in one of China’s most popular sports. CFA President Song Kai said 43 of the 44 had been banned for life from football-related activities, and 17 others received five-year bans. A former chairman of the CFA was sentenced to life in prison in March.
